That`s my point, in a nutshell...(and I know you get it, because you think ALL stereotypes are funny)...
Yinz can call me "Cracker", "Honkey", "paleface", "whitey", whatever you want...
    It`s JUST A NAME!!!
I have thick skin... you can call me whatever you want... Redneck... CountryBumppkin, whatever...
    Again...
    It`s just a word...
Now, if you were to physically threaten me, or mine, ...
    That`s another story...
That`s what my ancestors did to the "redskins", and I don`t blame them at all for fighting back.
    Wouldn`t we?!?
Can ya see the difference between words, and actions?!?
I will let some words slide now, that I wouldn`t have, when I was younger, out at a bar,...
But, I will STILL not let someone take a swing at me or mine, when we are out and about.
    See the difference?
    Words, versus, actual physical threats?
Again... Just MY point of view.
I don`t expect anyone else to have the same one...
"`Cause this one is mine... there are many like it, but this one is mine..."...
    LOL... Just sayin.
I don`t expect The rest of the world to agree with me, but, I WILL go to my grave, knowing that I tried to explain why I felt the way I did about things that most people disagreed with me about!
It Is What It Is... Love that 21st century phrase!!!
    Peace...

I don't get it. How does me being less thorough benefit me? It's a complicated issue and I didn't want to be misunderstood by people. You can understand how people that say stuff to the effect of, "Native Americans don't even mind, it's just pandering politicians and Berkeley Hollywooders that like to be offended by stuff" might misinterpret my feelings. After all, before I said anything I'd been reduced to someone that likes to be offended by stuff and looks for a fight, rather than someone who thinks being cavalier about racial slurs for one particular race is offensive and shouldn't happen, especially for no good goddamn reason at all. Are you looking out for the amount of time I spend typing? That's sweet, but don't worry about it. So are you sure we're not just talking about your reading allergy?

At least you're doing a great job illustrating my point. You have feelings about the way I post, and you project those feelings onto every other board member here ("no one will read that, no one gives a rat's ass"). And now you're projecting them onto me ("you will be better served"). It's easy to see how you have no trouble speaking for the Native Americans of this country. I'm sure everyone who feels the way I do will pack up their beliefs and go home, now that Myron has spoken (not given any rational thoughts on the subject, just spoken).

Not everyone can let racial slurs slide right off their backs. I'm white, but from what I understand, it's harder for minorities to not feel great offense by that kind of stuff. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that racially speaking, they and/or their ancestors have either had an abusive past at the hands of the white race, or they at least have an uphill battle to climb to make it in this country. Whereas we are born at the top, so what to we care if someone makes fun of us? Make fun of us? For being white? That's like making fun of us for being handsome, right? White people are definitely no better than anyone else when it comes to getting over regular insults. But why would cracker or honky hurt my feelings? It means nothing to me, because race means nothing to me, because I'm white, and cops nod when I drive past. I think ****** and wetback are a little more loaded with meaning, and aimed at people who have a right to be sensitive about it, and have to deal with racism on a much more regular basis than we do (if ever. I've been judged negatively by my race maybe one circumstance in my life, and it was pretty freakin' small potatoes).

So I don't think it's a fair comparison to say, "I don't mind when someone insults me for my race, so why should they mind? Sticks and stones." That kind of implies they're just less mature or haven't reached our level of enlightenment on the subject, when really there's more to it than that.

Really "redneck" was originally a term of endearment. From what I've always heard about it it was started during the war between coal miners and the companies that were treating them really badly. So they started unionizing and the way you could tell if a guy was a company guy or a union guy is that you would wear a red bandana around your neck and people would say "hey that guy's one of us because he's a redneck". So really if someone uses it as a slur it just shows their own ignorance. But Snack, just out of curiosity, if the poll that I cited earlier in the thread that said 91% of indians are ok with it if it's actually accurate would you still think it should be changed?

Oh and also just for the record. You say that men wouldn't care to be made fun of for being too handsome but you MUST know that a woman NEVER wants to be made fun of for just being good looking. LOL!

That was the only insult I could come up with, since it's the only one I've ever gotten.

    Not really. :(

Wow, sometimes you`re hard to agree with,Snack..

What I`m about to say can probably fairly be percieved as racist, but, so what..
    here goes..
    I`ve been in jail.
    I WAS the minority...
And, I could still take the insults, until they escalated to punches being thrown...
SO, don`t think that I am speaking from a "high horse"...
And, believe it, or not, if you read back to the first page, I have a lot of sympathy for the "RED" Man, although I don`t want to say it in a condesending way...
    They don`t want my sympathy.
    They just want what`s fair...
Plenty of us "poor white trash", kinda people, have had to deal with prejudice from cops, teachers, and judges, so don`t you dare, think that I think I am "better than them"!!!!
I do know that I usually have an advantage, because of my skin color, but don`t for a minute, think that I was trying to say that it is easier for me to let insults "roll off my back", than it is for any other person of any color...
    I`m just trying to say...
    It`s a word...So Effin What?!?!
    Get over it!!!
Does that word define who you are as a person?
Or is it just an insult, spoken by an ignorant S.O.B., to try to provoke a response?!?!
Like I said, Call me what you want, but unless you are physically threatening me or mine...
I will let it slide, nowadays... Been there, done that, Ain`t worth it, over a WORD!!!
DON`T judge me, or think you know me, based on this board.
Like I was trying to say.. It`s just a freakin word... no more, no less...
If you`re gonna let it have that power over you, that`s your choice, but don`t think I take this topic lightly. or that I haven`t had to deal with consequenses of these words, and just say...
"Aww, no big deal... I`m white, doesn`t matter to me"... Trust me.. I know the power of racist words,... but still... they are just words...
At least we are talking about it here..
I think that`s a step in the right direction...
    But, what do I know?
    I`m just a hillbilly, LOL!:lolol:

I don't believe it is accurate, but if it was, it wouldn't change my mind. Not everything should be majority rules. That's why we have checks and balances in our (once functional) government. It's why there's a judicial system. Sometimes the majority is wrong. I think the newest poll has something like 9% of whites wanting to change the name, and 18% of minorities wanting to change it. I don't know the NA numbers. But overall, like 78% of people thought they should keep the name.

I think most people are doing what Goodell is doing, and separating the word from its meaning. They acknowledge that redskin is offensive, but say Redskin is harmless. I think if you used the term redskin in any kind of non-football context, the number of Native Americans taking offense would shoot through the roof. Especially if you said it in derogatory context. They're not stupid, and know the football team is just a football team. They get the same directv we get.

But the point remains, should a racial slur be celebrated like this? Why not have a team called the ******s? Plenty of African Americans use it in a positive way. So probably a lot of them wouldn't take offense, or think it was funny. And if we meant it in a positive way, how could they argue with that? In 1990, I bet a team called the ******s would have had a 95% approval rate. Would that be okay?

I think the only reason those ideas all sound crazy and Redskin sounds harmless is that we're used to Redskin. That's it. And "time-honored" things shouldn't get extra rights just because they're old. A lot of old things are terrible. Plus, I don't see what the big deal about changing it is. So what? The Oilers are the Titans, and that's... why? I don't know, but I don't remember a fight about it. So what if a poll comes out that says 5% of Native Americans are offended by it? That's not enough? So what if it's one percent? We're using a racial slur, and saying that they aren't offended enough for us to stop. This is unacceptable behavior, regardless of what percentage of Americans are on board with it because they don't like change with their football.

And our case in point, Gentlemen. (It's gone. Someone self edited. Thank you)

Want to know why we don't allow political conversations on this board? Because no one really has a debate. This holds true for virtually every discussion forum, message board, comments section, what have you on the internet. No minds are ever swayed. It becomes a lot of like minded guys slapping each others backs, or people of opposing minds shouting at each other, neither even daring to at least try to see the other side of things and eventually lowering themselves to name calling, belittling, or insults. It leads to animosity and the unwillingness to see another's view on any subject because "x" person isn't of the "correct" political or philosophical stripe.

Not that some jabs wouldn't be uncalled for, on either side, in certain circumstances. But it doesn't foster a healthy discussion.

I can't speak for TTF, but I allowed this to go on as long as it remained civil and on point. And because it was directly about the question of ethics surrounding a football team's name.

But clearly there is nothing left to say on the matter. Or rather, nobody is listening. Battle lines have been drawn and sides have been chosen. Coming to an agreement isn't going to happen. So everyone will have to agree to disagree (this round at least).

I'm locking this thread as it is going off the rails. TTF is free to unlock it if he sees fit, but I think the topic has reached the flogging a deceased equine stage.

I'm unlocking this thread Ray, but only momentarily so I can give you a public nod of approval. There won't be another round, though. Surely there's a political message board out there that has a Steelers sub forum.

I strongly caution folks to respect the board rules.
