    Aw shucks.

I thought we wanted to be the most feared, not likeable?

The Steelers haven't been feared since 2008 when most of the guys on defense were in their prime, and the defense was ranked #1.

You wouldn't know it around here. Most people around here who are not Steelers fans (not just the BenGal fans around here) act like they absolutely can't stand the Steelers.

I just always figured success breeds jealousy in other fan bases. That's why a lot of people say they hate the Steelers, the Patsies, etc. (Ok, I can't really stand the Pats, either :innocent: )

I read that article, and it was a pure fluff piece. The author has no solid reasoning for his rankings. He sounds very bitter too with ranking New England last. The same detractors he used for Philadelphia (Vick. Cooper) could be said for Pittsburgh with Ben and the alegations made against him. If you really were being objective, probably the most likeable franchise is Green Bay.

What about when our defense was #1 in 2010 (points), #1 in 2012 (yards), or #1 in 2011 (points and yards)? Warren Sapp had plenty to say about those defenses, but I'd go as far to say he was wrong. Hell, his nonsense was probably fear-based anyway.

You could say none of those defenses were as good as the one in 2008 (and you'd be right), but that was one of the very greatest defenses in NFL history. Pretty high bar.

I remember reading way back then Art (The Chief) said he was asked if the Steelers could be referred to Americas Team and the Chief said, no, we are Pittsburgh's Team. So they took their 2nd choice. Cowgirls

Very true. We were a force in 2008, then something happened in 2009 and we haven't been the same since. We don't have the same attitude we used to have, nor do we have guys that can punish the offence (we do, but it doesn't seem to happen much).

The 2008 Steelers had one of the best defenses in NFL history. They are overlooked, but they were the best I've ever seen (I was not around in the '70s, but the game is so different now anyway that I wouldn't make that comparison). How are we supposed to live up to that even once, let alone every year? We've been the top defense since then, a couple of times. What defense has? Seattle's defense last year has everyone buzzing, and they got a new nickname, but their stats aren't as good as ours in '08, and they didn't have the most difficult schedule the league had seen in 25 years, like we did.

Unless, of course, you're not talking about how good a defense is, but only how much attitude we have... But I don't know how you measure that, and it certainly matters less than actual ability.

Yeah I was just coming to say the same thing. People around here (NW PA) either love the Steelers or despise them. There is NO in between. My favorite is the comments about the "obnoxious" fans as though no other team has them
