I think it's funny how people can look at the same thing and come away with 2 different evaluations. 2 guys here whos opinions I value a lot on this stuff, Steel_Elvis and SteelCity_NB view this kid differently. Obviously I am with NB on this one, I think we got a great RB. I think one of the reasons Bell was picked over the others is that Tomlin and Haley both like his ability to catch, which they said is better then any of the other guys, that's going to fit well into Haleys system.

i'm curious to see curtis mcneal from USC in preseason. 6.5 yds. per carry in college. 13 yards per reception. 145 carries for over 1,000 yds. rushing as a jr. at 6.9 per carry. then had over 6 ypc. as a sr.. anybody know much about him? new 3rd down back?

bell is the real deal. he won't play as much unless he cleans up his pass protection though. the steelers have held back alot of running backs for this same thing. they also think highly of the ones that can pass protect, ala barron batch. that was the first thing that stuck out to the coaches his first year. he's still here.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that I think the kid stinks. I'm saying that he's not special, and in my opinion you can get RBs who are good, but not special, late in the draft and as UDFAs. You don't need to spend high picks to get them. It's harder to find players at several other positions that we had (and still have) needs at. I would like for someone to point me to a complete game film that shows him as being special. I don't care about highlights. You can find great highlights for just about any draftable RB. Show me a game where I'm going to say - wow, he's special. Disciplined drafting is about getting good value for every pick, and in my opinion any RB who's not a special talent is a 4th rounder or later because you can find so many of them.

I was just reading this article about our running game and it has some things in it that Colbert and company saw in Bell as to why they like him that you were wondering about:

"If it was a 1-yard run, if he didn't have any room, he always seemed to fall forward for 4," Colbert said. "You look at his career average, it's right at 5.0. He's a big guy. He can go from being very patient to knowing when to hit a crease. He knows when to insert on those zone run schemes. And he can. He's a big kid that can block and he's got nice, soft hands."
Soft enough that Todd Haley said Bell can actually stay on the field on passing downs. The Steelers offensive coordinator called him a "three-down back, which is a big thing for us."

Haley said running backs coach Kirby Wilson looked at tape of some of Michigan State's roughest games -- "The games where the back isn't necessarily getting those big holes, so you can see what he's really capable of doing on his own.
"Because, as we know, in the NFL the holes are a lot smaller," Haley explained. "This is a big guy that can play like a big back, and yet also can get outside some and catch the ball."

"You look at a big, young back that can play in all three phases, but he's especially patient in the run game," Colbert said. "And like I said, he knows when to put his foot in the ground and cut up field and when he makes contact, he has a ton of yards after contact. It just seemed that every time he ran the ball, whether it was for a 1-yard gain before he fell into contact, he always ended up getting contact, so it's second-and-5."

To elaborate on what Kirby was doing because I read it in a different article then the one I am posting a link too but he studied tapes of all the prospects but looked for games where there was no where to run, and Bell thrives at it, I think that's special right there. He also ran for 137.9 yards per game last season and that's not behind a pro style line like Alabama.

Plus he lead all of college football in yards after contact. That's what we need.

Like Elvis said, he might be good but does he posses the skills to become special/elite? I'm not sure. This league is about speed/suddeness. I've never seen that one play when I watch him when he seems to be "shot out of a gun". The elite backs in the league have this, and if you're drafted in the 2nd round you should at least have the ability to become and elite back. The linebackers of today, hell even some of the lineman will run you down if you're not seriously moving.

Call me crazy, but if I squint at just the right angle, Bell reminds me a little bit of Chuck Muncie-- way formerly of the NO Saints and Air Coryell San Diego Chargers. At least on runs where he bounces it to the outside. Chuck was just a tiny bit taller.

He also does this certain step move that always reminds me of Earl Campbell. It took me a little while to realize who that reminded me of.

So...you're saying that a guy that gained over 1,000 YARDS LAST YEAR AFTER CONTACT is nothing special??? That led all of college football BY FAR according to Alex Marvez. Bell didn't have the road graders on the OL in front of him like Eddie Lacy and even Montee Ball to a certain degree but he averaged 5.0YPC throughout the course of his career. His yards after contact is phenomenal and I think pretty special myself.

I'll have to dig up some old VHS's to look for that. All I can remember is Earl draggin' and bouncing off half the defense! Oh, and his Skoal chewing tobacco commercial.

Sounds like we should induct Mr. Bell into the Hall of Fame before his career even begins! ;)

he's also down from his college playing weight. his quickness numbers were as good as anybody in the draft. 1,700 yards in a season is pretty elite. 2,000 all -purpose yards is pretty elite too.

jerome didn't wow people with his quickness either and was a pretty good back. i liken bell more to the kid from houston(foster) as a runner. that's worked out pretty well for them. throw mcneal and LSH into the mix and we could have some very decent speed and power in the backfield.

GROSS!!! GROSS!!! GROSS!!! JUST WRONG ON SOOOO MANY LEVELS!!! Just so everyone knows I HAAAAATE feet!!! They are the sickest and most disgusting thing on this planet to me. I can not stand to see people's feet. I can not stand to even SAY the word feet. My wife is never allowed to touch me with her feet. I aggravate people a lot and they always say "if you don't stop I'm gonna put my feet on you"! I just hate them and I always have and I always will. You think that's weird? Well my pastor hates rubber bands! How's that for a phobia?

Sadly, he'll never be a foot model. He has a pair of 13s, EEE wide, flat feet with one yellow big toenail and the other big toenail is black and blue, that will probably have to be removed after mini-camp.

Well, to be fair Bus had great feet and you had to try and tackle him low because he was a tank.
