Man I can tell you that with pastoring I have to REALLY get over these losses quickly. I am an extreeemely competitive person by nature and I think most big sports fans are. I think that is why we get so mad when our team loses because we feel like WE have lost. Also I think that when you emotionally invest in a team you invest in the team that you view as sort of an extension of who you are. I'm a really loyal guy and I believe deeply in hard work and always striving to be better. Those are qualities I've always felt the Steelers have held and when I see such mediocre effort it really ticks me off because I always think that I MYSELF would never want to be so lackluster and they shouldn't either. I think maybe that's why we all feel so let down by them sometimes. But I have to get over it quickly when they lay such eggs because when your phone rings and there's a sad mom or someone calling with a problem or to tell me about a death or something like that it sorta puts things in perspective. But if I said "I can't deal with that right now! The Steelers just lost!" I wouldn't be much help to anyone. So instead I've learned, when it comes to the Steelers, to just say like Scarlett O'Hara "I can't think about that right now. I'll think about that tomorrow." LOL! Whatever works right?

I too am in education and have been for 24 years. I've been a Steeler fan for 40. The two have always coincided because, well, the academic year and football season always start together. :smiley1:

That said, I get the gist of the post. My wife won't let me watch Steeler games in the house. I have to go the the bar...because I scare the kids. When I die, I want my ashes spread at the confluence. (And I never lived in Pittsburgh!) Every season has its own personality and creates its own set of memories, memories that are connected to the rest of my life.

1978...my parents nasty divorce, my dad taking me to SB XIII as a sort of "I'm sorry, son" gift. (Superman in the theaters; The Who sings "Who Are You")
1980...I had puberty and the Steelers styarted to suck. I thought there was a correlation. ("Whip It...Into Shape..."
1989...Graduating college, rise of the Steelers ("Mixed Emotions by the Rolling Stones)
1992...met my first wife, Cowher's first season ("Drive" R.E.M.)
1995...marital trouble, Steelers get back to the SB (Oasis: "Wonderwall")
1997...divorced, Kordell has an incredible season (radiohead: "Karma Police")
2004...went back to school to get my doctorate, Ben arrives. ("Vertigo"...U2)

    You get the picture.

This team means something to me. And on Mondays (or Tuesdays) I'm left thinking about the game the day/night before.

But it usually doesn't last much after that. Things to do. And then come February or March, I can reflect on the season, good or bad, and pull out of it what was meaningful.

I wouldn't be surprised if both are real things and both sound absolutely hilarious! LOL! I saw a dude at Disneyworld the other day that was shorter than me and my wife said "I wish I could get a picture of you standing next to him." LOL!

I seriously love standing next to dudes that are shorter than me. I'm 5'4 and a half and the guy was WAY shorter than me. Probably by like 2in. His wife was literally like 4in taller than him. LOL!

Also if you like Randy Newman you HAVE to listen to "Rednecks". It is one of the greatest songs of all time.
