Why is it that expressing a legitimate concern about a player's performance on the field is deemed "complaining" by some? I think there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about JJ's performance and injury history at this point. When he has played, he's played like he tested pre-draft, weak and slow. I'm concerned. I'm sorry if that's offensive to some. But just because I'm concerned doesn't mean I'm not hopeful that he can develop into an adequate, pass rushing linebacker.

And by the way, just to prove that I can...
    MARTAVIS IS A BEAST!!!!! :yeehaw:

It's not the concern as much as the frequency of stating the same concerns.

It is not complaining and there is some things to be concerned about, however Jack, you and JAD are arguing facts not in evidence. Many of these are misconceptions or preconceived ideas. Jarvis is working out and while he may not be slamming on 25 pounds of lean blitz the QB and rip his head off muscle Russell, like Martavis did, he is doing weight training. The getting pushed around hyperbole could be cause for concern but as a first year player going against seasoned vets that have size and weight on him that can be understandable. That's not even adding in that he was a rookie playing in a complex system that probowl caliber players have repeatedly said takes three years to really know what you are supposed to be doing and then can play on instinct. We have been spoiled by James Harrison, JJ isn't Harrison and he is never going to be that strong guy who can bullrush 300 pound tackles off the edge. Biggest mistake he can make is to let those guys get a hand on him. I don't care if he never bullrushes, it didn't help Ziggy hood any and he had the size for it. What I'd do if I was Butler is force the LT to choose. Have Jarvis blitz on a quick outside loop and have Shazier or Spence or even Harrison come half a second later into the gap. So they have to decide let Jones loop around for a shot at the QB or give Silverback a clean shot at him.

Out of curiosity, for those that seem to not be as concerned about JJ as Jack, IF he plays all year and doesn't exactly light things up will you then be concerned? Or maybe another way to ask it is what will it take for you to share Jack's concerns?

A larger sample size with outside factors taken into account as well as the stats.

    pretty good summary thorn.

I think we all have concerns jack, but I have just as many from some others on defense too. they had Jarvis playing better against the run early last year. he doesn't always loop outside, in fact he was getting caught inside too much for my liking and they were running outside of him. that was mostly in his rookie year though. he had done a better job of that in year two. so that's fixing one problem he had.

they were probably going to start then to work on pass rush moves and I remember hearing JH was working with him on the double moves early in camp last year. well then he got injured.

a wrist injury is really not a reoccurring type of injury, but it does put a damper on strength training of the upper body and practicing. so one problem at a time and if he fixes those as he's seemed to against the run then he is on the right course. if not we have other guys that can and will step in if needed. remember JH will be sharing snaps with him so we should be OK at that spot this year.

What is your barometer you are personally using to call this next season a success for him?

Fair enough, thorn. While concerned, I'm certainly willing to give JJ a complete season before coming to a final conclusion. Here's to hoping JJ can stay healthy AND deliver when given the opportunity this year. :dfense:

Didn't happen. Would have been nice for that to happen, but JH wasn't in camp last year.

Legit concerns are fine. He does get pushed past the pocket too often. In my opinion, it's because his bull rush isn't good enough, and the OTs know it. So they just lie in wait for him to go outside, and push him. They don't have to hunker down because there's no real threat he'll overpower them. Hopefully that changes some this year, but ultimately I think he'll be a guy that gets to the QB with savvy and instincts, like the sack/fumble he hurt his wrist on.

But some people are just hating, or complaining for the sake of it. "Jarvis is too weak and needs to get stronger" is one thing, but "Jarvis doesn't work out" is another, and it's just plain stupid. It's not based on fact, or even opinion, but instead some sick self-loathing fantasy.

I won't lie, I'm a bit concerned. He's had a lot working against him. If he can stay injury free this season I believe we'll see why he was a first round draft pick.

Okay, can we at least agree that JJ should be given a full year to properly evaluate his success properly.? I think we could all live with that. Can we then agree to continue discussions on this at the end of a full SEASON.? Would like nothing better then JJ doing great because that would be good for the team defense, however there is a mighty big concern here and nothing wrong with voicing that. Isn't that what this discussion forum is all about.?

That's all there was about it, but it sounds like Ed took a card the PR guy handed him and tweeted it.

That one doesn't really have legs. Work with this tidbit from yesterday. He must have a supplement problem. It's so bad he got sick from it yesterday and it stopped him from practicing. His recent weight gain made headlines...

About Bryant, his rookie year is over and he had a good one, but defenses will pay closer attention to him as a threat this year and I still expect him to have a great season and make the pro bowl, thats right, he will be that good: Some mention about Harrison, if he had the size of bud dupree he would have terrorized quarterbacks all the way to the hall of fame, he over achieved his whole career despite his lack of size, and that's impressive....
