We either lock Herbig up now, or we will definitely lose him to free agency.

They don't do contract extensions during the season maybe in the offseason something will get done.

So we're banking all this on one game? Just asking

Honestly having all 3 healthy I think benefits the Steelers. Use all 3 in a rotation and mix in Sawyer. With the pass happy teams we have from week 8 on, we will need a constant fresh pass rush.

No, we're banking this on the last two and a half games since Highsmith has been injured.

Nah, I don’t think trading him is the right move. Still a good player and I don’t want to be one injury away from basically starting a rookie and picking up a PS guy to rotate in…. But I would be intrigued to see Herbig get more time. Maybe even start. It’s nice to have 3 quality rushers. Herbig has been improving drastically (and is getting better vs the run too). I’d be more in favor of signing Herbig at the end of the year and potentially shopping Highsmith in the offseason.

He looked good in the run game this week… maybe he’s improving there? If he could be an average run defender, he could be quite the player.

This is the answer. Total headache for opposing offences when you have genuinely disruptive pass rushers rotating in and out. Eagles have been doing this for years

That said, there is probably a decision to be made longer term as they can’t pay everyone

He's been a bit more that good! Herbig speed rush and stuning ability / timing have transformed out defense. This man can really accelerate. He should stay in his role.

Oh it has been more than one game, go back thru his career to this point. He makes PLAYS when
he gets opportunity. Note, Herbig also has injury problems.

This is a great problem for the Steelers to have. I felt in the past two years, the Steelers have had the best edge linebacker duo with Watt and Highsmith. Now with Herbig stepping up big time in Highsmith's absence, it shows the quality of talent that the Steelers have with their outside linebackers.

    Re; the OP question.

    Highsmith is more talented.
The problem with Highsmith is he is always dinged and doesn't seem to tap into that talent.
    Herbig passes Highsmith in effort.

The question of trade comes up.
I would think, unless a good WR is available, then I would not trade him.
That equates to a No on a trade, because there isn't one available for trade.

When one loses an argument and has nothing more of value to add this is usually a common retort. You can crawl back to the basement now and momma will let you know when the vittles are done.

He was lined up on him, but much of the pressure he created came on stunts that had him looping to the inside.

highsmith's contract won't help us until 2027. up to this point it cost more to let him go than keep him. i like herbig but he gets dinged up as much as highsmith.

I recall at least two key plays where Herbig arced around Darrisaw to impact the outcome, including the grounding penalty near the end. He’s hard to handle when he can pin his ears back and focus on the pass rush.

As an aside, I also recall him “tackling the catch” nicely at least twice in coverage.

The one on the intentional grounding call was against Darrisaw. I just remember others earlier that came when he looped inside.

Edit: Upon seeing some of the highlights, I think I remembered this incorrectly. Herbig also beat Darrisaw for a sack.

yes, Highsmith, when healthy, is the the #1 guy, but why not 50 / 50 platoon - keep these guys HUNGRY and FRESH?

HS is still better vs. the run

    Pretty clear to me…

Highsmith on run downs and Herbig on passing. If Herbig continues his strong play you trade Highsmith at the draft.

I can see that......Herbig is getting better each week, no argument there, BUT in our D, we need TOP OLB's - as we see right now, when 1 goes down, it is NICE to have the backup. And Herbig is on his Rook deal, so VERY nice....
