Broderick Jones cleared to play

1. During Dotson's rookie yr, decastro got hurt and Dotson was thrust into the starting lineup... during that time, he was our best lineman..... Decastro came back early and was immediately placed back in the starting spot, even though he wasn't 100% and it showed....

2. Funny thing about Daniels signing was that he played the left side in Chicago, but Tomlin still flip flopped him and Dotson

3. As far as the mental mistakes Dotson had, they did indeed come from the left side and not the right.... also some of that is placed on the blocking scheme of the coach

 

1. It would have been wild to bench DeCastro for a rookie with 4 starts (4 penalties in 4 games here...1x false start, 2x ineligible downfield, 1x holding). I don't remember Dotson's 4 starts specifically. So I'm taking your word that his starts were replacing DeCastro. Note that this isn't great for your argument about his penalty issues with us being mostly because he was on the "wrong" side. But does fit with the idea that being traded "scared him straight).
2. Daniels was a big UFA signing. He got to choose the position he wanted to play here. He had experience playing the other side (and C too IIRC). Per Gemini, Daniels has played ~3500 snaps at RG, ~1600 snaps at LG, and ~ 500 snaps at C. We moved him to the side he wanted to play that he thought was his natural position. When you're the high value UFA that comes in, you don't get bumped by the young guys who can't keep a consistent starting job because he takes around a penalty a game. Just like you don't bench DeCastro for a rookie OL.
3. See point 1. He made these same mistakes with us when he was playing on both sides. I think being traded made him really dedicate himself to dialing in mentally. But it's impossible to prove.

I'm not sure you can conclude anything with the piss-poor coaching we had at O-line.

 

Actually Pat Meyer did a pretty good job of coaching the OL

I wasn't a huge fan of the OL coaching either.

Seems like the system and how he teaches handwork is odd and hard for some guys to learn.

But what do I actually know about OL work at the NFL level? Pretty much nothing.

So I'm just going off things I've heard on podcasts and stuff.

Let's look at other young OL who played for us recently that aren't Jones.

• Frazier: High pedigree. Successful.
• Troy: High pedigree. Successful.
• McCormic: Not high pedigree. Successful. A very pleasant surprise. If it were Munch who was our OL coach, I think we'd hear a lot more about how coaching made him successful.
• Dan Moore: Not high pedigree. Average starter. Traded for good value.
• Spencer Anderson: Not high pedigree. At minimum a good tackle eligible and good iOL backup.
• McCollum: Not high pedigree. Not a world beater. But when he had to play C when Frazier was hurt, we had our best rushing totals of the year I think (at least in consecutive games).
• Cook: Not high pedigree. Pressed into service because of injury. Played above expectations...maybe well above expectations.

Of these guys, it seems like it's only Jones who delivered below expectations.

And we knew that Jones was a raw high risk / high reward guy when we drafted him. Maybe playing at Alabama inflated what people thought he was?

Again...I wasn't a huge fan of the previous OL coach. But the actual results of the players relative to reasonable expectations is pretty good. Except for Jones.

When it's one guy that doesn't fit the pattern, maybe it's the one guy and not the coach?

I don't know...and I'm still glad we changed our OL coach.
