I know it's not really related to the steelers (maybe this is since it was one of the big reasons why Watt didn't win the DPOY in 2023), but it's very interesting from Spagnuolo!

I will always defer to JJ on this topic. We had a similar discussion on the board like a decade ago and it always comes back around. At the time it was some fans being critical of Lebeau's 3-4 fire-zone blitz scheme and how it's couldn't be that complex and confusing to opposing offenses because backup QB's could have career games against it. Talk of how dumb the players were because the fan could see they blew their assignment based on the fan's assessment and that if backups could have success it had to suck as a scheme. The problem being we have no idea what the play calling was and the various responsibilities a player has to what the are seeing. We can go well the DE is meant to hold the line and eat up blocks. However there is more to that as well. Is it a run play, is it a pass, RPO, does the TE chip, do you get a free release because its a screen. Are they turning you left because its an inside run, are the trying to turn you right for an off tackle run. The only ones who know for sure are the players and the coaches.

Lebeau's scheme was always predicated on everyone doing their job and allowing those 4 LB's to make plays. Once Butler and Austin tinkered with it to allow the 3 DL men to activate and rush the passer the once vaunted run defense died and was replaced with guys looking for big splash plays.

Anyway Spags and JJ are right PFF grading players in games is subjective.

They are right and I’ve said the same thing JJ says there. There are some positives with PFF but not the grades, I always take them with a grain of salt.

I put zero stock in PFF and just not when it gives a bad grade to a Steeler. If they rated Broderick Jones the #1 Left Tackle in the NFL, I would call BS on it even though it made a Steeler look good. PFF currently has Rodgers rated the #38 ranked QB in the league. That is completely asinine, I don't how they aren't embarrassed to list Rodgers as not only the worst starter in the league but that he is even worse than 5 backups. They have no credibility at all.

PFF is ass. Its just made up stats by geeks who want to be a part of the game.

PFF is right more than they are wrong on player grades. They have worked their way into being the premier 3rd party rating system.

I remember a few years ago when PFF graded Trubisky higher than several quality NFL starters. The grades are subjective and provide very little value IMO. I do like some of their other data though, for example when looking at college DBs at draft time I’ll check out PFF’s stats on snap count in different alignments and passer rating when targeted (which is at least partially objective).

edit- Looking back, in 2022 PFF graded Trubisky as the 16th best QB (15th best passing grade) among NFL QBs. Yeah….

I still want to know why a pass rush win carries more weight than an actual quarterback pressure

Not disagreeing at all, but do we know how the PFF grades are calculated? Maybe there is some type of explanation that makes sense (probably not, but I like data).

I think this is the problem. We don’t know how they are calculated and they aren’t calculating based on how a play unfolded.

Imagine getting tested and there are 100 questions and you get 99 correct.

Yet you are rated lower than someone who only got 60 questions correct because they had better handwriting or wore a cute shirt.

That’s basically what PFF is doing when a QB throws 3 TD’s and 300 yards yet grades lower than a QB who threw 1 TD and 150 yards.

Can’t stand Cowherd but he is correct.

Russ and Flacco have been benched but they are rated better than Rodgers?

Geno had been trash this year too.

PFF is only good for arguing with other fans.

Spot on to how I feel when I see someone post a grade. And it's why we see we get a great grade and the player suck. And when I see that happening a lot, I start questioning if the coaches know how to use that player.

Also players get overvalued. Like no way Cam should be seen as elite with his 4 games this year. He's made a lot of errors, lack play time, etc. With just a few amazing plays. One amazing play should not wash away the horrible performance of the rest of the game.

2024 Cam would steam roll 2025 Cam 93.54% of the time

Every play is graded on a -1 to +1 scale. They will give 0.5 pts in some cases. But the real problem is there is high turnover in the staff and the year to year consistency is not very good. I mean, what is there method of calibration? What standard is used?

That is what happens when you have human personages trying to assign a single number to each player/play.

Same reason people can make even simple equations such as 2+2 so complex.

"Its more than that. Trust me bro."
