Howard or Rudolph?

There is no way to know which quarterback is playing the best yet. We only hear whispers from the eyes of people who's opinions I don't fully trust.

I find it hard to believe that Allar is playing better than Rudolph this early into it. It just doesn't make sense to me. I hope Allar is an absolute stud and develops and plays out of his mind and is the future of the franchise and becomes a superstar player. But until I actually see it, I'm not buying into the talk. I like the kid and wanted the team to draft him, but he did have some significant work to do to prepare.

What I will say from just watching a few clips is that his mechanics look much better and his footwork is much quicker and much better than it ever was in college. He looked heavy footed at times, and watching what little video of his camp, his feet are moving quickly and he is resetting his feet and is ready to throw much quicker while being in better position to throw. That's great, but that with nobody trying to hit him. He is coming off a major knee injury, so there may be some fears to get over regarding defenders near his legs. That alone makes me want to see how he reacts when the action is real.

I'm rooting for Allar and Howard to do very well. It only makes the team stronger if they have multiple quarterbacks that can play. Maybe Rudolph finds an offense that fits his skill set better? Who knows? I just want to be able to see it with my own eyes to get a better idea about where all these players are mentally with the game, and physically with the mechanics and the velocity on the ball.

 

Maybe not. Allar is reported to have bad mechanics which will take some time to correct, in all likelihood, he will be a good QB in a year or two. Howard has a lot of the tangibles and a tough mental track record.

how do you know he will be a good Qb? Even if he has bad mechanics, if he is going to be good we should still some good decision making abilities early on, imo.

 

Basically because he has a lot of the tangible qualities in a quarterback that you look for.

I guess we will find out. Coaches say all kinds of things. He doesn't want to say he'll be cut regardless.

I like Howard, and would like to keep him. The reality is it's going to be hard to drop another skilled roster spot that could actually have an impact his year.

People hate on Mason, but the guy has experience playing against starters in this league with some success. He's pretty much a career backup at this point

 

Fittipaldo is a straight shooter. Here's his view;

My prediction: If none of the qbs get injured, steelers are going to have 4 qbs on the roster. Start getting used to it

The two quotes you list above sound like a more realistic picture of what is happening.

This isn't me banging on the two young quarterbacks. That's just the way football works. If a 7-year vet like Rudolph isn't playing significantly better than both guys getting their first pro playing time at the end of preseason, he probably shouldn't be on the team.

Rudolph turned 31-years old in July. Will Howard will be 25 in September and Drew Allar just turned 22-years-old in March. He's just a baby with a lot of growth potential.

I am hoping we see real growth by the two young quarterbacks. Clearly, Howard is under more pressure to perform right now. He is older with more experience than Allar, plus he is basically battling Rudolph for a roster spot unless McCarthy really does keep four QB's.

Young and talented always trumps older and steady. I think the move should be to keep the players they believe will be the better finished products, not who is better this second.

 

Rudolph=The Three Bears.... not too hot, not too cold, which is why I think he will start the season as QB2 regardless of the stories out of camp.

 

Will Howard is behind both Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar at the moment and has a lot left to prove. With three preseason games coming up, Rudolph either needs to play poorly, or if he’s just average, Howard will have to clearly outplay him to climb the depth chart.

Allar is a lock to make the team. He has made several down the field did you see that type of throws.

I rather see McCarthy make up his mind after the 2nd pre-season game and give the majority of the 3rd game to Allar.
