    Just wondering what people think.
How many Qbs coming out this year would you definitely say is better than Will Howard??
Not that is faster, or has a stronger arm, but is definitely a better Qb.
I'm curious at people's thoughts on that.

Moore, Mendoza and Simpson are the obvious names. But guys like Mateer and Beck seem to be on par with Howard, even if they get drafted a few rounds higher than where Howard got drafted.

    You think Simpson??
    Hmm.
I guess with a lack of Qbs he may go high.

Simpson wouldn't have declared if he got lower than a 1st Rd grade. That doesn't mean he'll end up being better than Howard, but he definitely has a higher ceiling.

I was WAY off on this QB class this year. Almost makes it pointless to project pre season.

As much as I'm not a fan of having an aging QB I don't know what the Steelers will do if he calls it quits.

Steelers will never start 2026 campaign with Mason as starter. Howard would be like any other rookie we'd put in. Sign another past prime QB????

Isn't this just another way of asking how good one thinks Will Howard is?

Personally, I do not think he is very good. He has no single stand out trait that he can build his game around.

He has a "meh" arm. He has decent mobility. He made a read or two and then deposited the ball to one of the staggering array of freakishly talented playmakers at OSU.

I think Howard is bouyed by the large gap in talent between OSU and almost everyone else they played.

I don't think it matters because I don't see the Steelers making Howard their starting QB in 2026.

I would strengthen the O-line in the draft and purchase Malik Willis and let him and Howard battle it out. I think Rodgers will retire after this year and I wouldn’t draft a QB with this class. Look at it this way if Willis and Howard don’t work out we will have a higher draft slot in 2027.

If Rodgers comes back Howard wont play.

They went out of their way to keep a 6th rd pick, I think they intend to give him a shot at starting eventually, if not next season the season after that.

To answer the OPs question, I think Howard is as good as anyone in this class. He has the arm strength to make all the throws, has a great deep ball, he’s tailor made for the Steelers short passing game that emphasizes yards after the catch and he gets high marks for pre snap reads but gets bad grades for recognizing post snap adjustments. Hopefully a year sitting behind Rodgers has helped him in that area. He also is athletic enough to hurt you with his legs.

Some other areas he scores poorly is his accuracy is inconsistent and it’s said he needs to clean up his mechanics which of course is what leads to the accuracy issues.

I think it all hinges on what Rodgers wants to do, I doubt the Steelers would tell him no if he wants to return.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but wasn't Howard outplayed by Skylar Thompson this offseason?

Before the hand injury to Howard, I was one of the many who thought the Steelers were going to keep Thompson on the active 53 man roster and cut Will Howard; so they could sign him to the practice squad. Howards immediately went to IR, so they never really had to make a hard decision.

Carson Beck has improved his draft status with Miami's run into the final four. A win tonight and a good showing in the Championship game will put him into the late first round.

Don’t think we’re going to waste a bunch of draft picks to trade up for a Fernando Mendoza or a Dante Moore. Ty Simpsons also entered the fray but I’m still not seeing it. This is yet another year where (maybe) we just accept there aren’t many good QBs in the draft.

I’d be willing to possibly ride out another year with A-Rod while ultimately giving Howard a shot at some point.

Anyone got a read on Simpson and the ceiling on his athletic traits?

I'm trying to find somewhere that will bottom line that but all I can find are things talking about how few starts he has.

Athletically is Simpson a higher or lower ceiling than Howard?

Naturally nothing is definite but last year 6-7 quarterbacks were drafted before Howard so I’ll go with 6-7

the crop seems marginal, at best

we can't develop a QB here - unless we get a YOUNG BUCK OC that is a genius.

    Tomlin would never allow it.....

Howard did not play a single snap in preseason last year

He was injured in early August

He was not outplayed by anyone

Different entirely. Simpson has a smaller frame and is not an amazing athlete (though, not a terrible one either). His arm would be above average for the NFL. What would have teams intrigued by him is that he seems to possess the ability to run an offense. Pre snap processing is his biggest strength. He's also considered mobile enough, to have high pocket awareness, and get through progressions beyond his experience level. His downfalls being that he has a small sample size and his tape can be a bit inconsistent (having really great stretches, but stinking pretty hard when its bad). Most of the comparisons for him say he is like Mac Jones with a better arm and a better athlete, or Tony Romo.

I would think his ceiling is relatively high. If a QB is mobile enough, can read defenses pre and post snap, and has an NFL arm... you would think they would be at least a solid NFL QB.

Considering I already have Will Howard wearing the gold jacket with a bust in Canton, I would say no more than 3 or 4. ;):hehehe:

No. If I recall correctly, they were running him over Thompson the entire time in camp. Thompson got some buzz late in the process as a potential QB3 roster keep over Howard because he played really well in the preseason games and Howard didn't get to play due to injury. The team opted to keep Howard anyways (meaning they always viewed him as a better player, or at least a player with a higher ceiling in the league).

Not surprising. Would've gone back to school if this wasn't the case. Someone will take him in the first. He could potentially even go top 10 (considering where QB needy teams are and the overall lack of talent in the draft at QB).
