I don't get the hate on Mason. He is making peanuts, is a great team-mate and can play in a pinch.

Do I want him as a starter? No.

    Valued backup? Yes.

    i.e. Charlie Batch.

I don't hate Mason at all. But I wouldn't call him a valued backup either. Maybe serviceable? I swear the whole offense just feels slower when he's in there.

Charlie Batch was a much better backup IMO.

Just think, if the Chiefs had tanked a few years back they could have gotten this guy named Mahomes. Imagine how history would have been rewritten if Mahomes was a Chief! Oh wait….

With Rudolph I don't like or dislike the player. I think he loses credibility though with the contracts he signs. Before I speak about it, yes I would absolutely sign the same deal tomorrow. But I haven't spent my life training to do that job either and make nowhere near $1M per year.

MR signed his rookie extension for roughly 1yr/$5M. I don't think the Steelers have paid him much over $1M per season since that contract. Yet he keeps coming back rather than looking at FA for a bigger payday. I feel like that tells you his worth in the NFL.

Just for why I say this... The average salary for a backup QB ranges between $3M and $8M.

They either carry 4 or he is the odd man out. If hes out you just hope they can find a GM whos QB just had an injury or something that compels them to trade for him.

Its not hate for the player. Its just for many of us, we have seen enough of Mason to conclude he is not starter material. Having concluded that, why would you want to keep him around as the backup taking valuable reps away from the two young QBs?

The first statement isn't necessarily true. Cook looked okay at first, but seemed to get exposed more as time went on. There is no guarantee that Fautanu can make a successful switch to the left side. Did you see the Texans treat him like a turnstile in the playoff game?

Unless Dunker can be ready to start from day one, which is far from a sure thing as he makes the transition from tackle to guard, the Steelers have a couple of backup types as options to replace Seumalu at gured

He signed for $8 million for two years (https://www.nfl.com/news/mason-rudolph-returning-steelers-two-year-8-million-contract-aaron-rodgers.) His QB rating with the Steelers since 2023 is higher than Rodgers. Last year he played better than Rodgers against Cincinnati and was perhaps an illegal Formation, or a unnecessary holding penalty from beating the Bears at Chicago, which turned out to be a good team. QB's get hurt, you need a viable back up unless you punting season away for next year's draft pick. If I were to make a prediction, Mason isn't going anywhere as Rodgers has indicated he likes Mason in the QB room. https://www.google.com/search?q=aar...ate=ive&vld=cid:8ff80cc2,vid:L4RC1CqF8lM,st:0 . The other two young qb had average stats in college...even though Howard got hot during Championship run. I don't know of any QB in the nfl who suceeded in nfl despite having average stats in college. I know plenty that didn't succeed in nfl despite having stellar college career. The fact that they chose Allar this year despite having Howard tells me that they are not sold on Howard.

My point is Rudolph is playing on 3rd/4th string contracts.

Your point is wrong. 3rd or fourth string make league minimum. They don't make $4 million a year.

Steelers rarely trade up (or down) in the first round...only twice in the last 20 drafts. They are very conservative

Man, I'm hoping we bomb this season horribly. I don't think I can mentally handle another 10 win season where we get blown out in the playoffs with our ancient, washed QB

That ancient QB was pretty low on the list of reasons we got blown out in the playoffs. Like him or not, Rodgers has played the position better than any QB we've had since Ben. You have to protect him, you have to give him weapons and you have to play aggressive to-win football if you don't want to get embarrassed in the playoffs.

That would make Tomlin look good since he went 10-7 last 3 seasons.

Yeah, I don't know any owner that actually hates throwing in the towel, or HC that wants to start the season with no veteran backup, with their backups that have no actual NFL experience. I'm sure it's been done, but I can't remember it . I know Cowher wouldn't do it.

How many Teams start Qb that haven't taken a snap that are 3rd, and 6th round picks?? Remember my friend that Ben wasn't scheduled to play that early, and He was our 1st round pick. I think they can learn a lot during practice, and camp from Rodgers, and then there is always the chance that one , or more may have to play at sometime anyway.

Or they couldn't resist the dice roll on Allar. Or it tells us they are sold on Howard as a backup, with the idea of sending Rudolph on his way.

Rudolph played poorly against the Bears. He had a decent completion percentage because he kept throwing it short, as evidenced by his piss-poor yards per attempt in that game.

This new argument about the Bengals game from last year may be your worst one yet, which is saying something. Rodgers started the game and the Steelers built the lead with him in there. Rudolph got to play with a lead against a defense that prepared for Rodgers. That you don't know the difference explains a lot.

I agree on that, but all backups do this, that's why they are backups, and not starters.
Yet the unrealistic hate for Rudolph makes people think that if He doesn't play as an awesome starter as backup every game hes in, then he's not a good backup. Yet this is for some reason only for him, and not the other 40, and more backups in the NFL.
