I'll never understand what happened, they backed him when the **** hit the fan and then they cut him later. Did Fangupo really outplay him that much? Because I don't know if he played a single snap and meanwhile Ta'amu is starting. I don't question the Steelers much but I think they blew that one.

Why are you putting this on KC? Tomlin has final say on picks.

I like the new guy's dry sense of humor.

The coach makes the picks? Does Colbert have final say on when to punt?

I'm not worried. I am one of the few that seemed to like Ziggy. I'm not saying he was the second coming of A. Smith but I thought he was serviceable. I, like others, think he was in the wrong system. Anyhow, I think we will be ok without Ziggy.

Ziggy wasn't a bust nor a superstar. He was an average 3-4 DE. The reason losing him hurts so much is we have nothing behind him. Arnfelt? Please. There's a reason he was undrafted and spent almost hte entire season on the practice squad. Williams? After he was drafted the FO said he was a couple year project, but he didn't even make it through preseason before ending up on IR. It should be obvious that losing him for the season is a major setback in his development, but that is being ignored by some in Steeler Nation.

What? I thought Williams and Arnfelt were going to be starters in 2014? Lol!
Those two may prove to be valuable at some point, but right now they are both long shots!
Your assessment of Hood seems fair. Those saying he is a bust are just plain wrong. Guy has been a starter for the last three years. He may not have lived up to his first round draft position, but certainly not a bust as some label him.

Out of all the players that have departed. Hood definitely had the most upside IMO. Too bad good players switch teams at their first opportunity and don't have a chance to gel and become better within the system.

Ziggy Hood, the Steelers' first-round draft pick in 2009, became the second free agent defensive end to leave them in two days when he signed Thursday with the Jacksonville Jaguars, reportedly for $16 million over four years. Al Woods signed with the Tennessee Titans, and Brett Keisel remains an unrestricted free agent. Those were three of their top four defensive ends last season. Only Cameron Heyward remains on the roster of those with any appreciable NFL playing time. Hood never quite lived up to his billing as a first-round pick from Missouri, but he was a workhorse. Playing behind Aaron Smith early in his career, he did not nail down a starting job at left defensive end until 2012, after Smith's retirement. He then lost that job last season to Heyward, a first-round draft pick in 2011. Hood, 27, played in all 80 games since he joined the Steelers, starting 46. He had 11.5 sacks, including three last season. He had no forced fumbles in his career. While Heyward took Hood's spot at left end last season, he has mostly played on the right side, backing up Keisel. With Carrington more suited to the left, the combination of those two could work well. Keisel, a longtime stalwart in the Steelers' 3-4 defense, is still seen as an outside possibility to rejoin the team. However, if they sign Carrington, those chances could well disappear. Keisel has said he wants to play in 2014, but his agent, Eric Metz, said he would retire before taking a job that pays minimum wage. Keisel, 35, has played all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Steelers since they drafted him in the seventh round from BYU in 2002. He has been their starting right defensive end the past eight seasons. He missed four games last year with a foot injury. With Hood and tight end David Johnson (San Diego) leaving, the entire 2009 draft class has vanished from the roster, following that of 2008, which was gone by last year. Guard Ramon Foster, who signed after he went undrafted, is the only one left from their rookie class of 2009. Ed Bouchette: ebouchette@post-gazette.com and Twitter @EdBouchette.

I doubt that Tomlin has final say on picks, Colbert is the GM and has been with the Steelers almost twice as long as Tomlin. I'm sure Tomlin has some input but Colbert is calling the shots.

I have seen several people saying the steelers messed up in letting him go. I am not going to quote or say how I know but I have heard that after he came back into the locker room he felt a little entitlement cause the rooneys went to bat for him. he thought he could act a certain way and not really the steeler way. in other words not a great teammate. like I said not saying how I know cause I in no way have a pipeline to the steelers locker room or anything. I just overheard some stuff

    No.

I bet it has to be something like that. Shame, another wasted pick.

Colbert didn't step in a sideline to cost us a pick.
Colbert isn't the coach who led the team to a 0-4 record for the first time in over 40 years.
Colbert isn't the one who gave up a team record 55 points.
Colbert's clock management didn't cost us several games over the past several years.
Colbert doesn't prepare the team, which routinely looks lost against the worst teams in the NFL.

I mention these on-the-field screw-ups because they point to Tomlin's questionable competence. Period. Thus, there's no reason to believe his drafting ability is any better.

Are we supposed to believe that somehow Colbert no longer knows how to build a team??? That the sudden downturn in drafts, after Cowher, is not due to the change in HC???

Tomlin's the entity that got injected into the organization. The Rooneys were there. Colbert was there. In comes Tomlin and things slowly fall apart. It's pretty clear to me what the problem is.

I don't dislike Tomlin on a personal level. I just think he's a terrible HC. The team's finish last year is encouraging, however.

That was the latest, though the NFL has not moved on the issue...seemingly waiting till the last minute to inform the Steelers of what late rd pick they will lose. Jerry Micco believes the NFL will back off on that. But as of now, that's still the word.

The thing about drafting Ziggy is he was the wrong type of D lineman for the system the run. Ziggy hasn’t really been bad, he just didn't fit the system. Makes you wonder what was going on in drafting him. For example, Hood was a pass rusher, did Tomlin and Colbert foresee possibly some changes to the defense, maybe some institution of 4-3 principles later down the line? And with LeBeau and Steeler brass that fell off as a possibility.

I like both guys. They've both made mistakes but do a good job overall, in my opinion. Most of your complaints are really vague. We gave up 55 points. We lost 8 games. How do you know what to pin on who? Cowher went 7-9 before, even 6-10. Between Super Bowls. Was he a bad coach those years?

And come draft day, it is Colbert who makes the call. Obviously Tomlin is almost right up there with him, but nothing happens without Colbert's okay. We had some bad draft picks, and some bad breaks with draft picks, and even a couple great picks that outplayed our price range. We also had some great picks that are actually sticking around, it seems! Overall it seems you're reaching with your criticisms of Tomlin.
