I would've thought Porter Jr. would be the next one to get signed.

They can’t sign Porter because of the money tied up in Watt or so we have been told

Apparently Benton gets signed out of a different pile

This essentially tells me that this is it for Cam Heyward if anything. I dont see how Pittsburgh plans to keep him after this season. Even if they could, chances are he retires. Cam has had one helluva career.

Now for the current issue at hand, what becomes of Joey Porter Jr?! I dont think this is it for him but I also am not sure as to how Pittsburgh is going to extend him now. Will have to wait to see what the updated cap looks like.

Signals to me the IDL is set for the foreseeable future sans depth of course. I like this move tbh.

I think this move won't effect JPJ much, but it definitely shoving Broderick out of the door.

This is from the same guy who insists they shouldn't overpay Porter because "it's not Monopoly money."

Who said they can't sign Porter because they overpaid Watt? Blowing so much money on a player who is no longer worth anything near what they are paying him does limit what they can spend elsewhere, but they certainly can do it if they wish. The point was that it limits what they can do, which is inarguable among the sane.

I'm sure they could still fit Porter Jr. new deal under the cap, there will be some big contracts coming off the books next year.

    Same.

Benton may finally shine now. That said, people tend to forget that Interior Lineman play usually takes up to three seasons to see meaingful results. This doesnt exempt how Benton was used previously but one has to be objective here.

    Fair to both points.

Seeing the updated cap though would really help all three of us.

Agree. Trade his payroll for Heyward and Herbig's for Highsmith's. I still think they can fit JPJ in there somewhere plus I don't see DK being on the roster much longer as well, which creates even more space for JPJ.

Why? What has Benton shown to warrant this? They haven't even signed Porter yet. So much money is wrapped up into the defense. They will need to obtain 2 ILBs next season.

Another Steelers backup gets huge money. We thought it was bad when Khan was signing starters to huge money, now he is signing 2nd string backups to huge money with Herbig and now Benton. As bad as Benton looked last year, I was expecting to see him walk out the door at the end of this season after losing his starting job at NT to Yahya Black in training camp.

Benton has lost his starting Nose Tackle job to Yahya Black, and will now be the Steelers backup DE behind Cam and Derrrick.

WTF.... Khan making the Steelers Herbig and Benton the most overpriced backups in the league. Just plane Stupid, we thought TJ Watt was the most overpriced, but Khan telling the rest of the league to Hold my Beer and stand back, because I am going to take it to a whole new level of stupidity. :)

Backup Benton has just become the highest paid Steelers Defensive Lineman in their history, all while sitting on the bench behind Hayward and Harmon.

Benton is going to shine now that he has lost his starting job to Yahya Black. Is he going to shine from the bench in 2026?

There is something called succession planning. All good orgs do it if they want to avoid gaps in future.

Benton is no longer competing at the NT spot. Going to be a DT behind Cameron Heyward. Heyward, as I said, is likely done after the season.

Porter’s agent has to know he just lost a lot of leverage on getting the number his client is asking for.The Steelers added Jamel Dean and Asante Samuel Jr., both of whom have been playing well in camp, and rookie Daylen Everette has looked really good too. I like Joey Porter Jr. a lot, but I also think the Steelers are in a strong position to wait him out and force him to come down on his asking price. On top of that, Porter is currently hurt.Does anyone have any real info on offers the Steelers have actually put on the table for him?

He’s not hurt he is holding out to get paid.

I’ve heard he wants 30 per year and the Steelers are more around 25 per. Pretty big gap.

Games are won up front, Steelers are building great trenches. Love it.

Weidl was brought in to help do this. Wish there was a way to keep this guy long term.

    Hmmm,

For the 2026 NFL season, the non-exclusive cornerback franchise tag is $21,161,000, and the transition tag is $18,119,000. Porter might get tagged.

    https://overthecap.com/position/cornerback/2026

There is no way he gets 30M per year. 1) He's not worth it. 2 ) The Steelers have a very good CB room.

they interviewed heyward during the game (missy mathews) and he mentioned retirement. remember next season rodgers, possibly heyward, queen, and a few others could be gone allowing a lot of money to be freed up.
