Negativity gets the headlines and clicks but I fully expect MT to take the positivity route with his comments on players and teams. He learned how to wax on about opponents during his coaching days.

It took Jim Plunkett nine years to catch on in the NFL, just saying.

QBs don't get that much time anymore, unfortunately.

True, They dont usually get half that time. Good thing Terry wasnt drafted in todays environment.

KP is coming up on 5 years, i would think this year is his last shot to show he can play in this league.

    This.

Just like Colbert, he'll talk about how Kenny is a good kid and won a bunch of games with him.

I still think that D Johnson is the only player I ever really heard Tomlin say anything negative about (when he was on the Rats). Would be interesting if someone told us what went on behind the scenes with DJ.

I'd assume that it was the Mike Wallace effect. Similar to what AB did after Wallace rejected the Steelers offer and AB got a new deal that went straight to his head. DJ got a new deal after the AB drama and listened to all the talk about him being the next AB, having better route, more complete player and then like Mr. Big Chest he began acting like a tool but let's face it he was no AB and it was a bad look.

True. Amazing that the 49ers gave up two first-round picks in 1976, and a first and second-round pick in 1977 only to release him after the season. Oakland was like, "thank you very much."

Didn't Plunkett play for and was drafted by the Patriots? Before my time...but I saw some old 70's highlights of him wearing the red patriots jersey.

behind the scenes? DJ showed us more than enough on the field to show he was a selfish idiot.

I’ll never forget the running backwards and dropping the ball vs KC when no one was around him.

He was a great route runner underneath but he really and truly was a terrible teammate. Even AB was a better teammate than DJ. Is he out of the league?

Edit: He is a Brown.. that tracks. lol

He clearly went off the rails.

I think that KP's inability to throw TDs crushed the morale of both DJ and Pickens.

And somehow, Pickens was the more stable of the two.

    WRs are an odd bunch.

Yes. When Chuck Fairbanks became head coach of the Patriots in 1973, he installed a wishbone-style option offense and the injuries began.

You don't think it started before Pickett? Ben force fed him the ball and he either dropped it or ran backwards more than anyone since Barry Sanders. If that season were he went almost the whole year before getting his first TD didn't break him, I seriously doubt that Pickett had any effect on him.

LoL. Dude that was the year that Ben had already retired.
When Ben was the Qb he had 5tds, 7 tds, and 8. The 1st year Ben retired he had 0tds.

In Ben's last year, I think he was probably the lower-end WR1 we eventually paid him as.

    He had: 169 targets. 107 receptions. 1161 yards. 8 TDs. YAC 527.
    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JohnDi01.htm

Might not be a fair comparison, but this is better in every one of those categories than Metcalf had last year (although DK only played 15 games). Before looking it up, I would have guess DK had more YAC last year than DJ did in 2021.
    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MetcDK00.htm

Maybe it started here...and Ben probably would have made him look even better if he was younger...although maybe the throw short run long type receiver DJ was wouldn't have been Ben's favorite type of target in his heyday.

The year DJ didn't catch a TD was 2022. The year after Ben retired.

That was Mitch/Kenny. So not purely Kenny.

The next year was his last year with us was 2023...Kenny/Mitch/Mason.

I'd imagine that the seeds of it were there when he was still with Ben. But I think the year with no TDs kind of broke him mentally. But he did end up with 5 (in 11 starts) in 2023. Edited to add: I looked this up after. Only one of his 5 TDs in 2023 came from KP. DJ missed 4 games early. Caught a TD from Kenny against TEN from Kenny. All of his other TDs came after Kenny got hurt in ARI. I think 3 of his TDs came from Mitch and 1 from Mason.

But he was pretty clearly broken mentally based on how his career went after he left.

They did have a punishing running game led by FB Sam "Bam" Cunningham.
