The rumor is that the Steelers are trying to work out a trade with the Patriots by sending Highsmith for WR Kayshon Boutte.

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith was absent from Day 2 of mandatory minicamp on June 3, 2026, due to an illness (specifically reported as a stomach bug). While team spokesman Burt Lauten officially confirmed the illness, his absence sparked immense trade speculation and contract drama coming immediately after the team's massive defensive roster move

Me nothing but speculation and rumors

The Contract Context & Trade Buzz
Highsmith's absence happened less than 24 hours after the Steelers signed backup edge rusher Nick Herbig to a massive four-year, $100 million contract extension ($42 million guaranteed).[1]
    • The Salary Imbalance: Highsmith is currently under contract through 2027 on a four-year, $68 million extension signed in 2023. Making an average annual value (AAV) of $17 million, Highsmith is now the third-highest-paid edge rusher on the roster behind T.J. Watt and Herbig ($25 million AAV), despite being a primary starter. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
    • Front Office Stance: Though analysts from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and other outlets have floated trade predictions—suggesting the Steelers may eventually capitalize on Highsmith’s high market value—insiders report that the front office currently has "zero" intention to trade Highsmith. New head coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham are planning to deploy a premier three-man rotation featuring Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig for the 2026 season

That better include a draft pick for us as well. Straight up that is not an even trade.

This would be a horrible trade IMO.

Boutte is a low end WR2 at best. Picking him up would steal snaps from Bernard, who we want to develop.

If we trade Highsmith, I'd much rather have draft picks. And if we can't get a 2nd +, I'd rather just keep him.

That's the first I've heard of the "locker room being cleaned out" part.

If this is all we got for Highsmith, it's a pretty big L for Omar IMO.

First thing I thought about. That trade would be equal to an obese dude on a seesaw and an anorexic girl stuck up in the air.

It's funny when they report this stuff because it lacks context. Once a team is eliminated from the playoffs they typically do a locker clean out and exit interviews so have these sources also noticed if anyone else has a sparse looking locker or that given the turnover on the roster and coaching staff that maybe players have switched lockers? Going to be really funny if they moved him to a different locker and some "insider" was quick to pull the trigger on the "jump to conclusions board.

All time locker room press conference if he brings in a broom and sweeps out his locker during the interview.

Could history repeat itself? Khan getting ready to trade away one the Steelers best players for a future mid round draft pick?

Last year Khan traded away the Steelers best WR in George Picks for a 3rd round pick to the Dallas Cowboys; could Khan make the same trade this year with Dallas for the Steelers best OLB in Alex Highsmith?

Last year George Pickens after the trade would go on to have the best year in his life making the NFL's All-Pro team, could Alex Highsmith do the same with Dallas this year?
