What are Reasonable Expectations for Mike McCarthy in year one with the Steelers?

gotcha so making the playoffs and losing is good. Losing in the divisional round is bad. Losing in the AFC title game is bad. Losing in the SB is good. Makes sense. Thanks you make solid points here hard to refute any of that.

Here let's dumb it down for you. Every team in the NFL has made the playoffs. Not every team has made a SB. Hope that helps.
You get on to Tomlin for making two SBs with a Qb he didn't draft, and yet McCarthy had two HOF Qbs he didn't draft, and he still only made one SB. LoL.

 

McCarthy was not my first pick by a long shot but I’m excited there is at least a change from the mediocre standard of MT. McCarthys resume deserves some fair criticism.

 

I would love for Steelers to MAKE the AFC Championship game like we used to on a regular basis. We can't even win a playoff game.

By the standards outlined here and the majority of the rest of the Steelers focused internet, MM is mediocre.

He’s not that bad and not that great.

He’s being talked about like he’s a coaching guru. Nothing in his extensive track record supports that.

I was hoping the Steelers would hire someone younger. I am not thrilled with McCarthy. I am not thrilled with the DC selection either.

 

We're not the Jets or Raiders just stuck without a franchise QB, they're building up the rest of the team for when they find their franchise QB .

 

But people are trying to label McCarthy a failure before he has been able to even make it to the draft so the organization can acquire the new talent for the team. The guy hasn't even gotten his roster, installed an offense and defense, and has gotten a single player on the field to evaluate the talent already on the roster and set up the direction of the team, yet people are already claiming he will be a colossal failure.

That just doesn't make any sense.

 

McCarthy or the DC wasn't my favorite choices, but the DC was with two terrible teams in the Giants and Raiders. Let's see what the DC can do with the talent the Steelers have on defense.

 

A bit bizzaro. Guy was consistently winning 70% of their games until Jerrah decided to meddle with the roster. He's a high ceiling HC with maybe a lower floor than MT.

 

The thing with me is that I'm not about to label McCarthy a huge success either. We simply haven't seen anything from him yet. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt either way.

Once we start seeing how things are going on the field, we will get a better idea how to assess the direction of the team. I am going to give him at least one full season and then see the difference in performance in his second year before I can give a true evaluation of how well or how bad things are going. When you then add in most likely playing a young quarterback and all the patience that it requires, I'm going to try not to overreact and give McCarthy time.

 

And how do they know they are going to find their franchise quarterback

Who is saying McCarthy is a failure? I’ve seen people question the hiring but why would anyone say it’s a failure he hasn’t coached 1 game. Our last HC got a decade without a playoff win I think big Mike got some time here.
