Alas, Hunter Stratton is gone again. Traded to San Diego for another RHP. Typically this kind of move happens when both teams need to free up a spot on their 40.
And the Ozuna clock keeps ticking…..

 

The pitcher they recently got, Rob Marinaccio, has been DFAed. Wow, they seem to be unafraid to cut personnel loose now if they don’t pan out. This is refreshing.

Wish they had obtained Coby Mayo from the Orioles to replace Ozuna. He plays third base and outfield and has the weirdest platoon differential you ever saw. Against left handed pitching he puts up Barry Bonds numbers. His OPS against lefties is over 1. Against righties he is 3/4 of Hank Davis and couldn’t hit Steve Blass, and Steve is in his 80s too! Funny type of hitter, but smart organizations figure out what a ballplayer can do and use that to win ball games.
Wouldn’t have cost much, and he would have feasted on all the left handed pitching the Pirates face.

Ozuna is history as of today. Calling up Ronny Simon.

Soto has been slightly better coming in earlier than the 9th. Will be interesting to see how the newbies turn out. Yates did fine last night. Would it be surprising to see Skenes maybe shut down for rest of season (like Keller) after tonight's game, depending on how he does? Losing 3 of 4 to Reds and 2 of 3 to D Backs was inexcusable and most likely killed any chances of that last dangling WC spot.

 

I was about to say “So long Ozuna…….I hope they don’t call Ronny Simon up.” But they did. He couldn’t hit Rowdy Tellez’s grandma, especially if she threw left handed. He is the polar opposite of what they need.
Once again, they have replaced a player with another version of that player. Maybe a little improved, but not enough to make a difference. They need someone who can beat up on left handers and who would accept the DH role. You could find those critters on the waiver wire.
I think you can still trade after the deadline, but players have to clear waivers. Does anyone know how that is done?
I hope they give some DH at bats to Reynolds. They have to find a way to have Mangum, Cruz, Reynolds, and Valdez all in the lineup.

We knew it would happen at some point, and now it's sadly upon us. The annual summer swoon, Call it the Mendoza curse which sadly even some of these starters could only wish to achieve this low standard (you paying attention Henry?). Don't see any reason to rush back any of the injured players and kind of feel for the new guys who just got traded to the Bucs. Good news - Kenny and the NFL open the NFL season in a short while. Yay!

Well, Steelers camp is in full swing so the Pirates are welcome to suck now. To their credit, it did take them longer to suck than in most years. My honest assessment is that they made a lot of the right moves but didn’t replace underperforming players soon enough. 2026 will be remembered as a season of missed opportunities. They had the best shot in years to actually do something. With the 2027 season in jeopardy, this may be as close as we get.

And in fairness, the injury bug hit them pretty hard.

 

Under .500 and in last place in NLC. All is normal in Pirate land.
