Just because it was done in the past, it doesn't guarantee future success.

Maybe Shula would have been in over his head and gotten fired after a few years.

Tomlin and Cowher still had to win to stick around. Maybe Art didn't think the young guys out there were the next Cowher or Tomlin.

Maybe McCarthy gives us 5 good years, gets the offense on track with a future QB and then we hand it off to some young Coach?

well the first guy won 4 in 6 years. The next 2 that you claim were so great because of how the Steelers do it, won 2 and lost 2 in 34 years. Not to mention we haven't been close in a long time. How good has this method really been?

That's not a particularly compelling argument when you consider it's been only two over the past 45 years.

To be fair – for all we know, Shula and Scheelhaus and others may have privately communicated to ARII that they have since ruled out wanting the HC gig in Pittsburgh. If so, this revelation could have conceivably forced ownership into a bit of a panic mode - this, in turn, may have made them feel compelled to take the option who was seemed to be the most interested and excited about being here, while at the same time being an option with proper experience in developing QBs.

I'm not suggesting that any of these things necessarily make McCarthy the most talented coach in the pool, rather, he may have simply been, for all we know, the only remaining option that organization deemed to be viable enough to run things - at least for now.

Regardless, if Shula and his ilk did privately reject the job offer, it would definitely explain the suddenness of the McCarthy hire – why would they wait around for nothing? And hiring the likes of Flores, with all of his baggage, was never realistically going to be hired, imo. McCarthy will ultimately be a stopgap – maybe not a good one, but on the other hand, it could be good for our drafting prospects.

It's ridiculous to see Art accepting mediocrity like that, or to think they are close because they are in the playoffs (even if it's always a weak playoff team that everyone wants to play against) year after year
