SEEING THAT WE HAVE TROUBLE EVALUATING CB AND OL, WHAT CB'S COULD WE LOOK AT IN FA?

I for one do not have much confidence
    in our scouting dept/talent evaluaters
for these positions. What fa that we could afford
might be available for us to look at?
Would it be to our advantage to go this route
in lieu of a draft pick? Thanks

I'm not sure who to get, but I agree with FA as the best route for these 2 positions... the trick is to free up enough money to get a guy...

I would rather draft. me have missed yes but that is better than missing on a high priced other team reject. I know some free agents pan out but its just as big of a gamble as draft. it can also be more expensive. I think the coaches learned a lot this year. main thing is that rookies can come in and play

CB seems to be the worst FA acquisition. A decent one gets way over priced. A mediocre one is overpriced and we can find that in the draft.

I look for both possibly ward.

I look at it like this. other teams have starters and a 3rd or 4th guy that has promise. he doesn't see the field much because of vets in front of him. they have money woes too. similar to us. that's the guy we go after.

we don't have to wait for a rookie to get on the field because this guy has had 2-3-4 years in the nfl already. just not tons of starting experience, but has played. that's the FA we go after.

gay and ike to an extent have our butts covered. a rookie could also be brought in and hey if he's good enough, he may play.

shamarko gives us an added luxury, because of his year of safety and corner use last year. I expect we get a corner and safety as draft picks and at least a mid tier FA CB.

They need one of those Farrior or Clark type signings. A guy kinda under the radar that you don't have to break the bank for but hasn't hit his full potential yet.

Art said today the steelers are going to stay the course when it comes to FA. He did say they would be opportunistic though

Which means what? That there will be more losses than gains? Half of our gains will be players on their second turn as a Steeler?

Build through the draft and sign low level FA's. When it stops working then I'll question it. And no, I'm not worried about a couple 8-8 seasons. They'll be back in the playoffs next year.

Look for an unproven yet solid upside FA... Was hoping Ekpre from the ducks would declare but he chose to suit up for another year. I like his play and he wouldn't have Been too hard to nab I don't think

The only free agent CB they will sign is a guy who was a backup and they can get for cheap, they can't afford those high priced CB's. I would rather find some in the draft and develop them, it worked with Cortez Allen not so much with Curtis Brown.

I think you may be right Mac and I
do expect them to really look at the back
end of our defense this off season.
I still believe that our scouting dept
or whoever evaluates other teams players
should be upgraded. I am like you feel
that there are players on other teams just
at the cusp, but for reasons unknown
(starter maybe better) don't get the chance
    to shine.

That's what I want to see is some names. I know everyone want's the "Ryan Clarks and James Farrior" type free agents, but who are they? Does anyone know?

Did anyone know who Ryan Clark was or James Farrior before they came to Pittsburgh? I didn't.

I knew who Farrior was, I was excited when we picked him up from the Jets.
