text book block. and no it's not against the rules since he was going for the tackle. that puts him in full play. you are not allowed to block below the waist on a return, which he didn't, the head remained up, the shoulder hit with the hands and arms in front. in slow motion it may look like a launch, but a player has to absorb the blow he's about to take on a block. how else could he possibly have blocked the guy that would surely make and was going after the ball carrier, just like any other defensive player on the field. no way in heck that should be a fine. kickers and punters should have more equipment on then they wear. they are out there in those things you buy at wally world for a 5 YO.

If someone blew up Suisham like that, we would be calling for suspensions...

True but SUISHAM ain't going to be trying to make a tackle. #10 was moving toward Brown and had a good line on him. Gonna play with the big boys ya better keep your head on a swivel and your teeth could use a mouth guard

Edit: Making a tackle after a missed FG ot KO
    OK I didn't read it through Ha-ha

Probably but that doesn't change the fact that it was a clean hit.

According to the NFL rules, "It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture," and that includes "A kicker/punter during the kick or during the return." There's more: "Forcibly hitting the defenseless player's head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact of the defender's helmet or facemask is lower than the passer's neck and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him" is prohibited.

The only issue in my mind is how a kicker moving to attempt a tackle can be considered to be defenseless.

I loved the hit and I can't wait to watch it during Renegade. That should be the hit that is synced to when the music actually kicks in because it has that "oomph" quality to it.

Or that you could say it was unnessary contact in the context of the play. It certainly seemed like he was the last one with a shot to at least slow Brown down and allow the pursuit to catch up.

I'd say that if he had pulled up and wasn't in a position or angle to attack the runner and Garvin blasted him, then that would be unnessesary contact.

He will probably get fined and Ryan Clark will make a headline quote about it.

Maybe THAT'S why Clark has been playing like hot garbage all year is because he's in financial trouble and can't afford the fines??? LOL.

The NFL will punish the result, not the play itself in order to justify the fine.

Had this been 10 years ago we wouldn't even be debating this, but with the current rules I think this is probably an illegal hit whether the fans like the interpretation or not. I don't like the argument that the kicker would have made the play had Garvin not clocked him. He just as easily could have just stood there and more than likely Huber wouldn't have been strong enough to get past him. He will get a fine, and I am fine with that.

Let's not forget that kickers and punters are typically the most un-athletic players on the field. A lot of those guys are soccer player sized (not everyone is like Steve weatherford), they are the exception because they shouldn't be subject to the same brutal impacts by 250+lb linebackers.

Yes its it's a cool looking hit, and maybe the guy jokes about getting his clock rung, but in today's nfl it's an illegal hit.

At least the punter has a sense of humor about it. It's a violent sport. I had a guy ask me 20 years after football if I intentially ended his career with a hit i put on him. I didn't even know what he was talking about. I simply told him I hit everybody as hard as I could and I was sorry if he got injured but he seemed pretty butt hurt 20 years removed and now he's a cop.

I think this rule means that the punter or kicker is protected while in the act of kicking the ball. Once that act is completed and they are running down field to stop a runner, they are now a defender and this rule no longer applies. At least in mind. I still say if they are not to be hurt while making or attempting to make a tackle, then get if the field once the ball had been kicked. This new NFL is weak.

I agree BUT it doesn't seem to matter to god-el. He's gonna fine him anyway!

Just read this on NFL.com. Don't know if it's true or not.

"The sequence serves as an obvious PSA for punters on every level of the sport, but it's also fair to wonder about the legality of the play. As Barry Petchesky of Deadspin pointed out (via FootballZebras.com), punters and kickers have special protections under the rule book and are considered in a defenseless posture at all times."

I think half-empty stadiums will become the norm if defenders in position to make a tackle can't be blocked square-up.

This is also how I interpret it. As soon as the kicker becomes an active defender, he is open to the same blocks as any other defender on the field. I would say that whether the hit looked illegal or not, I don't think the intent was there, but unfortunately as others have noted, the fines come on the results and not on the plays these days.

If true that's total bs if you are in between the white lines expect to get hit it's that simple.
