That is not correct. This from NFL website.

The time period for free agency signings in 2026:
    • Restricted Free Agents – March 11 to April 17.
    • Unrestricted Free Agents (who have received the April 29 tender from prior club) – March 11 to July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later).
    • Franchise Players – March 11 to the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season.
    • Transition Players – March 11 to July 22.
In the event that a player in this category [UFA] has not signed a player contract with a club by Wednesday, July 22, 2026 or the first scheduled day of the first 2026 NFL training camp, he may negotiate or sign a player contract from July 22 until the Tuesday following the 10th week of the regular season, at 4:00 p.m., New York time, only with his prior club, provided that by April 27 the prior club has extended such player an unrestricted free agent tender under Article 9, Section 1(b)(i) (the unrestricted free agent tender) of the CBA, as amended.

In the event the player has not signed a player contract with a club by Monday, April 27, 2026, and if his prior club has not extended the player unrestricted free agent tender or has withdrawn the tender, the player shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a player contract with any club without any penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, draft choice compensation between clubs or first refusal rights of any kind, or any signing period.

Just because you do not understand something or have not heard of it does not make it complicated. Two minutes reading any actual reporting on this clearly explains the mechanics of a CBA tool that I suspect most of us did not even know existed.

Look, I don't understand why we're going after a geriatric fossil like he's the final puzzle piece that will get the team over-the-top. We're no closer to fielding a SB roster than we were 365 days ago, so wtf are we doing here. At least test projects like Malik Willis or failed QBs like Anthony Richardson. The goal is to find the next franchise QB, not being an adult daycare for Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers, and the next fossil who'll swing our way. This nonsense is exactly why I hated the McCarthy hire. This is just more of the same and I'll just sleep in on Sunday mornings.

To me the McCarthy hiring, and Rodgers signing are just Art Rooney's desperate attempt to go out a Winner.

Art Rooney gave a interview where he said he was never going to retire, so we may never get the BIG RESET this team desperately needs.

Steelers' owner Art Rooney II says he doesn't intend to retire.
“My grandfather never retired. My father never retired. So I’m hoping to follow in their footsteps.”

I believe this exact thing was used a few times last year with other players in the NFL, and I believe the two I'm thinking of actually signed with another team, and then the team that put it on them got a compensation pick for them.

Rodgers is no final puzzle piece. He's probably the best placeholder until the next franchise QB is found. Doubtful Willis or any other failed QB is the answer, and they certainly wouldn't be any kind of mentor for Howard and Allar.

Perhaps Willis or any other failed QB is the answer, but they're at least swings. And considering that Aaron isn't the final puzzle piece either, then it's time for a legitimate rebuild. I'd much rather go 10-7 with a young roster that overachieved than 10-7 with this stagnant franchise. Sure it's the same result, but the former gives us hope that the franchise would continue to grow whilst the latter just feels like meh. As for mentoring Allar/Howard... ahhh Mason can easily mentor them. All placeholder QBs do is hold us back from taking legitimate swings. I'd rather swing and miss and move onto the next project than have fossils back there.

Richardson is terrible. He can't stay healthy. He pulled himself from a game because he was tired. No. Just no. I'm not even sure he would be worth picking up if he was cut and they got him for nothing.

Willis got a big paycheck and followed a coach he had played with in Green Bay.

The talk of the 49ers trading Mac Jones has died down. They don't have to move him at all.

The Steelers' options seem to be Rodgers or just go with Rudolph, Allar, and Howard.

I also don't buy your premise that they are no closer than they were 365 days ago. Despite a frustrating draft, they are better. I think they upgraded their coaching staff, the assistants if not the head coach. They are much better at receiver. They are better at running back. Brisker is an upgrade over what they had at safety. The offensive line might be weaker without Seumalu, but was he really all that good?

I'm not sure there is a huge difference, but the team around the quarterback is better.

I agree, just go with some combination of Rodgers, Rudolph, Allar, and Howard. McCarthy will get the most out of which QB starts. I hope Rodgers retires or signs somewhere else (giving us compensation) so they can properly evaluate Allar and Howard before next year's draft.

I remember that happening with Richardson last season. That was unbelievable. You definitely don't bring that kind culture killing plague into your locker room. Can you imagine the reaction of a TJ or Cam if the QB said they were tired and needed to take a break?

Willis got paid, but he has a lower ceiling, too short for the AFC North, and prefer a taller QB. There isn't a Free Agent QB out there that will make this team a contender, we need to move on to a cap friendly rookie QB.

I can buy into them being better than 365 days ago just, and that's before a single asset was added in June. Young pillars like Frazier, Troy, JPJ and Harmon should only get better and vets like Queen should be much improved and I doubt Watt is completely done just yet. With that said, I just don’t see this squad going into Buffalo, Denver, NE, KC or any other AFC team's house and winning. Granted any of those could be going into the playoffs with injuries and such so there's a lot of variables at play between now and January. And despite our additions and the draft, Vegas has us in the bottom half of the league in betting odds to win the SB. Tomlin's greatest strength was keeping the team together during tough times, can McCarthy be successful in this regard with this squad? Only time will tell.

Of course injuries can set the fate of a team for the season and no one can predict them, not even Vegas. Dallas had the No.1 scoring offense in 2023. Next season Dak gets IR'd and they drop to 21st in scoring.

Steelers were middle of the pack with injuries last season. Teams that overcame injuries in a big way in 2025 include SF, Detroit, and LAC. That's a sign of some good coaching.

Steelers did ok in FA this year plugging some holes. Add in the modest draft and on paper it's a better team. But of course no team stays the same as it was last year, so whether the Steelers have done enough remains to be seen. With an entirely new coaching staff it's tough to say how they will look but I'm excited to at least see something different from the team.

Good to know the real details.

Not shocking that most of the reporting on this was incorrect.

Most talking heads don't seem to know much about the CBA or the cap. Even people who are "plugged in" for leaks about stuff like who's signing with who or whatever.

Question: Are the Steelers now on the Hook for the full $15 million if Rodgers signs the Tag?

Just curious if something happens like the Saints call up and say they will trade us Derek Carr for a 6th round pick; would the Steelers still have to pay Aaron $15 million if he decided before July 22nd to sign the Tag.

Can the Steelers tell Aaron to "GO Kick Rocks" and not pay him his $15 million now that they have tagged him?

If he signs then yes the full 15 is guaranteed

Until he signs they can withdraw it

If he is offered a contract elsewhere the Steelers can match or get a compensation pick

    I think

Edit: The full 15 already counts against the cap

All I can say is this is interesting. Days after Bo Nix has a 2nd surgery on his ankle, the Pittsburgh Steelers put this UFA tender on Aaron Rodgers.

Where there is smoke there may be fire in regard to Aaron Rodgers taking calls from the Denver Broncos.

Like others I was surprised to see this. I thought they had a gentleman’s agreement with Rodgers and his signing was a formality.

Personally I’m not going to be heartbroken if he isn’t back. He is their best chance of being competitive in 2026 but their ceiling will still be similar to last year.

I hope he takes his drama show elsewhere, I don't want Rodgers back, never wanted him the 1st place. Perfectly happy with going with Rudolph and seeing Howard later. Save Allar for '27 with another draft pick - they took a lot of developmental draft picks right?

Then let them develop and let's get a top draft pick in '27, time this team accepted reality and took some lumps for a season.

How are we ever going to find out what Howard is if he doesn't play again this year?

If diva moves on it will also be a lesson to learn for the Steelers not to be held ransom by any player. No player is bigger than the Steelers, don't be a cuck team.

There's no reason for this dickhead not to have made a decision by now, what an absolute narcisscistic diva. Get f'd Rodgers.

    Why save Allar

If Allar is better than Howard why not learn now

They are both pretty much starting from the same position

    May the best man win

stack wins. i really don't care who the QB is. it will sort itself out. maybe we don't have our guy yet. we don't know. get on the practice field and find out. that's all they can do. a new offense for everyone. see who picks it up the best and move on.

Pay attention to the NFL dates; April 29th was a deadline for this transaction. Nothing to do with Nix.
