Charlie Batch said that Howard suffered a concussion. Yep problem solved for a few weeks anyway.

 

I kept saying this would happen but I thought it was Allar that would go on IR.

they wouldn’t just use an IR designation to return spot on him though would they!?

 

Convenient, I guess. But if he really is injured, this could be 2 seasons in a row he's not available for the start of the season.

 

Well I guess that's the answer but Howard will start out on IR. Not a ringing endorsement from McCarthy saying that he "has two veterans we can live with". That's like telling your wife "I can live with you but I'm really excited about the 2 hot girls that live down the street!"

Actually, I just listened to the press conference. McCarthy said he has two vets you can "win with". Typo on x post w "live with"

 

I liked the other narrative better. Two guys we don't love but we can live with until the young guys quit shatting the bed.

 

I think the NFL needs independent people to review who actually qualifies for the IR list up until the season starts. Teams would rather stick a young player on the roster bubble on IR than cut him sometimes.

I didn’t get a chance to see the game because of an incredibly busy day, but I’ll say this. Howard has had two preseasons of action. His play in camp has not risen above 3rd string backup level. He was hurt one year and apparently ended the preseason [injured].

 

and the other one is 42.

 

Howard is a waste of a roster spot. Now if you can play games and manipulate IR slots and then PS designations whatever but no way he should be taking a 53 man roster spot.

 

Put him on IR until the right QB get's hurt, trade MR and bring him back.

I dread the thought of either of our young guys having to cover for AR for any length of time but this season will most likely be a learning moment anyway!

 

allar didn't look to great last night and seemed to come back to earth. looked average at best in game two. the first game was good.

howard 26-37 229 yards 2 TD's, 3 int.

allar 30-54 351 yards, 2TDs 0 int. 1 rush TD's

preseason stats. neither were great, neither were terrible. i'd keep 4 QB's and move on.

 

Playing like a 6th round draft pick. While it's OK to be hopeful, the chance of him ever becoming a franchise QB or even a serviceable starter are slim. Same with the other two backups we have who were both 3rd rounders. We know who Rudolph is - not a starter and the jury is out on Allar. But my money says not a starter. I've been saying since Ben was in the homestretch of his career that the steelers haven't gotten serious about getting a replacement for him. They have drafted mid to late round backups like Dobbs, Mason, Pickett, Oladakun, Howard, Allar. I'll give them a pass on Landry Jones, Dennis Dixon, and Omar Jacobs because Ben was clearly the franchise guy and they just needed a backup. But the steelers should have been getting serious about Ben's replacement at least by 2018 or 2019. The non drafted QB acquisitions are even worse: Mettenberger, Paxton Lynch, Duck Hodges, Trubisky, Russell Wilson, Fields. Even Vick - this one was an unforgivable sin which sealed the deal on my disdain for Mike Tomlin.

The bottom line is that the steelers absolutely suck at evaluating, drafting, acquiring, and coaching QB talent. And I'm hoping that McCarthy can right the ship by getting a legit starter behind center who isn't collecting social security. I still don't believe that guy is currently on the roster.

 

Something my gut still tells me that our future franchise QB is still not on this team. JMO>

 

On Allar: He had 8 or 9 dropped passes on his 54 throws. I’m sure the coaching staff will factor that in. The kid has a lot to learn, but he showed me something this summer.

Howard is what he is a soon-to-be 25-year-old who lacks an arm on par with other NFL starting QBs, completes most of his passes short, and was turnover-prone.Obviously McCarthy knows more than I do, but I would cut ties with Howard now and shift the development and attention to Allar as the 3rd qb.

 

now joel, you can't fault the receivers for one and not the other. with howard we have all seen bad routes and wrong routes add to the turnovers. we know you have an allar man crush but look at the completion percentage. allar was around 50% in the second game and 47% in the last one. not good. you cut your future in half by getting rid of one of them. it doesn't have to happen this year.
