You know it might just work too ... especially since the listing of Steeler cuts (at least over at PFT) has J.D.Woods name tucked in there real nice and neat, right in between John Parker Wilson and Jeremy Wright. ;)

Surprised Batch got cut so soon. I guess there was no way he was coming back soon?

Well we still have a gluttony of RB's and no clear #1......

People keep mentioning JD Woods I don't remember him doing much in preseason Moye and Justin Brown seem to be better options as 5th and 6th receivers they both have some size. With the trade to get Felix Jones that sealed Batch's fate.

I'm not surprised at any of the cuts. I'm really surprised at Spence being put on PUP instead of IR. I haven't read anything that would indicate that he may be ready for football this season, but if he is coming along that well, it's great news for him. I'm pulling for the kid to make it back and have a chance at a career in the league.

The PUP list is different from the that special return IR spot.

Heres a blurb on the PUP (since I didnt feel like typing it myself I copied and pasted from wiki):

    Preseason PUP

A player who, as a result of football-related injuries, is unable to take part in training camp practices may be assigned to the preseason PUP list. Players can be moved off the PUP list to the active roster at any time, even after one practice. A player cannot be placed on the PUP list, however, once he has taken the field for a practice, even if only for a few minutes.

    Regular-Season PUP

A player who finishes the preseason still on the PUP list can then be placed on the regular-season PUP list. Such players must sit out the first six games their team plays. At that point, teams have a three-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional three-week window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season.

Go here http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2012/8/30/3280056/nfl-injured-reserve-rules for clarification on the IR w/ designation to return and how it works.

    Anyways...

Heath could just be activated off the preseason PUP and be inactive until he is ready to play...IF they feel he will be ready before the above mentioned timelines. If not then they will probably leave him on the PUP.

Spence is already on the PUP...but IF they feel when the time "expires" for this...that he will not be able to return this year they can just IR him.

Jones will probably be fine as the reports are saying...might miss a little time/etc...shouldnt need the special IR

Bell...who knows...its a mystery right now...if they feel they should use their 1 spot on the special IR fine...or they could just let him be one of the inactives on game day until he is ready again.

I've heard he's made some decent progress. this at least gives him a chance to come back later this year...if he's not ready they can just IR him and move on to next year for him.

That was the surprise to me, that we didn't cut Golic. Has he even seen the field during a game?

I thought he showed some real skill the first preseason game, getting flipped and hanging on to he ball and then the toe tap reception on the sideline. He seemed to be pretty polished.

I saw all three games Jack. Never remember Golic in on a play. Even strained my eyeballs on Special teams. Nada!

Batch is on Twitter giving play-by-play on Breaking Bad so he doesn't seem too upset. Perhaps he knows he'll be on the practice squad?

Why on earth sign him and them not play him? Not one single play in a game so far?

He saw a few special teams snaps early on, but that's it to my knowledge.

The N. Williams thing is a positive IMO. He wasn't going to help us this year and this way he can learn without going away.

Spence to the PUP doesn't mean anything more at this point than that the team isn't giving up on him. Good for him.

Cheadle and DVD are guys that I am like...whatever! They really didn't do anything here so no big loss.

    Batiste was horrible.
Farrell while a fine Big 10 player, wasn't NFL material IMO.
Gilreath's chances went down the toilet as soon as he had a BAD first game and Moye and Brown showed they were capable.
Tyler Shaw...who? Did he get ANY snaps in preseason? Again Moye and J. Brown kept him at bay.
Ryan Steed was only here due to injuries IMO.
Tuitupou never really had a shot and that was WITH Heath injured.
JPW was in his 5th Camp and could draw nothing more than MAYBE a draw with the rookie. Bye.
Jeremy Wright I think was only here due to the large number of injuries we had.

Now for the guys I am most surprised about, although not shocked.

Batch....I think this must have been at his request. Alvester beat him out? Really? I just don't see that. My guess is he was hoping to get picked up, but I doubt he is.

JD Woods....I don't think he was a stud or anything, but my guess is what you saw game #1 was not what they were seeing in practice. With Moye and J. Brown looking so good, I think he slipped down the chart.

Sylvester...I don't see how an ankle injury you will recover from takes you from 3rd ILB to cut in 2 weeks. I just don't see it. Yes, there were some other guys who looked good and can contribute on special teams, but Sylvester was a guy that we "thought" was going to be also see some time on the outside, that isn't happening either. It all surprises me.

AS far as JD Woods goes we have to remember that as fans we sometimes put a higher value on a player that they actually have. The rest of the NFL will be making 15 cuts in the next two days as well so I don't expect many teams to be scouring the wavier wire looking for gems especially when many will be trying to decide who goes and who stays. The college tape on Woods is out there as is the preseason footage, if coaches want a five or sixth receiver they know what he will bring its not like he was a high draft pick that dropped in the time leading up to the draft. He will be there if and when the team calls.

Looks like just a few teams went all the way down to 75 and the Steelers are one of them.

golic will be used in the last preseason game. they have to have some guys to finish out the last game. beachum and malecki may be pulled early in that one leaving whimper, long, golic, madsen, hubbard as the line.

ALL teams have to do this by Tuesday...some do it earlier than others. I could see a few guys like the ones in question by some (Batch, Sly, etc) were cut early to see if they might catch on elsewhere as a courtesy to them.

Just because another player is still there and wasnt cut...doesnt mean that player beat him out. Alvester has no chance of making it. A lot of times when players like Batch/Sly/etc are cut early it gives them a better chance to land elsewhere.

I think Woods will get picked up by another team before we get to put him on the PS, he made some fantastic clutch catches that moved his stock up, he will land on another team soon.....
