For me things can only get better. If McCarthy does well and wins playoff games it’s a huge accomplishment and step in the right direction. If we don’t win a playoff game it’s the same as having MT here because he hasn’t won one in a decade. So for me there is only possible upside. I couldn’t care less about 10 wins and a 30 point WC loss vs winning 6 or 7 games and not making the playoffs. Both results equally suck.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin holds a career NFL playoff record of 8-12 (.400 winning percentage). Most of those wins came early in his tenure using players he inherited from Bill Cowher. He also relied on coordinators he didn’t hire, including Bruce Arians and Dick Lebeau to win the vast majority of his playoff games. When they left, we were essentaily done winning playoff games.

An 8-12 playoff record is simply not good enough. Among all Hall of Fame coaches (a group Tomlin is not, and should not, be part of), a .400 playoff winning percentage would rank dead last on the totem pole.

I have a friend who is inside the Steelers organization and he said Tomlin's ego was so huge he didn't believe he needed anybody else. I think that is evidenced by the coaches he let go and the coaches he hired.

I dont think that is true either, tomlin coached Ben for the majority of his career and Ben was most definitely a gunslinger. Also I would say the league has shifted away from the gunslinger offense and focused more on time of possession. The reason Tomlin didnt have great playoff success over the last decade is most likely due to QB play and not some inability to adapt. Andy Reid has been running his offense forever, so for example: Reid was 10-9 in the playoffs in Philly and then 18-7 in KC, he is still running his same offense he just has Patrick Mahomesat QB.

Tomlin's ego was a major part of his downfall. Too much pride to surround himself with other top tier coaches thinking they would steal his shine. To your point his success came early when he was surrounded by other good coaches.

Actually, that's cool that the head chef would take the time to do that!

Waste of time , these actual things that happen only matters to haters when it happens to other teams. I can't count the time I've heard these excuses when we beat a team we aren't supposed to.....well their so, and so got hurt, but for some reason that doesn't appear to apply for us. No amount of facts can change a close minded persons thoughts, and if it does they are stubborn enough to act like it didn't.

no, they were expected to be contenders from 2011 to 2018. And having or not having Shazier wasnt going to make a big difference in the 2017 divisional game. The jags beat us handily with Shazier earlier in the regular season at Heinz field. We came out flat that game and came out flat again in the playoff game. Remember we were heavy favorites going into that divisional game.

and if your bringing up injuries as an excuse why dont you mention key injuries to our division rivals in recent years? If Burrow, LJ and for the last year Mahomes were healthy we might not have snuck into the playoffs. Its not tomlins magic that got us in, its injuries to our rivals and some magic by TJ when he was still playing at a high level if anything.

and getting back to losing Shazier as an excuse in 2017, Noll lost both his starting linebackers in Super Bowl IX at halftime in a close game and still found a way to win. So great coaches do find a way to overcome injuries.

I stopped reading after that, because that has to be the STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD on a Steelers message board!!!!

This team has been desperately seeking Shazier's replacement since December 2017. Shazier was on his way to being one of the best to ever play the position when he was injured. I would say if Ryan Shazier was not injured, you could add 2 more Superbowl Trophies to the case, one of them being 2017.

Grow up. Thats so much hyperbole. Shazier was good, all star level, but your making him out to be something he just wasnt. We were 11th ranked in run defense the year prior and like i said had our heads handed to us by the jags, at home in the regular season. Steelers just came out flat that game, they and tomlin were looking past the jags to the AFCC. Everyone knew it, that gave the jags huge bulletin board material.

Tomlin wasnt great the last 15 years, i cant even say he was good. If Noll had been the coach with these results i would say the same thing. Its just been poor to mediocre coaching the steelers have had for the last 15 years.
