You would expect so. This was a classic Arthur Smith misuse of personnel, one of the big complaints about him in Atlanta.

Steelers didnt give Muth that contract to not be involved and with less focus on jumbo packages under MM, he should see plenty of action.

    Both guys should be featured!

For passing downs that is 'Muth

For running downs that is Washington.

Both play in the 2 TE sets.

Trust Mike McCarthy to pick the best men based situational football. Mike McCarthy is far better than Art Smith on play calling. Smith was merely competent. Mike is good to very good.

Washington will still be involved but it is only natural with the addition of Pittman and MM running a west coast offense that Washingtons snaps will take a hit. There is no argument that Muth is a better receiving TE than Washington.

He should receive less targets in the pass. This is true. But the man is huge and a big time player in the pass catching department inside the 10 yard line!

Here is the #1 TE and likely a primary or secondary target. A tough cover he is. Too tall for all DB's and most LB's inside the 10.

Agreed, but they can't just take Washington out every time there is a passing situation. That makes it too easy for the defense.

Washington is a mismatch for any defense and should be
used in red zone at all cost.

I don’t have anything sound to base my optimism on but I’m hoping Washington can improve in the receiving department

He could be a heck of a weapon

Are you suggesting playing two tight end sets more often

Or are you suggesting playing Muth on passing downs and Washington on running downs

I’m trying to figure out if this is a bad idea or a ridiculous idea

This is why I think we should trade Muth. I just think that Washington is more of a mismatch / threat. And we're almost certainly going to extend him (I hope). And we might be able to buy low here becuase we've been running such a ****-show of an offense.

It made sense to have 2x TEs you could start in an Arthur Smith offense.

We'll have fewer snaps for TE2 this year.

The "good news" here is that although we won't be running 2x TE2s with Muth and J Smith.

But I don't think we'll trade either one of them. Muth's contract still has 3 years left, so I wouldn't give him away for nothing. He's an average TE1 and a good TE2 (using him our TE3 - most used TE3 in the league certainly - last year was really stupid).

If that's the case, hopefully we don't draft one before day 3 and again have this 3 TE problem.

Misleading headline. "but we really won't know until we get to camp and see what their plans are" sums this story up better. It's funny that the article mentions Jonnu Smith, but doesn't come around to that being where PF's additional snaps will likely come from. Unless the team goes TE early, you'll have plenty opportunities to get two TE weapons involved, and showcase Freiermuth more than Smith did.

PF should definitely be used more. Hes a better route runner. Would like to see him used on seam routes more.

Red zone Washington would be very useful for blocking on running plays and passes in or near the end zone. Hopeful MM and his staff can get more out of these guys than Tomlin/AS did. PF should be a pro bowler.

No, I am not saying we should play 2 TE more often. There is a time to play 2 TE's though.

I am saying on passing downs we should play 'Muth more, and on running downs we should play Washington more.

It would be nice to have a guy who excels at both for playing calling purposes and to disguise out play calling , but few men in the NFL do at TE.

I am not here to educate you. Let me know if you still need help fighting it out.

The fact that no one wants to play PF on running downs is saying a great deal.

Signing PF to a big $$$ extension was, so far, a big mistake. He doesn't provide enough juice in the passing game to make up for his total non-participation in the run game. You have to be a pretty special TE to get away with that. PF is decent, but not special.

Everyone just likes him because he went to Penn State and Old Ben made him look good his rookie year.

Think about the fact that the Steelers, under an OC who LOVES TEs, preferred to have Ben Skowronek holding the edge in the running game over PF.

Washington played a lot as an extra OL he got to block speed rushers and power rushers ..He blocked DE types and DT types he showed no problems with either .. The point is even if the Team doesn't intend to move him he will not come cheap.. He has enough on tape to command TE mismatch, great run blocker, possible OL money..

1 thing the tape shows for sure is if he was moved to OL he would be the best run blocker the Team currently has by a good ways .

Who is saying that they don't want to play Freiermuth on running downs? Some dudes on a message board?

We really won't know what Muth can do until we see him actually used in a real offensive system that values tight ends for more than simple dump offs to Washington. This is the type of stuff that will play itself out over time.

Muth looked good with Ben as a young player. He got open, made the catches, and scored touchdowns. It's what he has done his entire career until Ben was no longer here and the offense was run by an imbecile. Even last season, Muth would get almost no touches until they needed someone to make plays at the end of games. He would then be open and make the plays that seemingly nobody else on the roster was able to make consistently when the team needed it the most. Because he can consistently make those plays in the most important moments of games, he should be on the field more and used more...period.

If they don't like his contract or McCarthy doesn't like his fit with the team, they likely trade him and we find out what he can do on another team. I think saying that Muth isn't really any good is giving way too much credit to the way the team has been operating the last 4-5 seasons and the way some talent has been used.
