Joey Porter Jr contract negotiations

Throughout the off-season, I've heard everyone question why the Steelers did things this way. In reality, it's hard to gauge anything without knowing who the sticking point is, and I think it has been Porter. His dad has been around long enough to know that it's better to be the last to sign than the first. If he was first, I was thinking it would be around $27.5M per. Now I think it's around $30M. At this point, the advantage of waiting is worn off as there are no more dominoes to fall. IMO this gets done now with an AAV around $30M with a pretty high guarantee. Guarantee doesn't really matter to the Steelers because they really do sign these deals with the intention of seeing them through, and it would take a huge fall off in his game for the Steelers to move off that since he is not an AB, Martavis Bryant level of character/injury concern.

I rarely put people on ignore list but I do a good job ignoring folk who disagree just to get attention.

 

This is certainly how they would talk about it.

I find it hard to believe that they really thought it was true given the QB play we had between Ben retiring (maybe since his injury?) and at least last year.

And even last it, I think realistic best scenarios were something like win a WC game.

I think our general strategy is "do what you can to make the playoffs this year without selling out the future...hope you catch lightning in a bottle".

And we've done a very good job executing that game plan for the last 35 years or whatever.

But we needed a lot of lightning per game across a lot of games in the playoffs to think that we could get to an win a SB.

 

I think 5 years is the same as 4 year extension, right? I think that's how it works...where longer than that doesn't increase the benefit for spreading out the cap hit of the SB.

I agree that it could be that having 2x non-cost controlled years makes the 4 year extension (5 year contract) hard to do AAV wise. So we opt to do a 3 year extension with one non-cost controlled year. Which is the same as Witherspoon (and I assume the Gonzales deal too).

 

I didn't say it was the Steelers' fault entirely. In fact, I went out of my way to say it was at least partially their fault, acknowledging that blame lies on both sides.

I actually checked that the reports were separate, not just a blogger regurgitating a real reporter's words.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers were holding out on finalizing a contract with Joey Porter Jr because they wanted to give him a record-setting deal he has shown he is worth. With Gonzales now signed this makes it possible to move forward with the signing of Porter."

 

Great news. Get 'er done Steelers.

 

Actually I'm talking about a five year extension not the usual four. This allows the Steelers more cap flexibility.
And remember Gonzales was a 1st round pick so they had 5 years of controlled cost vs the Steelers four.

 

It would be great if Porter agreed to lock himself up for that long IMO.

I don't think the extra year helps with the SB (which I think can only be spread out for the first 5 years). But that extra year could help in a restructure (but we could just add dummy years if we did that later...but that's not really a Steelers-type move).

 

But we can keep trying! I doubt if it will help though.

 

I think there is hidden information, or maybe missing information. JPJ still has some bad habits and I'm guessing that's why the Steelers are far off his number.

 

We should see in the next few days I think.

Five years would be great. Good guarantees and roughly the same AAV as Witherspoon and Gonzalez... He's very much a similar player to Gonzalez in terms of how good he is. I think he's better than Witherspoon in coverage by a good bit, but Witherspoon brings a blitzing versatility that Porter doesn't have. 5 years 165 Million? Good first two year guarantees of about 50-55 million? I think that gets it done and isn't a massive overpay. at 26, it gets us Porter through his age 31 season. So, basically his whole career.

He's only under contract for one more year.

Then we have the option to tag him for up to two more years after that.

So we can actually keep him for the next 3 years.

Both sides know this.

For deals that were just signed with Witherspoon and Gonzales, I think their teams had 4 years of control (4th year of rookie deal like Porter, 5th year options exercised - Porter was a 2nd rounder, so no option for him, then two tags).

So we have control of Porter for one season less than SEA and NE did with their stand out young CBs.

its never a good idea to piss off one of your beet players. These types of contract disputes can ruin a locker room.
