As I said in a previous thread don't be surprised if they take Allar. And i'm glad they did.

So I suppose now the Howard Fantasy has taken a hit?

If they believe in Howard why draft another QB? In the 3rd?

And the best thing is that it's what the cryboys gave them for Pickens!

The No. 1 question on everyone's mind is: Will Howard request a trade after the Steelers selected Allar, aka do a KP and run...?

‘The Beast’ breakdown
Allar ranked No. 106 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide:

“With rare size for a QB, Allar can drive the ball with ease and generally makes sound decisions, although issues pop up when he is late to pull the trigger. He tends to get overly conservative with his reads, which leads to second-guessing, and needs more reps to continue developing his passing instincts (didn’t start playing quarterback until high school). He is better than expected as a scrambler (81 first downs as a ball carrier over 35 career starts).

“Allar is a sturdy, strong-armed passer with promising intangibles, but underdeveloped timing disrupts his ability to execute at a high level. He has NFL starting-caliber physical tools, although a lack of natural passing rhythm creates uncertainty about his developmental ceiling.”

Nick Baumgardner grades the pick
Allar is absolutely intriguing as a 6-foot-5, 228-pounder with terrific arm talent and above-average mobility. He has every tool in the shed. He was never consistent with his feet or in big moments during his run at Penn State, though, making him a boom-or-bust prospect. I think Allar has a higher ceiling than Will Howard, a sixth-round pick of the Steelers last year. Grade: B

The Steelers’ third-round selection of Allar is notable for the quarterback’s traits: 6-foot-5, 228 pounds. New Steelers coach Mike McCarthy likes bigger QBs who can generally operate better in the cold and outdoor weather. He had Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, guys with big hands. Allar has large hands, measuring nearly 10 inches from thumb to pinkie with hand fanned out on a flat surface.

How he fits
McCarthy made his intentions known at the annual league meetings in Arizona when he said he wanted a quarterback with long arms and big hands “at the right time.” Turns out, the right time — after another one of the Steelers’ targets, Carson Beck, was drafted — was with the first of the Steelers’ three picks in the third round. While McCarthy said in Arizona that sometimes he gets more excited about a QB’s floor, Allar is the high-ceiling QB who has yet to reach his potential. The Steelers have now handed McCarthy a QB with unique tools who has yet to put it together. The Penn State product arrives with 6-5, 228-pound size and a nearly 10-inch hand that helps him drive the ball effortlessly. Depth-chart impact
Let the Will Howard versus Drew Allar competition begin. The Steelers have created a unique dynamic in their QB room with a pair of young former Big Ten passers. No matter whether Aaron Rodgers re-signs with the Steelers or not, Howard and Allar are now in a battle that will likely play out over multiple years. In the immediate future, that’s likely for the QB2 job. In the intermediate term, one of the two passers will try to prove that the Steelers do not, in fact, need to trade up to land a first-round QB in 2027. A number of guards were still on the board, including Emmanuel Pregnon and Gennings Dunker (they landed Dunker at the end of the night anyway). Fast evaluation
The Steelers found themselves looking for a new head coach, in part, because of their inability to identify, draft and develop a successor to Ben Roethlisberger. They hired McCarthy because of his resume working with Hall of Fame passers. Now, just months into the job, McCarthy is making a bet on himself. Allar has some of the best physical traits in this QB class. He has a lot to clean up, though. It’s the perfect canvas and measuring stick to evaluate the new head coach. — DeFabo

Too early to tell. True fact: I thought the 2008 draft was the best ever at the time. Steelers had only 1 player from that draft to contribute anything of worth: Mendenhall.

You heard it here first

I’ve been going to the draft for 20 years and will say I’ve been wrong before you certainly are not 100%. That being said I have never been so disappointed in our approach and process. A project tackle a WR well down the board in terms of prospects and a wasted QB pick in a guy who’s less accurate than you.

 

I was telling my uncle that this morning. I’ve really liked some of our drafts and the guys sucked. I’m no draft whisperer.

 

Sign someone else like every other team did, it's not that difficult. Now they're hedging Howard with Allar and neither of them is ready to start and Rudolph has long been exposed as a backup, who will never win you a big game. T

 

Like the Allar pick in the 3rd round, what did we get for last years 3rd round. Too much of an upside with his cannon arm and size. I watched many of his games and always hated how Penn St calls plays and their offensive strategy. Franklin and staff never really helped him. Hopefully he can be coached up some and becomes an NFL QB with the tools he has.

Agreed with others saying that we think we have the coaching staff to develop QB talent, unlike last few years when the QB's were on their own even during big Ben's time.

 

W now have 2 QB'S neither of whom are likely to be franchise QBs and neither of whom are ready to contibute either. The Steelers have had no plan at QB since BR retired. According to the team post MM hire, they were very high on Will Howard, everyone thought that was PR spin to deflect from a HC hire that very few people liked, and here we are that's been proven...and a valuable 3rd round pick spent.

You could see this pick coming a mile off after Thursday nights debacle. I hope Drew Allar is the answer is all I can say. At least he has some tools unlike tiny hands cry baby.

 

It doesn’t matter how strong your arm is when you throw it to the wrong team or in the ground. He’s a bum and it’s a wasted pick.

 

Added to that is the fact that Allen wasn't much better than scrub and progressed his first couple of years until he broke out year three.

 

We shall see in a couple of years, you can't teach arm strength, size, but you can teach footwork, and playing smart.

As I have said....Tomlin never held the power that the media liked to say he did. They will say nothing about this and pretend that they never said it.

9-7 is a guarantee this year.

 

In all seriousness... this is probably the correct take.

Drew Allar has size, has an arm, is a really really good athlete. He's also a pretty smart guy. Some will point to his failures in the clutch at PSU, however, how much of that was on Franklin? Franklin was known to be a failure long before Allar was there.

If McCarthy is as good of a QB guru as the experts around the NFL say he is, this could be a good move for the Steelers.

If it fails, who cares. It's a 3rd round pick and probably a worthy gamble.
