Honestly who cares about Howard or Allar right now?

All the more reason we should not christen Drew Allar as a backup just yet. Should he show these same level of inconsistencies in Year 2, that will be for much greater concern. As it stands today?! Drew Allar for the Pittsburgh Steelers is world's apart from the 2025 Drew Allar from Penn State.

Time will tell if Drew can tap into his tremendous potential. That said, confidence was something he desperately needed to regain after how unceremonious his end was in Happy Valley. Safe to say he has it back though how much is anyone's guess.

    Have to wait and see.

That was the biggest thing that stuck out when looking at the final roster. We are paper thin at safety and that spot could have been available if we just put Howard on IR

We didn't need it to get Dart. Dart was there and we passed on him.

What has Dart shown that he's a franchise QB, he's in the medical tent a few times every game .

Yeah, I just mentioned the Watt trade thing because his contract is an albatross at his production level from last year. If he doesn’t turn around and pump out 12+ sacks this year, it’s going to look like a really bad deal. We could’ve traded him at high value and gotten the QB and Harmon. Obviously, we could’ve just taken Dart instead of Harmon anyways

I don't get the hype around Howard. He's not an NFL QB. He's not any good.

Sure give up on a quarterback that you think has potential

And add a safety who at 53rd on the Steelers makes him about the 1680th ranked player in the nfl

    Sure

I think our QBs played as expected for the round they were drafted in.
    ARod 1st
    Mason 3rd
    Allar 3rd
Howard played like a 6th rounder

this time it worked out very predictably

(don’t jerk my chain and get me started on Kenny Pickett) LOL

Pittsburgh fans and our back up QBs….

many Pittsburgh fans still think Mason and Kenny didn’t get a fair shot.

If . You are freaking correct. If those 3 hit big time it will be an awesome draft.

Outside of Ohio state fans, and Steelers fans , I don't know who thinks Howard is all that. I seen Qb this preseason that have been cut from other teams already that look as good , or better than Howard, and please remember before preseason I thought that Howard was the guy, and Allar would be the man I didn't like.

Yeah, I'm not so sure he'll actually split reps with Howard. I have faith that McCarthy, the supposed QB guru, can tell the difference between the two and will make the correct choice as far as reps are concerned. Maybe I'm wrong though. I also wonder if he just really thinks both can potentially be developed or he would have sent Howard packing. Who knows?

I can see Rudolph being released or traded when it gets deeper into the season if roster spots are needed.

Thats not me hating on Rudolph! It’s clear as the dusts settles from preseason that McCarthy is all in on Allar and Howard. I agree neither of those guys are ready to step in now but after 8-10 games moving on from Rudolph becomes easier. But again, thats only if they need a roster spot.

Guess who else kept 4 QBs? That would be offensive guru KOC and the Vikings.

It's really hard to argue that the organization failed Kenny IMO.

Kenny failed Kenny. He's been no better (and often worse) than the QB3 on every team he's played for (which is a lot of teams at this point).

If the organization failed Kenny, it was by drafting him in the 1st based on need. Set the expectations too high for a guy who might not even be a good backup in the NFL.

I dont think anyone will argue that the Steelers did Pickett any favors in his development but all you need to know how bad he was is how easily the team gave up on him and shipped him off.

When he made that trade demand the brass probably did a jig and felt so much relief. “Quick quick before he changes his mind, get a coffee pot in return I dont care just ship him out quick!”

All true. I think we are going to see one or the other sooner then later. The Oline looks like trash so far. And yes of course it's only preseason.

Yeah, that first-round swing on Kenny Pickett is still a sore spot for a lot of Steelers fans. He measured with 8½-inch hands (smallest of any first-round QB in recent memory), posted a 17 on the Wonderlic ( very low for a stating QB ) , and was widely viewed as having only average-to-below-average arm talent. His big statistical jump came in his final college season at Pitt against ACC competition that wasn’t exactly stacked. Those red flags were real. Kevin Colbert was still GM when the pick was made; Tomlin had significant input as usual. The organization bet that the local product, the production spike, and the “he just wins” narrative would outweigh the physical and testing questions and competition.

My guess is that Kenny's time with the Steelers will be the most successful part of his career.

I get that lots of people didn't like the last HC. But he was able to squeeze reasonable records out of poor QBs by playing in that straight jacket of an offense and supporting them with good D.

I don't see how that didn't help Kenny.

I agree with the 2nd statement. Especially if we were also already working on the Fields deal in the background (and I bet calls like this are always happening).

I think the team did a ton of favors for Kenny. They put him in a system where he could be a winning NFL QB. Maybe the only system where this could happen over the larger sample of games he played with us.

They didnt help Kenny, they helped themselves win the same way Fields was able to win. They did nothing to develop him and started him way before he was ready.

I didnt realize you thought the Steelers helped him.

You kind pointed out the reason why many people feel like we as an organization didn’t help Kenny. The straight jacket of an offense. Sure we may have squeaked out some extra wins but it was always a house of cards waiting to fall when we went up against a good team. We didn’t actually develop him. Mason Rudolph had his eyes o-need u- this year finally being under a real offensive minded HC with a system in place.

I just hated the conservative play and the fear of not turning the ball over. As a result QB’s played nervous and not free. The offense was predictable because we wouldn’t -ass over the middle. It was just frustrating to watch. Tomlin coached QB’s like my son’s old youth football coach coached rbs. My kod was a rb and if the rb fumbled the coach would yank them and berate the in front of The whole team. All it did was made my son more nervous about fumbling the ball. Atheletes need to be somewhat free to let their athletic ability shine.

‘I’m not saying we should have drafted Kenny where we did by the way. I also believe Kenny has a temper and gets offended easy which holds him back from developing mentally.

    Which further proves my point.

Have to see what you have. Kyler Murray could have a Renaissance to his career. Could crash and burn as he did in Arizona. Have to wait and see.

I get the argument that putting him in easy situations may have limited his development. But IMO you need to earn the increased responsibility of more difficult decisions to make. And Kenny never did that.

If it was the system, then I think we'd have seen him do better in other systems. Instead, he's (probably) been worse elsewhere than he was with us.

Because we tried to ease the pressure on him by making it so that the success / failure of the entire team wasn't on his shoulders as much as it would be for a QB with more responsibilities in the offense.

It's similar to what Cowher did with Ben when he severely limited his pass attempts.

The difference is that Ben did amazing things with the responsibilities he was given. So he got more responsibilities.

Kenny didn't really progress...so he got benched...then traded.
