I was having a conversation with someone in pm's, and I thought it warranted its own thread. Is there an unofficial number out there somewhere for Lambert's career sacks? The NFL didn't start officially recording sack totals until 1982. There are unofficial totals for some players from that era. Is there one for Lambert?

I googled it and got an answer of 23.5 sacks uncredited and that he had 8 actually credited because of his last 2 years.

Being very young and the fact that overall performance seemed to matter more than stats back in the day, I have no idea how many sacks Lambert actually had. However, I do remember that when a QB decided to tuck it and run across the LOS Jack really excelled at making sure he didn't get very far and usually punished the player brutally for doing so. Man, I really miss those big hits.

In them days especially with the 4 down lineman and 3 linebackers, the linebackers were not used much in blitzing and most of the sacks came from the down lineman that used many different types of stunts to pass rush. Not sure on stats for the linebackers but they were not high in comparison to today's pass types of offense. 20 some passes a game was the norm then versus 30 to 40 in today's game. I would think Lamberts sacks are not very high but overall play was truly outstanding.

Interesting, Wikipedia has Jack "officially" having 23.5 sacks and TTF states There are "unofficial" totals for some players from that era. Seems misleading but falls back to where we started, Jack officially made sacks but officially not recorded. :lolol:

Thanks BFT. I've seen that number, but was just wondering if the team kept a record like other teams did.

    Quite true on all counts.

Only 23.5? For a 2nd round draft pick? Obviously a bust. Who the hell keeps drafting these guys?

Im sure if TTF had been innovative enough to provide this board back then, there would have been very concerned members with Lambert's slow development!

What was so amazing with Lambert, he was great from the first game he played. For some reason in today's world linebackers need years....:lolol:

I'm sure that many on this board are hoping that changes now that LeBeau has moved on.

Agree. Thing is his last job was to sack the QB. I hate the term Tampa-2 as it credits a new dynamic defensive scheme to Tampa and their Coaches when in fact it's just a rendition of the Steelcurtain. Lambert was drafted because he fit what the Steelers coaches wanted to fit their new scheme. They wanted a smart athletic MLB who could drop into coverage.

In a different thread it was asked would he be a HOFer in today's NFL. Absolutely!!!!!! He fits today's game better than yesteryear. His football smarts was key and with today's technology and advanced film room he would have thrived.
