That wasn't the question. Free agency, and practice squad is two different things for a backup Qb.
Again the question is ,if put on the practice squad, who do you think would be more likely taken?
A weak armed 6th round draft pick with no NFL experience, or a Qb that has NFL experience, and even playoff experience?

I’m not a big Mason fan
    But
You know what you got with him
    Experience
    The other 2
    Have zilch
    Let the season run out
Let coaching staff see how the 2 rooks progress
Watch how they perform against our scout team
This is a good spot to be in with potentially 2 good qbs!

Mason would not be put on the practice squad if he was one of the options in question

You'll hate me for this. In North Western Pa it's going to drop to around 50° during some of the nights this week and could dip down into the 40's. All of the local parks have closed their pools for the year because of the cold front coming through.

Mason is set hit the $20 million mark this year. Life is good to be a backup QB in the NFL. :)

It did answer the question, clearly Mason is not sought after. You’re posing a hypothetical that cant even happen, Rudolph is not eligible and I provided actual real data, no one wants Mason.

Who ever throws the first preseason INT will be dragged through the mud even if the receiver runs the wrong route. At that moment, the player will be thrown under the bus by half the fans and even some of the media. This poll possibly will be drastically different this time next week.

I always believed in Rudolph's ability and without a doubt his development was completely mishandled by Tomlin and his staff. That mishandling can be attributed to a few things. 1) We had Ben and there was not a need for a true QB coach or plan for development. 2) Ben was like no other QB in the league and not a system QB. The system fit Ben and not the other way around which means the offense was not a plug and play. No QB was able to be inserted to continue with consistency.

Now with all that said, while I like and support Rudolph and never look at a 31-year-old as a potential franchise QB. I know quite a few fans are excited about Howard, but I haven't seen enough to impress me. McCarthy even stated he had some ups and downs and played through the adversity. I've said before the Drew Allar pick didn't thrill me, but I didn't hate it either. To borrow a Tomlinism, "You better look like varsity when playing with the JV squad." Drew Allar did exactly that. He was in control and seemed to elevate those around him. We still have a way to go and a lot to see, but I am excited about Drew Allar's future with the Steelers.

Not sought after as a starter for sure.

But he'd still get work as a backup in UFA IMO.

His contract is up at the end of the year. And I wouldn't be surprised if he has another contract in him. Staying somewhere between 1% and 1.5% of the cap.

It's funny... most are writing off Howard already. It's a little premature. Howard could end up being Roethlisberger or Marino 2.0 when running with the 1's and with nominal OT play, for all we know! Allar could totally flop like Pickett did in the regular season if something happened to Rodgers. All QBs are playing well... but that has more to do with the offensive aptitude of McCarthy and preseason vanilla defenses, than stellar play at the QB position.

I was rooting for Rudolph. He looked the part coming out of college. Seems to have Ben-like physical size/tools and he speaks intelligently in interviews. But on the field, everything he does looks slow to me, like he just doesn't have that extra gear and will to win. His legs, his decision-making, his throws. All feels a little slower to me than what you need in the NFL.

And he wasn't alone in being mismanaged by Tomlin and staff. Ben himself I think was a bit mismanaged towards the end of his career. Then Trubisky was a bad choice, the Wilson/Fields experiment failed (though Tomlin patted himself firmly on the back when he switched from Fields to Wilson), then Kenny "we got our guy" Pickett was thrown to the wolves with the worst coordinator imaginable (especially for a rookie).

And now Rudolph, after being in the NFL for 7 years, really hasn't shown much to stand out. He can certainly play a backup role and win a few games if you have a long-term franchise starting QB in place, who went out with injury and you're waiting on his return. But for a team desperately in search of a franchise QB, who already has a HOF, very short-term vet as the starter and 2 rookies-with-potential in waiting, I don't see the point of keeping Mason around. I just don't see it.

Either this season (if Rodgers goes down) or next season at the latest, one of Howard or Allar needs to be the starter, with maybe yet another QB drafted. Mason is not the long-term answer. Even if you want a vet presence in the locker room to mentor the young guys, I'd look elsewhere next year.

We finally have a proven QB developer as our head coach. I'd put every possible effort into taking full advantage of that and not wasting time on a QB without franchise potential.

I still believe in Howard but McCarthy handpicked Allar and he has the superior traits. So Im just figuring it as if they both continue to progress and do well, Allar is going to get the nod.

But you are totally right, Allar could end up being what he was his last season at Penn and that would be Howards path to starting if he continues to do well.

The question is if. I clearly said if, and you clearly avoided it.
So its ok for people to say if Marino played for the Steelers, but I can't say if??

Howard could be a lot of different Qbs, but with his arm strength he could never be Marino, or Ben. Hell Ben had more arm strength in pump fakes than Howard has in a real pass. LoL.
Again arm strength doesn't mean everything, but it means he can never be Ben, or Marino.

Brady and Montana weren't really known for their arm strength.

Culpepper, Vick and Jeff George had absolute military grade cannons for arms... and it didn't win them anything significant.
