It's an interesting read about how a scout goes about their job and a pretty important blurb about the Steelers. After reading the article it reminded me of a comment made by Tomlin a few months back about our scouts. I can't remember the details, but the gist of it was they weren't doing a very good job. The Tomlin detractors will just use this as ammunition, but hiring scouts is part of Colbert's job. I wasn't real comfortable with the idea of hiring Colbert's son and after reading this that comfort level has diminished even more.

    Good read, thanks.

Unrelated, but whenever we talk about scouts in Pittsburgh, I reminded of how Chuck Noll kept all the tape of John Stallworth and wouldn't let any other team see it, so basically nobody had him properly scouted, hence why he fell so low in the draft.

This was his first year. He interned for a couple years before getting promoted this year. Mean Joe retired from scouting and someone else too, I believe, so a couple positions opened up.

So who actually pulls the trigger Tomlin or Colbert? If the Steelers do not make the playoffs this year, do you see any major changes coming?Who has been
    evaluating our OL and CB's?

its completely different I am sure but I have a cousin who is a baseball scout for the braves. I would love his job but he has a lot of responsibility. it sounds like a gravy job but the are really held to a high standard in baseball. a couple of busts and you are looking for work. I don't know if football is any different. I think I will ask him and see if he knows.

I heard Bill Pollian interviewed and talking about the differences in player personnel decisions with each team. He used the Steelers as an example that gives their head coach a lot of say in it and the giants as an example as a team that's coach has little say in who is drafted or picked up in free agency.

I would say that it is partially both of them. I think Tomlin tells him and the scouts what he is looking for and what he wants and then they go out and put their board together, then Tomlin reviews and ultimately has the final say (Just my opinion). Another thing that leads me to believe this is the difference in the type of players drafted during the cowher era vs during the tomlin era. Not even looking at the production (which was obviously much better under cowher) but the style of players seem to be different now. This team clearly has Tomlin's stamp on it now and it shows with our record.

I agree about the Ravens, they are like the Steelers in the 90's where they could just plug an play Defensive players and they all could hit.

Steelers have no real identity, or they are in the process of changing. You got to know who you are so you know what type of players you need. When you know you are a power running team and like to get deep plass plays off playaction the potential picks are easy to find.
