This isn’t the 90’s where a backup QB sticks around for 6 years with the same team and proves value.

As long as the check clears and you have a chance to play if a QB goes down you are no worse off in Philly, Carolina, Tampa, etc..

It’s called sarcasm in response to your overprotectiveness of Pickett.

You werent even on this board when the majority of Pickett conversations took place so are you just carrying arguments from the place you came from and assigning them to everyone here? I know I never said Pickett would be out of the league soon although in light of seeing teams treat him like a hot potato I wouldnt doubt it now.

Teams still value a good BU if they have one. Obviously no team has looked at Kenny and said, this is a guy that can keep us afloat if our starter goes down.

So he’s not a starter and he’s proving he isnt even BU material, at what point do you acknowledge hes just no good. Seems like a nice kid, just not an NFL QB.

I agree with some of that, over drafted for sure, bad situation definitely but there was never anything that showed he really could run an offense. I think the kiss of death for him and where I really had to face facts was when Rudolph came in and the offense looked so much better. I tried to defend that at first but the more time that went on and then seeing how he handled the signing of Wilson and then the Steelers shipping him off so fast, it all added up to Pickett not having what it takes to play at this level.

There is no chance in the world that they trade Pickett if they thought he just needed time to learn the game. They realized they made a mistake and Pickett made it easy on them to move on from him.

But from the Eagles point of view, if Kenny is so good, why did they let him go?

I'll take some heat, I know but I really do not give a rat's ass! Pickett's reign with the Steelers was extremely hampered by Tomlin and his offensive genius gurus. We all know that. The Steelers have screwed with Mason Rudolph (same coaching gurus). I do not trust the Steelers with their fascination with Old Man Rodgers, allowing Mason Rudolph to flounder in no-man's-land in perpetuity, a probable screwing of Will Howard and an additional flirtation with Drew Allar. The Steelers' development of young quarterbacks is shameful. With Tomlin gone and his successor anointed the new Messiah, we will see what the football gods allow. I don't have too much hope. On that note.....HEY....Baltimore Ravens rookie Diego Pavia was just cut.....hurry Steelers....you could have the luxury of FIVE quarterbacks.....

Agree with this. Steelers should have moved on from Rodgers and old QBs. This would have been a good season to roll with Rudolph, Howard and Allar. Let the chips fall where they may. I don't see Steelers competing with the AFC elite this year, with Rodgers. There's been some good FA pickups and the draft was OK... but it's not enough to move the needle, IMO.

I think every fan base ends up with a small group who worship the QB they draft. Even when that drafted QB isn't worthy of the worship. It's silly really. No different than any other position, in that any of these guys can bust.

If the Steelers had measured his balls, then they would have had what they needed to steer clear of him in the early going of the draft. Overdrafting these guys is never a good idea, and Kenny was not only overdrafted for what he is as a QB talent, but also his weak pocket presence was overlooked. Honestly I cannot think of a QB who succeeded at this level while looking like a scared rabbit from the rush.

You can count me as part of that group I guess.

I thought we should have brought back both Kenny and Mason and let them battle it out, rather than sign Russell Wilson.

I currently want them to go with Allar next year, so we don't spend another early draft pick on a 2027 QB. I am really hoping the Steelers don't spend multiple 1st round picks on a QB next year. I am not a big fan of Howard, and hopes he spends the year on the practice squad and returns in 2027 to compete for the backup spot behind Allar. Howard was on the IR most of last year, and that resulted in No practice time with the coaches; players on the practice squad get to actually practice. (FYI for all those that want the Steelers to fake a QB injury to put someone on IR)

Because their 3rd string QB played at least as well as he did.

Same as a 3rd string QB in every NFL organization Kenny has ever played for.

When he left the Steelers, I thought he'd end up being an average to above-average backup.

That hasn't been the case so far.

And I don't know how many more teams will take a chance on him if he doesn't at least hold down the QB2 job this year.

We'll see if he can out play Haynes King for that job in Carolina.

I do think Mason got the short end of the stick a lot.

But he did get a chance to be a starter when he left. He did not succeed in that role.

I'd imagine that the overlap of people who really like Kenny and people who are fans of Pitt is pretty close to 100%.

Yeah I have suspected that, I’ve seen that in other topics as well. College fans can be far worse than NFL fans with their tribalism.

This is what I assumed was going to happen.

But when there was a chance to get Wilson for nothing and Fields for a song, I absolutely think that was a better call than bringing back those two guys.

The QB decision I quibble with (although it probably wouldn't have mattered in the end) was staying with Wilson at the end of the season when it seemed clear he was done. I would have liked us to at least try going with Fields. Even if he wasn't the best passer, at least he had special talent running the ball.

I don't think it changes the outcome of the season though.

I'd say your logic of wanting to bring Kenny back to battle with Mason as opposed to signing Russell Wilson was sound. What I'm referring to is the way fans obsess over the QB position. You can take any busted QB, and the higher they are drafted the more buy-in there will be from the faithful that he's the future king. Look at any high bust, like for example the most recent being Anthony Richardson, and you can bet there's a group who want to shift blame everywhere but the player. Zach Wilson with the Jets too I am sure that was true, or Trey Lance with SF.

As it pertains to Allar, there is no reason to push him into the job. I think doing that is more likely to lead to a busted pick. The proper approach is to draft them with an answer in front of them, or at least a strong competition of vets ahead of them on the depth chart, and then let them battle it out. If he doesn't push his rook season, hey no problem. But by the end of that first season he should at least feel like a strong option for your scout team, and ideally be on that scout team causing your defense problems. If not, then you draft another QB and keep building the competition in that room.

It is really no different than any other position, at least until you find your guy who you know can do the job. And even then you'll be in better shape if he's got someone behind him who is young with upside, as the human nature (laziness) side of things is then countered somewhat by the threat of competition. Last thing you want to do is let a QB hold you over the barrel. Looking at this last draft, I think that is why LA drafted Simpson. Or why the Raiders drafted Mendoza, who of course was an obvious choice for them but their QB room overall looks a ton better this year. The change is significant I think. They will have competition and it will serve them very well in the near future.

everyone has sucked with the Titans.

I would guess its a system issue there too. The new offensive system were implementing here might be the best chance to see who can really play Qb.
