Joey Porter Jr contract negotiations

I loved it when Khan said that Joey has been examined by the Steelers medical staff, and they said he is good to go.

Now we just have to wait and see if Joey shows up to practice tomorrow, or if this finally because a real Hold-Out situation; with fines and missing game checks.

 

Their actions were selfish, not those of leaders helping the team. Also, Porter didn't put himself on the PUP list. The Steelers did that.

It is perfectly reasonable to say that he should be handling this differently, but you are making quite a few assumptions to support dubious conclusions.

 

Heyward wasn’t being unreasonable with his demands he was saying look you promised me this last season top dollar. He wasn’t faking an injury either. He also had a long history of multiple contracts with the Steelers so it was pretty obvious there was going to be comprise there and it was going to get done. Again I just think JPJ is very premature in acting like this. He had one really good year.

 

Yes they put him on the Pup list because they took his word for it. Now they took him off it and eluded to him never being injured. We will see if he practices now. Again it’s his first renewable contract. Heyward and Watt didn’t act like this the first go around.

 

He was selfish and argumentative and tried very hard to make it look like there wasn't going to be a compromise. If you want to move the goalposts and say it's only okay when more established players do it, that's fine, but that is not where this started.

 

The Steelers aren't stupid.

They put him on the PUP to avoid having a media storm about the contract negotiations.

 

They acted like it when they were leaders on the team, which I would argue was worse. To be honest, I don't have an issue with any of them doing what they did as long as they are ready to go when the season starts. If Porter misses game time because of this, then yes, it matters.

 

Let’s hope he signs. It would be great to see what he can do in this defense under Graham with Jamal Dean opposite him.

 

Well half the media read right through that from the beginning and now he is off the pup list so it didn’t really serve a purpose. If they would have negotiated with him during that time I can understand doing that but according to reports neither side negotiated.

 

I’m not moving the goal posts. I said all along their tenure matters. They had a history of doing multiple contracts with the team. Everyone knew it was posturing by Cam. There was intermittent communications between the team and the players agent. With JPJ it’s zero silence, no negotiations. It really appears like the Steelers aren’t budging on this one. If the Steelers hold a ton of leverage which they do and they feel like the players demands are unreasonable would you not applaud them for standing their ground? Again this is his first contract negotiation. I just think it’s a really bad look for him.

More than half for sure. Everyone knew that he wasn't genuinely hurt.

But it gives them an answer and made it so it wasn't the first question in every media availability.

This is essentially the same thing as Watt's 2nd contract.

And it will likely end the same way.

Overall...we'll find out in the next ~2 weeks I guess.

If it doesn't work out, I think it will be because of Porter. I believe that the Steelers tend to be pretty fair with contracts. And I'd also guess that they pay out a higher %age of contracts than most teams.

‘yes I agree it is. The difference is Watt had multiple pro bowls, all pros and a DPOY under his belt. And Watts agent was pushing for more and Watt went in and said enough get the deal done. I believe the way JPJ approached this was very insulting. Now as a result both sides are at a standstill. Leveon Bell was hard headed like that and it blew up on him. I hope there can be some actual compromise here to get things done. If not the Steelers hold all the leverage, whether they use it or not is a different question.

 

No DPOY when he signed his 2nd contract IIRC, but your point still stands.

He was more highly decorated than Watt was. And that used to matter to the Steelers for guaranteed money after the 1st year. But they moved the bar for 2nd year guarantees down when the signed DK last year. I expect it will slide further this year with Porter (and I think this is probably the thing that's holding up the deal).

With how the economics work, Porter probably will be among the highest CBs in the league when he signs (unless Gonzales signs first). They can make a reasonable case that he's better than Witherspoon. So I won't be surprised if he has a higher AAV than Witherspoon (by 100k or something). Especially since the Steelers tend to give less guarantees than other teams. So the compromise there might be higher AAV.

Based on this article, it looks like some **** is hitting the fan. If in fact JPJ faked an injury so he could "hold in", that injury now seems to be the thing that is preventing a contract.

This is exactly my point with JPJ and his Agent. He isn’t even negotiating in good faith. Playing games and making it way too personal. He is doing this so he doesn’t get fined while holding out. The Steelers physician said he was cleared to practice. So who is liking here?
