jones probably won't be one much longer. they can't just cut him or do an injury buyout until he's back or cleared to be back. if i'm not mistaken. he is under contract right now and still considered IR i believe.

we have cook and fautanu on the left, driscoll and iheanachor on the right with anderson able to play any position at this point. fautanu has been on the right until now. i'm sure some UDFA linemen will be brought in to camp for the preseason.

the thing that doesn't come into play yet is cook is only signed for this year. if he is indeed the starter and plays well the price may go a lot higher. then we will have the 5th year option on fautanu coming due. again the price will go up. i think this was a calculated move by kahn for a few reasons.

The fact that there was a run on OTs in Rd1 should surprise NO ONE. I mean, if you paid attention to any games last season besides the Steelers you would have noticed that at least a half dozen teams were in desperate need of OT help. Teams were going through them like water last year.

I usually don't dig modern comedy TV shows.... but Schitt's Creek is great.

Iheanachor is a right tackle, but he is better in pass protection than run blocking, which isn't ideal. I know he has better upside, but he sounds way too much like Okorafor.

We still have UDFA Dylan Cook. He may be the best OT we have.

I'm not excited about the pick but I am excited about the position. What if this guy excels at RT for us? Not sure why so many are down on this guy before we even get to TC. That's when we'll really get to see what we have.

Well, it's not as if an official designation L or R matters because the Steelers will be playing music chairs with them anyway.

You can't be picking 21, with 12 picks and end up with a developmental player, you just can't. Especially as recent record in the 1st round has been poor.

He'd have to be "Ogden good." Listening to Joey Porter talk about his first encounter as a rookie with Jonathan Ogden on a Podcast was freakin' hilarious. Said he got pancaked and the wind knocked out of him. Thought Ogden was too big to be fast and quick... and thought he could run around him. :lolol:

This is a good point that cannot be stated enough.

High-level LTs do not get to FA. Sometimes, but rarely, they do get traded for significant capital in return (Trent Williams and Laremy Tunsil are only ones that come to mind for me though).

Because we already have a starting RT.

I don't see Max making the starting lineup this year.

I have high hopes for Max! I think he will make the grade. Remember Big Al, away from football for 4–5 years after graduating from the Military Academy in 2010 and going on active duty (including Afghanistan). He didn’t seriously return to football until around 2014. When Tomlin picked him up, most fans called him camp fodder…until he wasn’t.

I think the assumption here is that Fautanu would move to left tackle. He might even move to guard. There was talk of that happening when he was drafted.

I dont know how I am seeing posts saying the more you hear about this guy the less you like the pick. Really???

It’s getting better and better for me. This is pre draft so it’s not coping or shinning a pick after it happened.

This reminds me of the Edmunds discussion. Every Steelers fan rushed to freak out and post "REACH" on the internet. Various draft "experts" got on TV and Twitter and wanted to get their "REACH" post out there. Then actual information and reporting came out and it was revealed that like half the NFL had the kid shooting up their rankings and he was going to go in the first round at some point.

Oh....MojoUW......Edmunds stunk! He was a terrible pick! That may be true. That is a scouting failure. Doesn't change the fact that the Steelers accurately gauged where they needed to select Edmunds if they wanted to draft him versus how other teams valued him as well. Turns out the scouting was wrong.

We don't know the scouting accuracy on Max, but in the sober light of day, it certainly looks like if the Steelers didn't take him at #21, he wasn't going to make it many more picks.

We had 2 LTs. Put one at RT. Now we have a LT and RT. I'm gonna let MM do what he does and if it fails, THEN I'll complain.

I think the interesting thing here is the number of possibilities.

Max has played RT but his athleticism and being better at pass pro indicates the left side.
Fautanu has been rumoured since he was drafted to be both tackle positions or guard.
Cook supposedly can play both sides.
    Brod has played both sides.
Driscoll's wikipedia says "primary backup tackle and guard.
Hoffman has played C and RG in the NFL.
    Anderson played C, G, T in college.

I would like to see them decide at some point in TC if Max is destined for the left or the right side. Then work with him until he's ready to take over. I assume that Fautanu will be expected to play the other side, but until he's ready to play you have Cook. If Jones is ready to play then let him play, but unless he finally has figured it out, you just play him assuming he's not returning so you don't let his limitations dictate the plans for your future starting tackles like they did for Dan Moore.
