It's a bit early for decent mock drafts but we are starting to see what positions may need some attention.

We don't have a 3rd rd pick but hopefully we'll get a 3rd rd comp pick.

What positions do we draft in what order. I haven't invested a lot of time to do a 7 rd wish list but I know my top 3 choices.

    Rd. 1- OT/LT
    Rd. 2- TE
    Rd. 3- CB

    What say you?

I agree with OT being at or near the top, but I think WR is a critical need as well. We need a classic "X" receiver. That's the guy who lines up on the line as a split end, and forces the attention of more than one defender because he is either more physical than the CBs (think Brandon Marshall/Anquan Boldin) or is able to blow the top off the defense in single coverage (think Mike Wallace), or both (think Julio Jones). Our receivers are best used lining up off the line as the flanker and/or slot, and really need that attention getter opposite them. I did not want to resign Wallace at anywhere near what Miami paid, but there's no doubt in my mind that not having him (and Heath) has made things more difficult on Ben because our other guys have been facing more coverage than they've ever seen. I am still really, really ticked that we did not grab Keenan Allen in the 2nd round. All he's done is have 2 straight 100 yard, 1 TD games and be Phillip Rivers' new security blanket... but I digress.

WR is pretty deep in this class. mostly 2015 class that will be coming out this year. though I will say once we end this season, we will have openings. sanders and cotchery will likely be done and I wouldn't try to keep plax at this stage. wheaton and AB, then add 6-5 moye and a 6-3 brown to the mix and we will have added size.

LT for sure and sign velasco and hopefully embernate will be back with foster and DD I think we'll be alright at G/C. I may even add a second Tackle and move on.

    CB
    TE
    OLB/ILB
    safety
    RB

it just depends on who we lose, but I don't think the cupboard will be bare at wr.

    1. LT - If we go O-Line it HAS to be a LT, and it absolutely HAS to be round 1
    2. TE - Get another Solid TE threat with emphasis on athleticism (like J. Thomas of Broncos). The we'd have Miller, the pick, and choose one out of the slew of useless TE's we have to be the #3 and cut the rest.
    3. CB - Gotta find a replacement for Ike. This way we can keep Gay in the nickel where he excels.
    4. S - I'd have to believe Clark is gone and Shamarko is in. Then we have little depth outside of Golden. Probably a mid round guy here or possibly a FA guy.
    5. OLB - depends on what we do with Worilds, but if hes gone we need depth
    6. NT - might not be a bad idea to get a big guy in the middle and shift McClendon to end to replace Kiesel
    7. RB - if and only if we get a blazer like Thomas from Oregon. Strictly a KR/PR with 10-15 offensive snaps a game type of guy

I think we are set at QB, interior OL, DE, ILB, and WR. Taking a guy at these positions would mean a guy we love has fallen wayyyy back to us, and we cant pass them up.

    1. OT - I think everyone is in agreement this is a huge need. Adn like others have said, it's gotta be a first rounder.

    2. CB - I don't think a lot of people realize what an asset Ike Taylor is to this defense. I still think he's at worst, a top 10 corner. Once he goes that leaves us with Allen and Gay and not much else at the nickel. And even Cortez Allen hasn't looked great this season. Curtis Brown will definitely not be on the team next year.

    3. SAFETY - I really think Shamarko eventually takes Troys spot, but I think Clark leaves next season. Maybe Troy moves over to FS, then. I think we need to take a safety that can cover the deep ball. Shamarko will eventually be an in the box enforcer.

    4. WR - This is coming up a lot, but honestly I don't think we need to take on that early. We've shown we can develop late round receivers, and WR is probably one of the cheapest and easiest positions to fill via free agency. We could easily find another Cotchery, Ced Wilson type of fill-in for a season or two.

    5. Maybe DE - Depends on what they do with Ziggy. We probably take a late round DE regardless. Depends on what they think of Al Woods. I'd like to see him rotating in more, as good as he looked in preseason.

    6. OG/C - This isn't a huge need but if there's a hybrid guard/center type guy in the 6th or 7th round it wouldn't be a bad pick.

I hate quoting myself but after reading everyone's thoughts I wanted to extend my wishlist with some thoughts.

    1) OT/LT- staying right here, must be 1st rd and may need to move up at a heavy cost to get the right guy.
    2) TE- Staying with a Beast TE to go with Miller and Spaeth- what he would add to this offense in the passing game & running game cannot be measured, besides, time to look for Miller ultimate replacement.
    3) CB- Again staying here with the CB, need a solid CB to groom to replace Ike and even challenge Allen and keep Gay at nickel.
    4) Safety- Clark is most likely gone, Troy has but a couple years left ( one concussion away ). If we signed/draft a top CB we could push Gay to safety and thus push this need back a year but good safeties can be found rd. 4
    5) RB- Bell and Felix are good to go, LSH and Dwyer are okay but why not gamble on finding a gem in the 5th which is entirely possible.
6)P....... Yeah I said punter, We need or could use a great punter, kinda tired of using waived vets or undrafted guys. ( this pick might change!!!!)
    7) BPA

I have to admit that I'm surprised at how little play WR is getting in this wish list. What do we have at WR for 2014 and 2015 other than AB? Wheaton looks like a player, but time will tell. Sanders is serviceable, but nothing special. None of those guys are going to command safety help over the top on most downs, or outmuscle a physical corner in the red zone. We're 2nd to last in the NFL in red zone TD %. While some of that certainly falls on the O-line and running backs, not having a true red zone threat at WR is also a major contributor. When I watch the passing offense struggle in the red zone, it's usually because Ben has nowhere to go with the ball. Our small, quick guys are solid when there's a lot of field to work with, but they're not doing much inside the 20, and offer almost nothing in goal to go situations. I haven't studied the WR crop much this season, but when I do I'm going to be looking for guys who can either beat corners in the red zone or score from anywhere on the field (or both).

I wouldn't mind moncrief from Mississippi. last year I was hoping Jordan Mathews would have come out, but i'm not seeing us do that route in RD.1 this year. jerry rices cousin, and he trains with him. not a burner though, but good hands and kind of deceptive speed.

OT and CB are two positions the Steelers don't seem to develop well though....I would much sooner sign a FA or trade for a known commodity if at all possible.

I would love an early TE that had the same skill set as Heath. COuld be a tall WR too. I would take either.
