Historically, late round QBs are forever backups or out of the league after a couple of years. Those unpolished diamonds do exist, but they are very rare. It would be awesome if Howard could be the guy for the future. He doesn't even have to be the next HOF QB either. He just needs to be consistent and good. Surround a good QB with some high quality weapons and he will do great (like a Brock Purdy).

That said, missing preseason undoubtedly hurt his chances. Practice and real games are very different. He is not going to see the field other than in a few special circumstances. Injury or a blowout. You never know about injuries as they can happen any time for the most stupid of reasons. But the blowout is probably not going to happen. When the Steelers do have a big lead, they give up a ton of garbage points to try and burn up the clock. It always ends up in a 1 score game. Can't be testing a new QB with that kind of a game plan.

I can think of a couple huge names who should've been taken higher in the draft. I'm in the use Howard camp even thought I know it ain't happening.

8 teams did not even think he was worth a 6th round pick

24 teams thought he was a 6th round pick or less

 

Yeah, let's hire Gruden who is barely over .500 in his coaching career .

I'm don't watch much CFB but when I watched McCarthy lead Michigan to a title, all I saw was a guy handing off most of the time, and any pass seemed like a trick play that the opposition wasn't prepared for. So I looked it up.

In 2023, McCarthy had 332 pass attempts and in 2024 Will Howard had 423. Both put up nice numbers on championship teams, and without digging deeper like when the QBs came out of blowouts, and going by limited memory etc, I never saw the 5 round difference between McCarthy and Howard.

 

When he is not getting beat up in Ireland , I though Skylar Thompson had made a case for him to be the #3 QB on the roster this year.

Before Skylar's injury, I thought he would make the 53 man roster, and Will Howard was going to be cut and then signed to the Practice Squad.

 

And yet has just as many SB wins as Tomlin..lol

I don't want Gruden...He was good with the raiders(1998-2001) and he deserve credit for 2002 even if Dungy deserve a major assist for their super bowl but since that time,0 playoff win in 8 full seasons,only 3 times in the playoffs

Gruden is also done for good with the NFL

 

Any rookie QB will fail behind this OL. Happy feet will take over and we will see Pickett 2.0.
