Benton's contract will have nothing to do with whether or not they sign JPJ, when you're not paying a franchise QB is the time to sign players you want to keep to extensions.

    Man, I hope not.

It took them forever to find one, and now that they finally have an elite talent at the position, they're going to let him go because they don't want to pay him?

I just don't see it, but stranger things have happened.

He is listed as a DT per the Steelers Official Depth Chart.

I think he'll sign at the last minute, like Watt's 2nd contract.

I'm interested to see the structure for Benton, but I don't dislike this deal.

Cam can't play forever. Benton is at least OK. Would probably be better at DE IMO.

This gives us flexibility in the future because we won't be scrambling if Cam retires after this season.

I agree. Plus, there's several contracts they'll move on from or can move on from. There's plenty of cap space 27 and beyond, QB or not. JPJ, and then McCormick & Frazier fit in 28 and beyond easily as well.

The worst case scenario for Porter is the franchise tag next year....But I am sure it will be done at some point in the next month and the new contract of the Seattle CB will help the steelers to have a deal sooner rather that later since we know more about the market about the 2023 draft class at this position

    I understand.

That said, Benton is listed as a DT. I am not stating he is incapable of playing the 5 tech. Just pointing out the official information we do have.

Look at the post to which I was responding. He was at least implying that he would be fine with them doing exactly that.

At the very least, waiting made him more costly.

Sure... but the Steelers can easily free up 50m+ in cap space to make these moves possible with room to spend on FAs.

It isn't just about this year. Eventually, the bill comes due. That is why you don't overpay guys who are past their prime like they did last offseason.

The steelers will survive from this and they will not lose a impact player because of that.

I'm accounting for dead cap hits and such. Its easy to see who won't be on the roster 27 and beyond by these signings alone. And then there's guys like DK who may or may not be on the 27 roster and likely won't be on it it 28. And considering the dramatic increases in projected cap space plus even further cap casualties, I still see a pathway towards room to spare for future FA acquisitions.

The Pats have already said that they intend to reset the market with a deal for Gonzalez.

If he cares at all about maximizing his income, it makes absolutely no sense for Porter to sign before that.

They will not let JPJ walk that would be foolish

I am surprised that anyone suggested this

It is funny, right now I am waiting to hear the Khan has signed Broderick Jones to a 4 year $88 million contract. :)

I still want to see what the Guaranteed number is in Benton's 4 year deal, for me to actually evaluate how stupid this contract actually was. Right now, I just can't get over the fact that they made Backup DE Benton the highest paid Steeler D-Lineman in team history.

I think Porter will be below the CB of Seattle and Pats but not far off

To me it is the 3 year $93 million contract for Denzel Ward that should get JPJ his $30 million per year deal.

JPJ is not in the same tear as Gonzalez, Witherspoon and Gardner. Is there anyone here that would not trade JPJ straight across for either one of these guys in a New York minute?

All of those contract extensions they're signing don't kick in until next year, Rodgers, Ramsey, and Queen will likely be off the books in 2027 that's like 55 mill right there.

It's not that he'll (necessarily) top those deals. It's that them resetting the market will push his market value up too.

I actually agree with Andrew Fillipponi.
I'm a little surprised by the Benton contract. We're deep at DL.
