i believe being the #1 defense can make a 4-3 guy rethink his stance on that though. they have run it for his 6 years here so far with some pretty good results. i also don't buy into the fact that certain guys can only be good in a certain type of defense. they are football players first and most guys can learn any type of defense or offense if they have the athletic ability and smarts.

I like your thinking Cajunyankee, well said. I am curious though why a SIX TIME WORLD CHAMP can't bring in the best assistants/position coaches money can buy. When do you think Coach T will finally put a stamp on this team?I am beginning to wonder if C. Lake is not the future HC.
I think the Rooney's may really have their man right here in front of them. C LAKE.I too
wonder who was responsible for bringing Lake back to the Steelers, I am guessing it wasn't
    Coach T.LOL

A little bit of trivia on this. When Tony Dungy took over as defensive backfield coach, in 1982, he was coaching, amongst others....Mel Blount and Donnie Shell. I'm sure it was a little difficult for both Blount and Shell to be getting "coached" by a guy who, just a few years earlier, was a backup on their defense. But the relationship worked out just fine. Thee guys are pros.

Doesn't like, every starting quarterback in the NFL get pointers from his backup, all game long?

I've never been a Dungy fan because I hate the Colts so bad but Mel Blount did say that Tony Dungy was one of the smartest football players he was ever around. I think one of the things it takes to make someone great is that they can humble themselves enough to learn from anybody. You see, that's how stupid I am. If Tony Dungy said "hey I've got some good advice for you" I would say "Who cares? You coached the Colts." LOL. That's the difference between me and Mel Blount...among other things...

Butler was offered interviews by other teams for the DC position but the steelers wouldn't grant permission to them to interview him: The Cards wanted to interview Butler for their DC job, he was Whisenhunt's first choice but the steelers wouldn't grant the interview so the whiz had to settle for Ray Horton instead: Lebeau's brother has indicated that Dick will retire after this season, I think that is a strong possibility as well....

Wouldn't it make more sense for Lebeau to go out on a winning note??

He was granted permission at least twice, with Miami and Indy.

Wouldn't it make more sense to win as many as you can? As a fan, if we are winning Super Bowls, I hope we keep as many important pieces as possible.

You think Tomlin should be fired or you just would like to see him gone?

I would like to see him gone. In know way will the Rooney's fire him.Curious debate going on here in the Steel City,93.7 the fan have asked the fine people of WPA that considering all the professional coaches in town, under the circumstances, who has been the best head coach, Guess what Mike Tomlin wasn't the head coach that local people say was the best coach. Clint Hurdle was named the best, considering he has possibly the worst ownership in all professional sports signing his check, team that has not finished above 500 for 20 years. Mike Tomlin does not have much clout with the local people here.We can take him or LEAVE him. Please reread Cajunyankee thread this all you need to know about Mike.

    From Cajun:

Tomlin came in and kept the entire defensive staff. He kept the offensive staff as well but had to rebuild ir refurbish it after the departure of OC and OL coach. He promoted Arians from WR coach to OC, it failed and the "higher ups" brought in" a new OC WTH HC experience.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How did Ariens fail? Correct me if i'm wrong here but wasn't he calling the plays in another trophy winning season? Just wondering what the failed rational is. And how do you know that the brass upstairs brought Haley in?

Mike Tomlin is NOT going anywhere. If you like a revolving door of head coaches and unstable ownership, guess the Steelers are just not the team for you.

Guess the former coach Cowher was perfect right? Or the legend Chuck Noll. Stability is the Steeler way at the helm. Ya ain't gonna win every year.

I will say it again, Ben doesn't get injured, they get to the playoffs.

This was a thread about Woodson right? Was a great player who could not figure out the double pump. Let's not forget he jumped to the enemy, played a position that the Steelers wanted to explore with him. Nice that he's in camp to help out.

we now have a former HC as a DC and now as OC and have surrounded MT with more seasoned coaches. this will help MT a whole bunch, I believe.

I agree that Tomlin isn't going anywhere, but as for Arians... he was fired, and for a reason. Yes he was the OC for a Super Bowl win, but what does that mean? You were asking about the rationale for failure. Is being a member of a team that won a Super Bowl the rationale for success? Did Darnell Stapleton have success here? BA did have his strengths, but he was always a terrible playcaller, especially when it mattered most, and we won many games despite him. Around the league he was considered successful by a lot of people who just looked at our record and Ben's passing numbers. Hell, for all I know he was a great position coach, and maybe he'll be a great head coach. But his job here was calling plays, and he sucked, so he got fired.

He had his shortcomings, situational play calling his most glaring weakness but to call him a failure is a bit of a stretch IMO. The Rooneys wanted to go in a different direction because they weren't pleased with BA's philosophies.

(God help us, another BA debate )

Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. I don't think I'd call him a failure. I just don't know how you can call him a success either. And if you're looking for reasons to call him a failure, the fact that he wasn't very good at his job and was asked to please leave is a good place to start.

As for the Super Bowl, the best offense we had in that game came from our legendary defense (spotted us 14 points, oh, and 7 more points in the game that got us there), and from Ben's improvisation.

BA made some good plays, but couldn't use them. He was okay, but incapable of improving, and playcalling is a pretty substantial weakness for an OC to have. Like a QB whose Achilles' heel is that he's really bad at throwing. We should have dropped him much sooner. I won't lump him into the Darnell Stapleton category of Passenger, but I wouldn't go above Tyrone Carter.
