Yep. Nelson was wide open. If it were Rodgers in that situation we lose 99 times out of a 100.

I think we had the offense clicking and we sent a message. to our own team too. go with it and win this thing while we are hot. it worked. can't blame the D either , the ST's gave up that return but our kicker let down the coverage unit with that low line drive kick. suisham out kicked the coverage. that ball got to the return man way to quickly. I knew we were in trouble immediately.

anyway, that's how I saw that series of events unfolding. this whole team gets to excited at times, and gets out of sorts. coaches and qb. that empting the backfield down inside the 15 drives me nuts. you take away half of what the defense has to defend. it worked out this time.

This is what I am trying to get across,
it's not just this game. It has been like
this since Tomlin got here. They need
help in these situations. The people I mentioned in the original thread have no clue what they are
    doing.

I know Im in the minority here and I really dont know why.We scored on second down with 1:25 left.Lets say we took a knee at 1:30.....Third down....run 39 secs off game clock take a knee about 48 sec left.....Run 39 secs off game clock call TO with 11 sec left on GC. Kick FG. I know could have it blocked, missed, fumbled snap but it was not much more than a PAT. And what is our kickers % on PATs this year 36/36 At this time.Lets say 3 sec for FC....8 Sec left on GC. With the run back they ended up with game would have been over. No GB OF plays after kick return. Just piss poor game mgt from MT.I dont buy the lets get 7 instead of 3. When we give them 1:25 to tie or beat us. Give me a 3 pt lead with 8 sec left over a 7 pt lead with 1:25 I take the 3 EVERY time!.

As porous as our defense has been this season, we need as many points as we can get. TD > FG. We should have gone for two after we scored because our defense is so bad! :smiley1:

Then they score on the KO return, and we lose?

You can disagree with the playcall, but you can't call it "piss poor" management. There are loads of arguments not to go for the FG. Above all else, you go for the 7 and, unless they score and go for a 2 pt conversion (almost completely unlikely), then there is no way you can lose, only tie; go for 3, and you can still be beaten.

As I said before, Tomlin should be criticised for his clock management elsewhere, but on this call there was a clear logic. There is also a logic to going for 3, and I know some (maybe a Cowher figure, for example) may have taken it. But at best the reasons are 50-50 each way. In my opinion, more 80-20 towards getting the 7.

Myron I'm right there with you.....Merry Christmas by the way. I can't help but think of a line from the movie 'Moneyball' something like 'an imperfect understanding of how teams win games.' In fact, wasn't it Tomlin who once said.....yes we need to get better at running the football....inasmuch as it helps us with the overall strategy of winning games (or something...I know that's not perfect). Nice sentiment, but in end game strategy, the object isn't necessarily to score the most points possible (GASP! WHAT?!?!). It's to give yourself the greatest statistical of having more points than your opponent when the clock hits 0:00. It sounds good in theory to say td is always better, but to JackAttack's point, in this case with a porous defense your best percentage of winning was never letting their offense take the field. There was 1:28 left in the game on 2nd down snap. 3 seconds per play and 40 second rundowns leave you 2 seconds when you snap the ball for the winning field goal which the stats would say you have a 98% chance of making at that distance. I would also say the chance of fumbling on 2 kneel downs is zero unless your last name is Pisarcik. I defy anyone to say scoring a touchdown with 1:25 left especially with our defense and special teams gave us a greater than 98% chance of winning.

So, while it's typically hard to argue that you should set up for something that gives you LESS points, Tomlin's post game assertion that he never even considered running the clock down because td = more points and points = good demonstrates an imperfect understanding of how ball games are won. Go back and look at the way Denver beat Dallas earlier in the year. Neither team could stop the other so when they had a chance to score the TD at the end, they opted to run the clock down and kick the field goal with no time left. Normally I would say the same as most other people. Take the td and the points when you can get them....but NOT when the other team is powerless to stop the clock and you are in 98% field goal range with a tie score. Scoring a TD is awesome....scoring a FG with no time to win the game when the opposing defense is powerless to do anything about it....priceless. I like priceless.

We used to be good @ using the clock_no longer.

With Cowher, Pittsburgh was the master @ TOP, H3ll it became comical how many times the opposing QB actually got to touch the ball.

After that we weren't bad @ clock management too if memory serves me right, H3ll we won a SB doing it exactly right.

SO what has changed? Well the chin is long gone and for the SB, hey, wait a minute!

BA! The get rid of BA comes back to haunt us again.

Despite the fact that they were Shamarko's fingertips away from doing just that?

    Sigh.

Read the thread Myron, people have been giving reasons throughout. Hence why no need to go through them all again. And I'm well aware "you did", what I was saying was it was a ridiculously hyperbolic thing to say in this particular situation.
