Yeah but I was just thinking he deserved it based on all he has done for this board. You know, a "contributor".

My top 3 in order would be Mike Webster, Terry Bradshaw, John Stallworth

Until now I didn't realize that it was totally strategic to retire Joe's number tonight.

If you retired all the jerseys of all the greats, there'd be no more jerseys left to wear!!!!!!!

So here is what I'd propose, though I doubt the NFL uniform rules committee would allow it: Certain numbers will be gold (or outlined in gold) on the uniform. If a player wears 12, 32, 57, 58, 26, 36, 56, 88, 82, etc. it will look different.

To become the next player to have his number retired, a guy can't just be the best Steeler of all time at his position. He would have to be the best player league wide at his position. That makes Webbie the obvious choice to me.

If your going to retire a number it has to be Franco's 32, then a close second by Jack Lambert 58.

Ha, I just made this same suggestion in another thread before I saw this.

I'm all for it! Let's get a campaign going.

There would be too many choices from the 70's teams. How could you pick 58 without considering 59? How could you retire 88 without considering 82? So many great players and great tandems on those teams. Personally, I wouldn't retire Franco..... his late career dancing moves drove me crazy..... but there again, how could you retire 32 without considering 20? What a great story Rocky was too. Bottom line, there are too many great players on those teams to retire all the great ones.

I'm a liitle curious as to why Lambert didn't show for Greene's jersey retirement? I know he is not a public type guy, but I would have thought this event was worth an exception.

If there were more retired, 'd say they would have to be Lambert and Franco.

The weird thing about retiring jerseys is that we have, essentially, retired a lot of these guys already. Nobody gets 12. Nobody gets 32.

Part of me wishes they'd just make it official. Part of me likes the way that they make jersey retirement so special that there are only two players, out of all the greats we've ever seen play in the black and gold.

There's been a lot of chatter about Bradshaw not being there. I didn't hear any about Lambert. That said, none of us can really know their reasons. I'm sure Lambert has a good one for not appearing; he has become such a recluse in recent years that I actually fear that he's in poor health and trying to keep it quiet. It wouldn't surprise me, though, if Lambert had called Mean Joe at some point and the two talked for hours.
