The odds aren't in McCarthy's favor of finding and developing a QB

What the hell is Dillon Gabriel doing on this list? Not a 1st round pick. Levis went 33rd, so I can see why he made the cut.

It is crazy how the Browns have basically already thrown Gabriel to the curb. FYI Gabriel was the Browns 3rd round pick 94th overall.

You don't draft 3rd round QBs to be long time starters.

Exact same pick as Mason (76 OA).

At that spot, it's a win if you get a Mason Rudolph.

Says who??? And its clear that Allar has first rd talent, he oozes all the traits you want in a QB.

Down season which wasnt entirely his fault but regardless, thats different from having elite traits which he has.

Mike McCarthy's success story Dak Prescott says HI. :)

Allar was drafted because of his ceiling. Drew is either going to hit it big or be gone from football in 4 years. I don't think any draft sites out there ever talked about Allar becoming a career backup.

i think alot of it is who is dedicated and will work hard, stay after practice, study film, and not get distracted by the big contract and everything that goes with it. Brady, Manning, Brees, those guys worked their asses off. Most of the good Qb’s did. Maybe im oversimplifying a bit but alot of it is simply who can stay focused and put the extra work in? We know most of these guys have the physical ability. Its the mental thats the question.

Bottom line is drafting a QB in any round is a crapshoot.

Many 1st round QBs busts and then there are Joe Montanas that are drafted in the 3rd.

Pretty important preseason for these young QBs.

I like the pick of Allar because I think a majority of these 1st round pick blusters are due to piss poor management of the player. He throws a pretty ball. How's his decision making and leadership after getting hit on the chin by a 300lb defensive end lineman?

I actually like Howard's knowledge and attitude also, but we've seen nothing of him yet.

If it's me, if Allar and Howard show promise at this position i would be either keeping all 4 or just cutting Mason and roll the dice.

The Steelers have really no answers for this position next year and beyond standing at this moment in time now.

I guess we will find out shortly.

yes they do have answers beyond this year. two young guys with potential. isn't that all a draft pick is? at least one will be in year 3 and one will be in year 2 at that time. still on rookie deals. by the time they are ready for a contract many of the high priced defenders will be gone and a lot of money will be available to make a decision.

Any one can be a long term staters. Purdy and Prescott come to mind as QB drafted after round 3 that became good long term starting quarterbacks.

It's obviously within the realm of possibility.

But expecting us to not look for a starter because we already have a mid- and late- round pick on the roster (for now) isn't a good call IMO.

It's very clear that SF didn't drafted Purdy assuming that he'd be the eventual starter. They would have drafted him much earlier if that were the case.

Except he doesn't know how to drop back from center? And has bad footwork?

He has a strong arm. My understanding is that he fairs poorly when under pressure. Hopefully it's something MM can fix.

QBs with first round talent get drafted in the first round in the NFL because everyone is desperate for QBs.

QBs are over drafted far more frequently than they are under drafted.

Hopefully this won't be the case with at least one of the two guys we (currently) have on the roster.

Sounds to me from recent interviews that MM has Mason as QB2 (likely Rooney's preference IMO). If that's the case, it will be interesting to see if they try to keep both young guys. I tend to think that having 4 QBs on a roster is a waste.

And if they feel like the young guys aren't good enough to be QB2 this season, I don't know how anyone can think they'll believe they're good enough to be QB1 next season.

    I didn't say it couldn't happen.

I said that it isn't likely to be the plan.

Prescott started in his first year.

We have Allar trying to learn 3-step drops. And MM basically said the other day that Mason is very likely to be the backup.

Allar's probably QB4 right now...maybe QB3. Prescott was QB1 from the jump. Was that because of injury? I don't really follow the Cowboys.

I don't think they should be compared at this point in their careers.

Again...I hope to be wrong about Allar.

I'm sure this is part of it. Probably the reason that guys like Ryan Leaf fail.

I think it's also just much, much harder to play QB at NFL speed vs. NCAA speed. The players are just much, much better.

I don't even want to think of a season that earns us an early pick but I get what you're saying. Unfortunately, we don't have enough depth at key positions to allow us to package a few guys to move up and get someone who is worthy of the trade.

That being said, do whatever you have to do to get an elite QB because you don't win without one!

Bringing back Rodgers means that the plan for this year is to be in the middle again.

Maybe next year, we'll have a different focus. But my guess is that we'll draft a QB early...and maybe even sign a vet if we don't trust that one of Howard or Allar can be a backup this season.

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall during the discussions about AR?

Side A = If we bring him back we simply delay finding out what we have in young potential talent at QB.

Side B = If we bring him back it gives us a better chance in each and every game ........ maybe .............. for one more year ...... as long as he doesn't get hurt.

IMHO somebody is asleep at the wheel. Or else, someone is desperate to give Cam and TJ one last chance.

Yep, it's expected to be a loaded QB class in 2027 you keep drafting one until you find one.

Prescott was already a established starter when McCarthy got to Dallas.

To me it seems pretty clear that the plan is to do everything we can to not play meaningless regular season games.

I think because Rooney is rich because of the team. Unlike many other owners who have a team because they are rich.

And I think he thinks (knows?) that Steelers fans aren't likely to be all that patient if we have several non-competitive seasons.

I think that is all true but why isn't he thinking about the fans patience once the AR game is over? And he damn sure didn't seem to care about the fans patience with Tomlin!

    Maybe he just like's Aaron's initials?:hehehe:

If by elite traits you mean size, arm, then ok. But you are far too focused on the physical and missing the more important mental aspects. Decision-making, processing, handling pressure were not something you can call elite in his college career.

Jason Garrett developed Dak Prescott.... just like Bill Cowher developed Ben Roethlisberger.... just like Mike McCarthy developed Aaron Rodgers.

    See the pattern?

No popcorn required for development of Ben. :lolol:
