I think I am calm enough to grade it with some detachment. High C?

As I stated in the other 6-7 MikeMc threads the organisation did a great thing in the hire and preparing for the draft. It is just that simple.
    BRAVO

AR II complaint thread is open
    Omar complaint thread is open
Mike Mc complaint thread is open

    ALL SHOULD BE PINNED

so when they bring in staff or during draft, not honing craft you can

    B&C away

    D

The only reason it’s not an F is because maybe he can help develop a QB and is an offensive mind.

We had a chance to reset and Art thinks we can try to make a run with MT 2.0. Looks like we all know who the real problem around here is now. Omar let it happen also he’s next to be gone.

What a great way to put it LMAO I think grief is going to stick with me for a while on this one.. potentially throughout his tenure as HC... I think the coordinator hires will say a lot about our feelings on it too though

I voted D. Though, its more of a D+ to me. I dislike it more for reasons outside of McCarthy's control. The hiring just signals that ownership just isn't serious about keeping up with the fast moving schematic revolution in the league. It's a young man's game with schematic superstars, and we're over here hiring retirement age guys. McCarthy is a decent enough coach... He just isn't what this organization desperately needed.

I was torn between D and F, but gave him a D. I really see no upside here.

I gave it a B. Hiring a new HC means it's a package deal as MM is only one of the new coaches coming in. After he acquires his staff, this could change dramatically as an improvement. Seems MT was going through coordinators all the time especially on Offense. Player development, in game management and tactics, and game prep all will change. The question is in what direction? I am anticipating for the better and soon we'll get a clearer picture of what lies ahead. JMO>

The pick is growing on me, so I gave a solid B. I like that he’s a Pittsburgh guy, an experienced offensive minded coach and he should be able to help with the draft tremendously.

I’m not sure he’s a strong leader of men, but what do I know. Hopefully he’ll be better than Tomlin in hiring strong coordinators

Incomplete until we see his staff.

The one big negative that I keep circling back to is his playoff history. He had that one year where they went 4-0 in the postseason culminating with beating us in our last SB appearance (a long time ago). Other than that his teams’ postseason performances have tended to underachieve regular season success in those same years. That’s at least a yellow flag, and more likely a red one.

Thats the big let down for me. After 19 years of Tomlin I just wanted a complete change of direction and to tap into the new young and innovating coaching of the McVays and Shannahnas of the league.

But, if you believe McCarthy, he spent his year away from the league revamping his coaching and studying league trends. So it’s possible he comes back an even better coach.

It's C- for him as a coach and and the rest is all on Rooney and the brain trust circle jerk who valued "comfort and familiarity" and the self-deusion of contending (despite year after year of failing to come close to that) over a rebuild and the future of the Steelers, they have also broken a tradition that brought us 6 rings and set us apart, now we've fallen in with everyone else, all thanks to Art Clowney and fool's he surrounded himself with.

And by the way, I now have no patience for any of this now, as I would have done for tear-down and rebuild with the next HC in the Steeler mould to pick up the mantle of the three legends that went before.

They've told me and the rest of Steelers nation that we are wrong, so i'm expecting 12-5, division titles and playoff wins right off the bat, nothing else will do, results now, that's what they have told us, ready tio win right now, so patience whatsoever with this regime whatsoever now, they have to get it right immediately.

And MM who have no ill will towards, he's just the wrong guy, will be last in line for any blame from me.

Responsility lies with Art Rooney, Khan and Weidl - and MM a distant fourth

So come on then, we're contenders and we're winning playoff games next season. I can't wait!

McCarthy might be a good interim coach to revamp the Steelers offense and develop the next QB. He improved Dak Prescott, who is a mediocre playoff choker. I have concerns that McCarthy had work ethic issues at his previous stops.

My grade entirely reflects the hiring process and my opinion of Rooney and Khan. This search was more about comfort and laziness, and overrating this roster.

It is an F Minus hire.

But with this signing I now at least get to enjoy watching so many of you having mental breakdowns and spewing hatred and babble and misinformation

Definitely worth the price of admission

I want to give it an incomplete, until I see who the Coordinators are.

I think McCarthy's hiring means Art is not looking for the future, but hopes to see Pittsburgh win another Playoff game before he retires.

Rooney has already told us we're winning plyoff games next season, MM is the missing piece, he must be. Everything else is in place according to Art.

I can't wait for next season, we're gonna be smoking teams, not squeaking by with a FG after getting six Turnovers...

    I gave it a C.

But it's probably a B because there's no downside risk. And while it's not exciting, it's certainly possible that he's a better option than the young guys who haven't done anything.

I was just hoping that there would be some change and the potential for at least a soft rebuild.

How this is graded depends entirely on what you think the objective of the hiring was.

When looked at it in terms of what is pretty clearly the mission statement of the team (don't play meaningless regular season games), it's probably an A. But I think we all wanted the prospect of improvement. Instead of just the Groundhog Day experience for another few years.

There is though, there's opportunity cost, wasted seasons, just like the seasons we've already wasted.

You've actually described pefectly in your post what the downside risk is.

I think the thing is that it really depends on perspective / objective.

As a fan who's lives through this treading water (who also grew up near a bunch of Bills fans in the space between Kelly and Allen), I'm not excited about the prospect of continuing to finish with 9-11 wins and getting blown out the in the playoffs.

But if the team was my main (only?) source of income (like ARII), I'd probably lean more toward risk minimization.

McCarthy is the risk minimization pick. Not surprising coming from a team who's been all about risk minimization...well probably since Cowher was hired.

I do think it would be interesting to see what would happen if Tomlin was put in an organization with a win now type philosophy. I do think he's been molded into a risk minimization machine throughout his career. But it would be interesting to see if having different incentives would change how he coaches. My guess is that we never get the chance though.
