I just got a new laptop a few weeks ago and I seriously know nothing about computers and software and stuff like that. So it has Norton Anti Virus but it has this thing that pops up and says that I only have a few days left to renew that. But my buddy told me that since I have comcast internet that they have their own anti virus that protects all their subscribers. So my question is is that true or should I renew that Norton thing that keeps popping up? If the Norton thing runs out does that mean I'm going to get a virus? I would REALLY appreciate the help from all you pocket protector wearing dudes! LOL!

I know nothing about Comcast. My own ISP offers anti-virus protection, but I still use my own.

If money is an issue, and you still want added protection, you can always use AVG. Good software and free.

But you might want to call your provider and see their recommendation as well.

If you choose a different anti-virus, be sure to uninstall Norton.

AVG and Avast are both solid free antivirus software.

You might as well have asked him to pilot the space shuttle.

I would definitely go with an anti-virus software like Norton or Mcafee installed directly to your computer. Not sure how Comcast's works, but it may only be good when using Comcast as your internet source. So if you're using a hotspot somewhere you may have no protection?
You can find Norton cheaper than going directly through their website. Try Groupon or search the web for a discount code. Sometimes you can get it much cheaper through Amazon by buying the multi computer package for use on two computers and just split it with someone. If you call Norton directly you can negotiate a better price also, I just did that a couple months ago and was able to get it for about half of their advertised price.

Another vote here for AVG. Been using it for years and haven't had a problem.

If you feel the need to pay for an antivirus software Nod32 by Eset is very good and cheap at $59 for two years.

Good point. I remember many years ago when we had Verizon, they offered a security suite for free, and it was a software bundle to download, but it's something to make sure about.

We've always used Norton Internet Security. We get it on Amazon. My wife has an app that tracks prices and gives price drop alerts, and we usually get it for $15 or so. We've never had a problem with it, and I think historically we've probably done more online banking/shopping/downloading/web navigating than a lot of folks. Here's what we use.

They make different options with different license types depending on how many computers you need to run it on.

AVG makes a free antivirus and a more comprehensive paid solution. I haven't tried either of them personally.

I know plenty of people have the mindset of 'only suckers pay for antivirus', and that might be true. I know tons of people who have no problems with free antivirus software. For me it's just if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    BFT- Do you have Xfinity?
