Allar might be a nice back up... I don't see him succeeding as a starter.

I've seen enough PSU games to know he beats up on bad teams, but rarely takes a game over and beats the really good teams...he starts hearing the foot steps when the pressure is on. He isn't very mobile either. Might be a slightly better version of Mason Rudolph.

    :hmm:

Still trying to figure out where the Mason Rudolph comps are coming from. For one, Mason wasn't half the athlete Drew was coming out. For two, Mason doesn't have nearly as quick nor as compact of a release as Allar. Most of all, for three, Allar possesses something Mason never did; overall arm talent. Throwing power, arm angles or even the ability to drive throws on or off platform, Allar does have the baseline traits that seperate him from being merely a JAG to someone who is worth rolling the dice on.

That said, he needs to go to a situation where he can redshirt and most importantly, get his confidence back. Dude's confidence was shot after his injury. Thankfully, he is still very young; only 22 years of age. His combination of youth, experience, traits, tools and very high ceiling are very much worth taking a risk.

For me, it is between him and Carson Beck. Either or would be fine but I have been, since 2024, a huge fan of Drew Allar.

Beano Cook pointed out all fans ever do is root for laundry. He said if Pitt and Penn State's football teams changed uniforms at halftime, Pitt fans would still be rooting for those in the blue and gold in the second half.

Which is where my comment came from. If we can draft a QB that will help get us to #7, I really don't care what his name is.

Mason is a bad comp. I think better comps are Joey Harrington, Joe Flacco, Jared Goff types. Bigger guys with big arms that can move well enough to move in the pocket, but not well enough to be a threat in space if they take off and run. I think Flacco is the perfect comp, and very close to the caliber of player we will get “if the stars align” for Allar.

The only thing I can’t reconcile is the fact that people say he could be “special” if things turn out… like he could be the next Josh Allen or something. Allen is special because he can run and beat you with his legs at any moment, be a massive threat in the red zone with his power running, and he’s a top 5 passer in the league. Thats not Allar and it never will be. I still think he could be Flacco or Prescott level good if he develops well, but I also think he’s a much larger project than some give him credit for too. Most of the things modern offenses value (short and intermediate accuracy, timing, decision making) he’s poor at.

I will say though, if it was between Allar and Beck then I am very glad we took Allar. Polar opposite players. Allar is a likely dud, but has a good enough ceiling that he was worth a mid pick. Beck is an unlikely dud, but too low of a ceiling to get excited about. At least Allar doesn’t have the propensity to throw teammates/coaches under the bus and lack accountability. I would’ve been highly disappointed putting capital into Carson Beck.
