It's pre-season i.e. time for foolish discussions abound. Based on the cluster flop we have seen at O-line, I think MM needs to pick the guys he thinks are going to be the day one starters and play them Thursday.

I'd like to see what the young QB's can do with a little protection, and O-line is a group that needs a little time together to gel.

I'd like to see what the RB's can do with a hole to run through.

Cut Roman Wilson and let's see what Hurleman and Smith can do, Wilson just doesn't have what it takes.

I’d play all the starters for at least the first quarter. I don’t want Aaron Rodgers to come out flat to begin the season.

If one would suffer a bad injury those that wanted to start the starters would change their tune and call it a terrible decision.

That's why none of them will be playing on Thursday.

I wouldn't. Injuries happen all the time in the NFL. It could happen on the first play of the regular season.

Playing to avoid injury is like playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

I think the Starters need to go at least one series so that everyone (players , coaches) can get used to the entirely new system.

The first real game can’t be a practice.

I want to see Allar starting. Probably won't have the starting 10 but at least the 2nd team guys.

Injuries happen unfortunately but in a meaningless game I don't want to see any starters injured especially the Offensive Line! Thin at the tackle spot at this point so Cook and Fautanu will sit. No need to play Frazier or McCormick either.

It’s just an unnecessary risk for very little gain. I’ve seen player after player on other teams going down for the season.

Preseason is for filling out the roster, it’s not for the starters to get into midseason form.

    It should be both

One game at the end of the season changes who goes to the playoffs

Wasting games at the beginning of the season to get coordinated seems like a foolish approach to me

Typically, but based on what we've seen, it appears to be to get into training camp form.

I personally believe that all starters should play every preseason game at least one , or two drives, but Im not the head coach, and I can understand why they, or the fans don't want to do it, but I would.

    Absolutely not.

If a starting player is out there, he had better be returning from some cataclysmic injury or if he is being used as trade bait. Beyond those two aspects, absolutely not. Not worth the return on investment; nothing to be gained as far as the Steelers Starters are concerned.

What O-Line starters do you think we didn't see on that first drive against the Jets? I think the Steelers starting line played that 1st drive. They looked terrible, but I am pretty sure they were all out there.

Max and Dunk are injured, so they didn't play against the Jets. (Are they the Starters you are talking about not playing?)

You mentioned Brandon Smith who is also injured, so he didn't play WR. Granted the Starting WRs did not play, but both DK and Pittman are also currently injured.

They did play both Starting RBs, and both starting TEs. Besides the QBs and WRs, they put all their Starters for the offense on the field, and the O-Line just looked terrible!!!

    Ok Im confused

In another post you state the starters will take a whole to gel

But here you don’t want them to spend any preseason time so they gel sooner

This does not make sense to me

And if the fear is injury then by that logic we should save all of the starters until the playoffs

I don't want them to spend time in games that have no meaningful experience for them to gain. Only against starters can they gain actual experience. I stated those two exceptions for that is what usually happens within the Preseason. On the injury front, I did state returning from injury, not protecting them from it.

    My original point about starters taking time to gel still stands. Two things can be true here;

1.) Experience only can be gained when playing together.

2.) The level of competition allows greater experience to be gained.

Of the two, give me the one that will allow the team to grow while competing against the best. That is where each players strengths and weaknesses will be shown. As a result, that is how each player can mitigate the other's weaknesses while playing to each others strengths.

I don't think he will. It seems like a foregone conclusion that this will be a "redshirt" year for Allar. What he needs to do is work tirelessly on the fundamentals and develop to be ready to compete as the potential starter next year. He's not there yet. He has talent, but he still has some work to do. I understand the sentiment, but it is more important for the team to make their decision on Howard vs. Rudolph this season than to see what Allar has prior to when we need it. Its encouraging that he played well in his first outing, but he's QB3 for the year (obviously outside of injuries).

However, I can agree that we need to play the starters for at least one series. I wouldn't go more than two (and guys like Watt, Heyward, and Rodgers don't necessarily need to play), but it would be good scrimmage/practice reps so that we aren't totally rusty week one.

It’s a tricky predicament. A series of two likely won’t do much come week 1 and that’s really all any starters would ever play. I’d be ok with that just don’t think it would make a big difference. We will be rusty week 1.

Agreed a series or two isn’t much but at least for the OL I think they need time
