If was guys like Farabaugh are reporting and the issue is guaranteed money, then I think they could potentially figure this out. This is pretty much the final hurdle after years/apr is set.

This might get things moving in the JP jr negotiation process.

Not sure how anyone could think waiting to sign JPJ would be a smart move.

More than likely Khan wanted to get this done and JPJ’s agent held out because he knew Gonzalez would reset the market for CB’s.

I expect a contract soon for JPJ

Because 'win now' offers a lot more exciting possibilities than 'soft reset'.

Sure, as long as JPJ isn't asking for the same type of contract.

Waiting just gave Porter more reason to ask for more money, but some folks foolishly stand by the Steelers' decisions no matter how unwise they are.

That would seem to be the case, though we can't be sure where the two side were prior to Gonzalez's extension. His was one I was hoping the Steelers would beat to the punch.

Reminds me of when the Seahawks broke the bank for Jamal Adams when Minkah was up for an extension.

    Porter has no leverage

    He can wait forever

    Steelers aren’t budging

Porter's leverage improves every time another top cornerback gets a big contract. How some folks don't understand that is beyond me.

It isn't just about this season. It is about holding on to arguable the best young player on that defense through the prime of his career rather than locking up part-time starters (Herbig) and disappointments (Benton).

We simply do not have enough information to be coming to any conclusions to who is responsible for no deal being done yet.

I doubt Herbigs 4 year 100 million deal would have ever gotten Porter to the table.

We have multiple reports saying that neither side has made an offer. We also have the Steelers' history of waiting on what they think will be difficult negotiations, hoping the time pressure will force the player into taking a team-friendly offer. That is enough to at least put part of the blame on the Steelers.

Apparently, we can't fix arrogant fools who think anyone who disagrees with them is stupid.

Multiple reports especially in today’s media environment doesnt mean a whole lot, besides there are counter reports that there have been discussions and McCarthys own words would support that when he said they are at an impasse.

Pointing fingers at this time towards either side seems premature.

I would guess that the Steelers are aware of what Porters demands are and simply arent willing to meet it. And since they hold all the cards here, why would they cave.

Jerry Jones has been running a masterclass in waiting to sign your stars to big contracts for years...

And both sound much better than "status quo until the wheels fall off"!

    Yep.

Looks like Porter succeeded in waiting out everyone else out.

This means there isn't any hidden information anymore.

As expected, this new contract gives Gonzales the highest AAV. I didn't look at the guarantees in Witherspoon's contract, but I assume this is also the highest guarantees. Although the first number for guaranteed money is usually agent PR because they'll include any kind of guarantees, where fully guarantees matter way more than other things like injury guarantees.

My guess is that Porter's AAV will come in below this. Maybe a little above or a little below Witherspoon.

Probably 2 years of guarantees since we did that for DK (who wasn't an AP1, but did have PBs). But maybe we can try to at least partially hold the line here since Porter doesn't have PBs or AP1s.

I wouldn't be surprised it seems the Steelers might be behind the times in the way they handle guaranteed money in their contracts.

How does that make it the Steelers fault he isn't signed?

It could also be length of contract. Steelers looking for five years, JPJ looking for four. That would put him at 30 years old and prime for one more blockbuster contract.

I don't think that in the Steelers' minds they are trying to protect the status quo. I don't think that they were ever about keeping the streak alive. I believe what they are always attempting is to both win now, and build for the future, or, put another way, rebuild for the future without ever going through a rebuild. Not saying they've gone about it the right way, but I do think that's the vision.

The QB situation is the insight into this.

The best starting QB for today is the starter, and will not be on the team past this season: Thinking this season only.
A third round rookie project was drafted with no intention of him playing in '26, but there was never a question that he'd be on the team: Thinking future only.
A veteran journeyman, familiar with the surroundings, seems like a good fit as a backup in '26 but extremely limited long-term potential with no assurance he returns after this season: Thinking '26 only.
A second year, good, smart kid, a rough pre-season with no reason to think he is worthy of backup status in '26, but looks like a good fit in a QB room in the future as a character backup with some potential upside: Thinking of the future only.

I think they “cave” because JPJ is our best CB and we will be much worse without him?
