According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, Starks has signed a one year deal with the Chargers.

Would rather have had him the Whimper but then again Whimper is for depth and Starks wants to start. Maybe this will mean Embernat will make the team :herewego:

Would rather see some of the UDFA's get a chance, there are some good choices there, enough with the water wings, just throw them in the pool.

I wonder if Ben will still wear his jersey at camp as a way to protest? LOL.

With our injury history all over the OL, I really wanted him back. He's the ideal swing tackle. Now we don't have one, and we've got zero proven depth all across the OL. Whimper sure doesn't count. I know some are high on Beachum, but he will have to take a huge step forward in my mind to warrant seeing the field, even as a sub. And only on the right side. So who ever winds up RT will have to shift over if the LT goes down. Not saying Beachum can't do it, just that he better.

And yeah, I really hope that UDFA guy Embernate pans out.

Lets see..... the Chokers signed Max and Dwight Freeney in the last couple of days. Shouldn't the aim be to get younger as a team? Methinks this might be a ploy to put butts in the seats like they did with Unitas in the 70s.

I have always liked Max. And I would have loved to have him back. However with him wanting to be a starter and the Steelers going with a youth movement with their recent high draft picks...the writing was on the wall. This just wasnt all on the Steelers either. Max wanted to start and barring a huge setback by either of the OT's...the only time he'd start is if there was an injury...and I dont blame Max for wanting to start...he probably has a couple decent years left in him so why not. Max has "saved" the team at times when he was here and had some odd treatment his final years here...signed an extension then got cut only to be brought back part way through the season then eventually re-signed to a 1 year deal...played all 16 games/etc/etc and then was told we want to start our young high draft picks...we only want you as a backup at this point. So he went elsewhere where he can start/etc. I wish Max nothing but the best, he's always been a class act!

Agree. Just hope for Ben's sake Gilbert can hold down the left side. I was a big Max supported and thought we could resigned him. But he got his starting job and wins him the best

Best of luck Max. I always felt he was a bit under-appreciated.

:this!: gpguy sum's it up. Can't have the luxury of signing a would be starter elsewhere to be a backup with no cap space.

I know Max is gone and I hope he enjoys his time with the Chargers. I found this on Bouchette blog and thought it sum up Max Starks time as a Steeler:

"He started for two Super Bowl Champs, the first at right tackle the second at left tackle. The coaching staff never did take a liking to him yet the front office kept resigning him, franchising him, transitioning him, whatever they could do to keep him. He never makde the last two media guides because he was not on the team when the thing were sent to the printer in the summer.
Last year, he was a free agent coming off an ACL tear that occurred in their playoff loss to Denver. They signed him July 17, he reported to training camp and played every snap of ver game for them in 2012 at left tackle.
They did not sign him in 2011 until after the fourth game of the season because he was limited to seven games in 2010 by a neck injury. They signed him Oct 5 and went in to start that week and the remaining 12 game of the season.
He played nine seasons with the Steelers moved into their starting lineup in his second season in 2005 and started 96 regular season game and eight in the post season.
    And he is only 31."

call me pessimistic , but i seriously doubt gilbert can survive on the left side , if he does it will will be a miracle , maybe they signed wimper to play as te next to him , maybe in two they can pass protect

How many pro bowls did starks ever make? How about zero, I never saw him as an elite tackle, very average at best in my opinion, and the bolts obviously wasn't ready to figure him into their long term plans, or they would have signed him to a longer deal, he made a lot of money here, way more than I think he ever earned....

I just really don't know why the organization went from giving him a big payday to cutting him on a regular basis. He saved this teams arse numerous times.

He handled premiere pass rushers pretty darn well. His wan't pro bowl level, but it was VERY solid. In recent years he has stunk in the run game, but at one time he was decent, especially as a RT. I could never put a loss on him for having a complete horrible day like Jonathon Scott.

I really don't have faith in Gilbert as a LT. He is going to have to prove me wrong. Adams seems way more athletic. Adams is built like traditional LT's.

I agree and disagree with you here... I saw starks completely erase demarcus ware for an entire game, so the potential is and has always been there.... I also remember aldon smith treating him like he was a ghost........ therein lies the problem with starks... you never know what you're getting on the field due to his inconsistencies...... I've always liked him as a person. he was a high character guy and great for the locker room, and always accepted whatever role he was placed into without turning into a little diva (insert whatever name you wish here, but a certain wr immediately comes to mind)....... but as a player, he was just too inconsistent. last season, he was 1 of only 2 o-linemen to make it through the whole season, and only gave up 6 sacks I think... look a little closer though, and you'll also find that he gave up the most pressures.. the only reason they weren't sacks was due to the quick pass offense that was installed, and the fact that our qb is ben.......I wish him well, but it was time to move on.

at the same time, I have to agree that I have no faith in gilbert.... I am one of his biggest detractors on this board, but I also hold out hope that the work he put in with the other linemen will pay off...... adams, will be the eventual starter on the left side, but still needs some coaching up on his technique...... I would love to see adams on the left once the light comes on, with foster at rt, with the hope that one of the young guys steps up at lg, but that's just way too much transition.

I guess the best thing to do now is see if the off-season work paid off any... if it did, then i'll be the first one in line for the crow buffet
