That wasn't the same team as the previous season that went 12-4 with Burrow, but yelling "utter disaster" over and over seems like hyperbole.
At that point of the season, the Bengals were 8-6, and had won their previous 3 games. Two of those wins were vs Colts and Jaguars. (Both finished with winning records, so were meaningful wins.)

The Bengals only had 4 games all season where the opposing teams scored 30+ points.
No other team scored more than the Mason-led Steelers (34) all season.
If it was just a below-average QB "feasting" on a weak defense, then I would have expected the Mahomes-led Chiefs (who won the SB that season) to score more than 25 points vs. the Bengals.

Mason won't be good enough to put up massive stats to carry the team, but the offense as a whole seems to perform well with him. He can hold down the fort until Allar or Howard show they've fixed their fundamentals enough to take over.

You are holding Mason's 1-4 record in TEN against him.
No one was winning with that team. (Levis was 3-6 in 2023. Then with the offense organized for Levis, he went 2-10 the year Rudolph was on TEN.)
Two of the four losses were Buffalo (13-4) and Detroit (15-2), top 4 teams. Rodgers in his prime couldn't have lifted that Titans team over those two.

Sam Darnold went 13-25 with the Jets, 8-9 with Carolina, and 0-1 with SF.
He also went 14-3 with MIN and 14-3 with SEA.
Sometimes the team makes the difference.

For all the grumbling about the 2019 season, Mason did have a 5-3 record in his starts, despite the offense focused for Ben in the offseason.
Without Mason getting those 2 head blows, Duck probably doesn't see the field and Mason goes 10-4 as a starter (largely due to that top 5 defense).
Even with that one bad game at Cleveland skewing his stats, Mason was better at Duck for TD%, INT%, yards/game, and sack%.
He would still lose to the NFC champion 49ers in his first start, the away game at Cleveland (every QB craps the bed sometime), and probably both Ravens games. But the Bills and Jets game were winnable if the Duck-led offense scored more than 10 points in 6 quarters (which an uninjured Mason could do).

I like Rudolph. But unfortunately the reality is that he is a 0.500 backup QB. He won't elevate a team around him. He needs strong support. His biggest problem has never been corrected (I don't think it can be at this point). He doesn't sense pressure well, and he doesn't move well in a muddy pocket. Just not very strong against pressure. Nice guy though.

with mccarthy, mason could evolve. why not? if the young guys can evolve as far as many think why couldn't MM do the same with rudolph? he's not a bad QB but was behind ben and under tomlin.

Yeah, nice enough guy. Hasn't complained. But the one thing he used to do extremely well seems to have disappeared. The deep ball. He was a one trick pony who lost his trick. Even as a backup, Charlie Batch was much better in relief IMO.

The 2023 Bengals' defense gave up 374.6 yards per game. Only the Commanders were worse.

The Titans' lousy record when Rudolph started isn't the issue. it was his poor play, which eventually got them to put him back on the bench.

If you do want to use a quarterback's record as a measure of their performance, Kenny Pickett has a better career record than Mason Rudolph. 'Nuff said.

The comparison to Darnold doesn't hold up. He was saddled with a horrible situation with the Jets, then drastically improved his game when he had the opportunity to work with strong coaches in San Francisco, Minnesota, and Seattle. He was also a better prospect than Rudolph to begin with.

Exactly. Give Rudolph a clean pocket and he can make a few plays, but his pocket presence is awful. That is a difficult thing to fix. He is an easy guy to like, but nothing more than a middling backup.
