It's about Tomlin and the direction we have been heading in the sense that it was stale and broken - that is / was my only point. MM is at LEAST an offense minded coach. Can he and Khan cook up something different? We will see.

Tomlin had NO CLUE what to do on offense. Arthur Smith? ARTHUR SMITH?

He just thanked GOD for years that he has Ben.

I HOPE MM gets some $$$$ and some GREAT Coordinators and Assistants.....

I was so frustrated watching a number of playoff games this year where the team that lost would have easily won had they taken the FG points instead of going for it on 4th. I'm fine with going for it in certain situations, but at least 3 or 4 teams lost a playoff game this year that would have been a win had they kicked for 3 once or twice instead of going 4 and out.

The Seahawks paid for Sam Darnold who scores points and got lucky on JSN. Needed all of 31 points to make it to SB. AFC was weak with a hurt KC team. Burrow out for 2 months and lamar hurt. So yes a defense coach represents the AFC but QB had an awesome year and yesterday snow ruined any chance of a real game and bo nix out helped too. Were we supposed to be happy going 10-7 or 9-8 and getting curb-stomped every playoff game under tomlin forever. Sound like he my have some issues going on anyway. We only had one way to beat descent teams. Get 4 turnovers. Offense has been unwatchable since big ben elbow injury.

Im not saying your premise is wrong but you are obviously trying to still stick up for MT saying defensive HCs still win championships. You are right they can but MT certainly couldn’t anymore.

The Sean Payton gaffe yesterday by not kicking a FG when they were on the 14 yard line was mind boggling. He had a QB who hadn't played in over 2 years and could have had a 10 point lead. Instead he goes for it on fourth down and misses in a game they lost by 3.

All defense is probably never going to win, and all offense probably won't either. You have to have a mix. The Steelers have been throwing more and more money at the defense until we are the highest paid defense by 25 million over the next closest in 2025. Moneywise, we spend almost 60% of our 2025 budget on the defense. We have been focusing more and more on the defense. It was only 2025 when we paid a bit of attention to the offense by bringing in Rodgers, but we hamstrung him with a lack of offense elsewhere, namely the receivers and a poor run game.

I don't advocate for a reversal into an all offense version of the Steelers, but it would be nice to have a balanced team. Boswell should be putting up points to further our lead rather than making big kicks to keep us close.

    IMO

I mean, there's like a 99.9% chance the Broncos would have beaten the Patriots had Nix not broken his leg, which would have likely meant one offensive minded coach. Combined with being blessed with the easiest schedule of any team to reach the SB since the mid 70s, the Patriots even being in there at all is pretty much a fluke - which makes it kinda hard to argue that their defense-oriented HC is the reason that they got to where they are, to be fair.

This is exactly it. Balanced team, complementary football.

It probably doesn’t matter all that much whether your HC was a DC or an OC once you have good players and good coaching on both sides of the ball.

Defence is still hugely important, but you need a QB and an offence on the other side. Unless you’re Kyle Shanahan who can go to two Super bowls with Jimmy G

Re the two teams, the Pats might be the luckiest team in a long time to get to the SB. Getting to the Super Bowl is never easy, but they’ve had a cupcake run in relative terms, facing the easiest regular season schedule, and then a backup QB in the snow in the AFC Championship Game. If Nix plays yesterday they’re going home, almost no doubt.

Seahawks look like the much stronger overall team and I expect them to win without too much fuss in two weeks time. But the Pats have a shot

The only thing funnier would be Shedeur Sanders being named to the Pro Bowl.

I think we’re kind of saying the same thing. If you have a Defensive minded HC he better have a darn good OC and vice versa if you have an Offensive minded Head Coach. Non of it matters much if you don’t have the QB.

it’s the biggest reason I wanted to move on from Tomlin. We need to find a franchise QB. Having someone more offensive minded gives me hope in that area.

It was unbelievably stupid. I really hate the Patriots, so I was yelling at Payton on the TV like a lunatic when I saw the offense stay in the field.

Art Rooney one of the most stubborn owners in football just ended a winning business model to hire an offensive minded HC. Even he knew they had to do something different!

Especially with the way the NE offense looked early on. That was just a terrible decision.

Shadeur does have a victory over Mike Tomlin's defense to put on that resume.

    The standard is the standard.

I need to admit it was not a good decision this time in a low scoring game...I don't think it was why they lost since the fumble at the end of the first half help the pats big time to score a TD but to not kick the FG in a low scoring game did not help too....It was not a 30-27 type game

I don’t mind going for an offensive minded HC but with McCarthy we essentially hired Mike Tomlin 2.0. 10 wins will be the ceiling next season.

I don't like the offensive guru type HCs because it seems like they like to smell their own farts / read their own press clippings too much.

Why are you still on about Tomlin? The OP is about the teams playing in the SB. More specifically the HCs coaching. Rock on robot.

But if Payton kicked the FG maybe they get the game to OT instead of losing by 3 points.
