    Backyard Ben vs Erudite Aaron....

Rudolph emphasized that while Roethlisberger was a Hall of Fame player, the real leadership and on‑field guidance came from the Steelers’ veteran offensive line — David DeCastro, Ramon Foster, Maurkice Pouncey, and Alejandro Villanueva — who mentored him more directly. He also contrasted Roethlisberger’s approach with Rodgers’, praising Rodgers’ film study, blocking scheme understanding, and initiative in holding weekly meetings with receivers.

btw, this isn't a knock. It's a contrast in the way two players approached the game.

I've been harping on this for years. Also you add more games, and even games out of state, but You don't add size of actual roster is ridiculous.

One went to 3 SBs with two different HCs, and the other only to one.

The comments from Mason are probably at least a little bit of a knock too.

It sounds like Ben never had a good relationship with Mason (unlike other backups like Dobbs, Landry, Leftwich, Batch...).

Mason's a good journeyman backup type guy. I think he's been basically the forgotten man by everyone. And it sounds like he and Rodgers have a good relationship...and that AR gets along with Howard too.

My guess is that neither of the two young QBs on the team will be a long term starter. But I think it's good that they get to see how Rodgers works. Sounds like he's a "pros pro" or whatever.

I think Ben was a pro too (especially past the young-Ben stuff). But I also think that Ben just had abilities that even the other super-humans that play QB in the NFL don't have. So he needed less preparation than other QBs.

I've said this a million times, but not everyone is the same. I know guitar players who must have everything down to the minutiae detail, and work, and work at it, and others that all that does is over stimulate them, and make them too robotic, and gives them Analysis paralysis/Paralysis by analysis . I've seen this with musicians, different types of sports players, and fighters. We are not all the same, and different people work well differently.

Here are two headlines in the last two days:

"Steelers coaches are already impressed with Drew Allar just two weeks into his NFL career"

    Then....

I wonder how much of this has to do with changing his footwork and therefore having to learn to throw in new conditions

I dont even have to ask this question about Howard compared to Allar. Cant I just compare him to a guy like Justin Fields and say yes playing at Ohio State plays a huge part in college success but doesnt necessarily translate to the NFL

According to the internets machine, 17 QBs have been drafted into the NFL from PSU. The last 'successful' QB was Kerry Collins. 1995
Hopefully, the next will be Drew Allar.

Also according to the internets machine, 34 QBs have been drafted into the NFL from OSU. The last 'successful' QB is CJ Stroud. 2023
Hopefully, the next will be Will Howard.

All this talk about which college they played at is just noise. How many 'successful' QBs have come out of Miami of Ohio? LaTech? 7-SB appearances.

    Exactly.

All of Jeff Tedford's quarterbacks at Cal were failures at the NFL level. Then Aaron Rodgers came along. Judge each player on an individual basis.

Each individual player is a different story. Sure there are trends, but Howard wasn't a physical freak that ran around and found ways to dump the ball off to watch a player run the final 60 yards with it. Nor was he a guy that was running the ball because he had to run the ball to move the offense down the field.

I'm hoping that the lights went on for him, and that his processing speed and his ability to instantly memorize information and take that to the field works extremely well in McCarthy's system. It's a system that is all about getting the ball to the right spot based on coverage and what the quarterback and receivers see. I think Howard has a strong mental game. It gives him a chance to overcome the lack of some elite physical gifts if he can grasp the offense, read the defenses, process the information quickly, and distribute the ball. I don't know for sure that he will be able to do that. I am simply saying that the way this kid is built sounds like a good fit for Mike McCarthy's system and he has a chance to have a good career here.

Same for Allar. Allar is the most physically gifted quarterback to ever play at Penn St. Collins could flat out throw the ball, but he couldn't move very well. Most of the other Penn St. quarterbacks didn't have the talent to play at the NFL level in any capacity, so I'm not going to compare Allar to the other players that didn't have his level of talent.

Allar is a tough eval because of all the things we've talked about already. His coaching and offense has been suspect. He has made big mistakes in big moments. His footwork is atrocious, which affects his throwing mechanics. He has to learn a ton about playing the position at the NFL level.

On the other hand, he can literally do anything with his arm. His arm is elite and he is a very tough kid that can take a beating and he takes care of the football. Those are some pretty good traits to have in the NFL.

I am really hoping that Howard gets a chance to be the backup and that we get to see him get on the field in some capacity this regular season. This also gives him the chance to take at least some snaps in practice during the season, along with the mental reps that he does on his own and the side work with Rodgers explaining what he sees and how to react to it.

Allar needs to keep working. His mechanics can be improved, and if he shows he understands the material and can process information quickly in this system, he will have a chance to develop quickly and can be a good player.

I hope these two guys are good enough to be on the roster for the next decade. I know it's a lot to ask, but you never know. It is possible.

If trying out QBs with no experience loses games.... so what? We'll never know if Howard or Allar can play if they ride the bench.

Wilson, Rodgers, etc... had and have a low ceiling. Rehashing old QBs ain't gonna cut it.

No , You don't know if they can eventually play, but the coaches that coach them every minute of the day can.

That only gives them some insight but the proof is in the pudding and you dont find that out until you are actually out there playing in meaningful games.
